Eurowings/NFD founded 30 years ago at Nuremberg Airport

It was in the mid-1970s when the Nuremberg textile entrepreneur Hans Rudolf Wöhrl founded the Nuremberg Air Service (NFD), laying the foundation for what would later become Eurowings. The first ATR 72 propeller planes with their orange and red stripes dominated the apron of Nuremberg Airport and brought about a boom in regional travel. The merger of the NFD with the Dortmunder Reise- und Industrieflug (RFG) on February 1, 1993 resulted in the formation of today's Eurowings. Eurowings began with 32 destinations in 11 countries, but focused on domestic German connections. The name "Eurowings" was won by an employee in an ideas competition, and the logo was designed by students from the Nuremberg Academy of Art. The Lufthansa Group became involved in 2001. Today, the Lufthansa subsidiary's fleet comprises more than 100 aircraft and flies to over 140 destinations in over 50 countries. From Nuremberg, one of the destinations we head for is Mallorca – the favorite island of the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

Skyguide tests power supply systems

The Swiss air traffic control company Skyguide recently carried out two tests to check the robustness and reliability of the power supply systems in the Geneva district control center. The uninterruptible power supply (UPS) ensures that all safety-relevant systems continue to function through batteries and emergency generators in the event of a failure of the external power grid. Skyguide maintains two UPS systems, which were tested separately on two nights in January. Both tests went without problems, as the Swiss online portal Aerotelegraph reports. The air traffic control company had taken measures in advance to ensure that the tests did not affect ongoing flight operations. Around 60 Skyguide employees were on site during the test night.

Boeing will also assemble B737-Max in Everett in the future

The cessation of production of the Boeing 747 means that the US aircraft manufacturer is using the capacities at the Everett site for other purposes. A fourth production line for the B737 Max series will be set up at this plant. In the meantime, employees have been informed by internal memo that 737 Max production is being expanded in Everett. Management currently assumes that the additional final assembly line will be put into operation in the second half of 2024. This should significantly increase the monthly production rate. At the moment, this type of machine, which is the best-selling in the portfolio, is finally assembled exclusively at the Renton site. The plant has three production lines. The Boeing 747 was manufactured in Everett until recently, but production has now ended. The last machine will be handed over to Atlas Air on January 31, 2023. Other types of machines that are assembled in Everett include the B767 and the B777.

Eurowings celebrates its 30s

The airline Eurowings will celebrate its 1th anniversary on February 2023, 30. The carrier was founded on February 1, 1993 from the merger of NFD, founded by Hans Rudolf Wöhrl, and RFG, founded by Reinhard Santer. The name "Eurowings" came from an employee who won an ideas competition and received 500 German marks at the time. The logo introduced at the time of the company's founding was designed by students from the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts. The airline started out with almost 1.000 employees and ATR 72 turboprop aircraft. Although 32 destinations in eleven countries were already served in the year of its founding, the focus was on domestic German connections. For a long time, Eurowings had to fly under the flight numbers of NFD and RFG, because the code required by Eurowings had been assigned by the international aviation organization IATA to a subsidiary of "Janlyn PTE" based in Papua New Guinea. Through intensive negotiations, the company finally managed to obtain the EW code for its own flights. The first flight, number EW733, flew from Nuremberg to Paris in 1994. In the 90s, Eurowings took over feeder flights for the Dutch airline KLM and – initially as a competitor to Lufthansa – was temporarily flying to Amsterdam with 13 aircraft. The year 2001 marked a milestone in Eurowings' history. With the involvement of the Lufthansa Group, the company's strategy changed: the turboprop aircraft were replaced by CRJ jets and Eurowings operated flights as part of Lufthansa Regional. With Germanwings, Eurowings launched a low-cost airline pioneer for Germany just one year later, operating in tandem with
