Air India places bulk orders with Airbus and Boeing

The industry has been talking about it for a few weeks, but now the time has come: the Indian company Tata Sons has ordered 250 new aircraft from Airbus and 220 from Boeing for the Air India Group. For many years, the former state-owned airline was idling along. Since privatization, this has changed dramatically, as numerous leasing contracts have already been concluded under the leadership of Tata Sons. The fleet has now grown to around 100 commercial aircraft. Air India has now announced that it has ordered 34 Airbus A350-1000s, six A350-900s, 140 A320neos and 70 A321neos. Competitor Boeing has ordered 20 B787-9s, ten B777-9s and 190 Boeing 737-Maxes in the -8 and -10 variants. Phuket warns of poisonous jellyfish

After more than 30 tourists in Phuket were stung by poisonous jellyfish in a short period of time, local authorities have issued official warnings for affected beaches. Travelers should pay attention to signage and follow instructions to avoid contact with poisonous jellyfish. Although jellyfish are part of the natural fauna in Thailand and do not normally pose a danger, increased reports of jellyfish stings have prompted the warning. Fire jellyfish are the most common type and usually cause only mild symptoms such as a burning pain and hives. Lifeguards on beaches are well trained to help in the event of a sting. Other types of jellyfish such as the Portuguese man o' war and the box jellyfish are less common but more painful. Overall, however, the risk of a jellyfish sting in Thailand is low.

JetBlue takeover of Spirit in jeopardy

The US government is interfering between JetBlue and Spirit Airlines. The US Department of Justice plans to file an antitrust lawsuit against JetBlue Airways to prevent its takeover of Spirit Airlines. In the summer of 2022, the airline won the bidding war with Frontier Airlines. Now the deal may not go ahead after all. Although Spirit's board had expressed doubts about the feasibility of the deal for a long time, JetBlue was finally able to complete the purchase for 3,8 billion US dollars. The US Department of Justice wants to break up the "Northeast Alliance" - a pact between JetBlue Airways and American Airlines - to enable more airline competition in New York and Boston. This is reported by the German online portal Aero. As long as the matter is not resolved, a merger between JetBlue and Spirit has "little chance of antitrust approval", Spirit had warned its own shareholders in 2022 against merging with JetBlue.

December 2022: Low passenger volume in the winter timetable period

In December 2022, the number of travelers fell by almost 500.000 compared to November. In total, German airports counted 12,02 million arriving and departing passengers. Compared to the pre-crisis level of 2019, the volume level was 70,6 percent of travelers. The recovery in German passenger volume, measured against the pre-crisis level of 2019, was well below the European average: across Europe, air traffic demand had already recovered to 87 percent in December. The number of commercial flight movements, with 114.616 take-offs and landings, was 5,3 percent higher than the previous year. Compared to 2019, almost three quarters of commercial flights were carried out. From January to December, more than 165,05 million passengers were counted at German airports. At +110,09 percent, the airports recorded intensive growth compared to the previous year - but are still 2019 percent short of the pre-crisis level in 34,1. In contrast, air freight demand in December fell by almost 14.000 tons compared to November. At 409.580 tons, around 17,3 percent less freight was handled compared to the strong previous year. Meanwhile, the logistics chains have adjusted to the airspace closures. "Significantly longer flight routes to the Asian markets resulting from a lack of overflight rights are placing a significant burden on air freight logistics. The uncertain overall economic situation is putting a strain on global supply chains," said the airport association ADV.

Tested: The new Condor Premium Economy in the A330neo from New York to Frankfurt

It is Monday, February 13, 2023, when in Terminal 7 of New York's JFK airport - bar tables, Condor roll-ups and balloons of different colors decorate the check-in area and the gate area of Gate 4. With a bright blue sky and an outside temperature of 11 degrees, Condor's gold and white striped Airbus A14-45neo landed for the first time at 330:900 p.m. local time. While in recent weeks a mixture of SmartLynx and Wamos Air A330s had been used on the Frankfurt - New York JFK route, Condor's "own" A12.02, the D-AIYA, landed the day before (330), albeit an A330-200 that was formerly in service with Etihad Airways and which we at Aviation.Direct had already tested in Business Class on a flight from Palma de Mallorca in April. Condor had obviously prepared professionally and left nothing to chance that day. In the renovated Terminal 7, where the codeshare flights of Condor's partner Alaska Airlines take off and land from JFK and where the "Alaska Airlines Lounge" is located, the check-in counters had already been decorated in the new corporate design and equipped with "Welcome A330neo" items. After the smooth check-in, there was a brief setback. Even though the use of the "Fast Lane" had been indicated on the boarding pass and on the homepage, the employee at the access control to security simply smiled "sorry, we don't have a fast lane", and so I went into the regular queue, which welcomed me with an expected waiting time of "less than 35 minutes". After this hurdle had also been overcome,

Schauinsland-Reisen advertises work at the holiday destination

The German tour operator Schauinsland offers its employees the opportunity to extend their annual leave as part of the "Workation" program. To do this, employees are supposed to work at the holiday destination. "If you book four weeks in Gran Canaria, for example, you can spend two weeks on holiday there and then work remotely for another two weeks," explains managing director Gerald Kassner, whose son Steffen Kassner came up with the idea for this program. "We are always looking for ways to make jobs in our company even more attractive. Offering this modern form of work is therefore a logical step," explains Steffen Kassner. "In the tough competition for skilled workers, we have recently been able to hold our own as an attractive employer. I would like to help ensure that this remains the case in the future." The tour operator also advertises numerous other benefits to new employees, such as regular salary increases and additional benefits. Only in November did the company announce that it would pay out the inflation compensation bonus of 3.000 euros made possible by the federal government in full to all team members in order to support employees in the current difficult times. Last year, the tour operator hired a total of almost 80 new employees and 10 apprentices. Due to the recent strong sales development, the travel provider wants to continue to grow this year. There are currently more than 20 positions advertised for the company's location in Duisburg and for Schauinsland travel agencies throughout Germany.
