Verdi strike: Stuttgart also has to be off the grid

After Hamburg, Frankfurt and Munich, Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport also announced that it would have to suspend flight operations on Friday, February 17, 2023 due to the strike announced by the Verdi union. 162 scheduled flight movements have been registered for Friday at Baden-Württemberg's largest airport. Around 20.000 passengers are affected by the upcoming cancellations. The airport requests: "Passengers and those picking up passengers are asked to contact the respective airline directly to find out about the status of their flight and not to come to the airport." Only security landings, humanitarian aid flights and military traffic can use Stuttgart-Echterdingen Airport on Friday. Hamburg is also now asking passengers not to come to the airport. Munich and Frankfurt will also suspend flight operations on Friday. Verdi is calling on three professional groups at seven German airports to go on strike.

Dredged data line: Lufthansa restarts flight operations

During construction work on a railway tunnel, a data line used by Lufthansa was "dug out". This resulted in numerous IT systems becoming unavailable. Many flights operated by Lufthansa and its subsidiaries have been cancelled. The Lufthansa Group is now beginning to restart its systems and flight operations. It is assumed that disruptions such as cancellations and delays will continue throughout the day. Flight operations are expected to be largely normal on Thursday, February 16, 2023. However, the Lufthansa Group has a completely different problem on its hands: many passengers, especially those transferring flights, are stranded and not all of them can be rebooked for flights on Thursday. On Friday, February 17, 2023, the Munich and Frankfurt am Main hubs cannot be used due to a warning strike called by the Verdi union. Both airports have already announced that they will have to go offline due to the industrial action. Thus, the consequences of the IT outage – combined with the impending Verdi strike – will continue to have a detrimental effect on passengers for several days.

Verdi strike: Frankfurt also has to go offline

Due to the strike called by the Verdi union at seven German airports on Friday, February 17, 2023, Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt am Main, will be closed to passenger flights. Verdi is calling on employees in three professional groups to stop work at the airports in Hamburg, Stuttgart, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Frankfurt and Munich on Friday. The Hanseatic and Bavarian airports have already announced that no flight operations can take place due to the industrial action. An IT glitch caused by the "dug-out" of a data line used by Lufthansa caused Lufthansa's flight operations to collapse on Wednesday. Air traffic control diverted planes destined for Frankfurt to other airports. The Verdi union is sticking to the strike plans despite the chaotic conditions that prevailed in Germany on Wednesday. Frankfurt am Main will therefore not be able to handle any passenger flights due to the strike and will only be available in emergency operations. "Industrial action aimed at shutting down seven airports for the whole day, thereby affecting domestic German air traffic on a large scale and a large number of international connections, goes far beyond the scope of a warning strike and is completely inappropriate. The fact that more than 295.000 air travelers have to suffer as a result of the conflict on Friday is unreasonable. Solutions must be found at the negotiating table and not at the expense of passengers," said Ralph Beisel, General Manager of the airport association ADV. "The airports are currently operating in an extremely tense economic environment. Every strike-related cancellation of traffic hits the aviation industry hard at a time when companies are just recovering from the high losses of the Corona period."

Verdi strike: All passenger flights in Munich canceled

Due to the strike call by the Verdi union, there will be no passenger flights at Germany's second largest airport, Munich, on Friday, February 17, 2023. The airport has applied to the responsible supervisory authority to be exempted from the obligation to operate on that day. This application was granted - so there will be no regular passenger flights next Friday between midnight and Saturday, 00:00 a.m. All special flights, such as relief flights, flights for medical, technical and other emergencies, and flights for the security conference, are not affected. The supervisory authority responsible for Munich Airport is the Bavarian State Ministry for Housing, Construction and Transport, which acts as the highest air supervisory authority. The management of Franz Josef Strauss Airport assumes that it will be severely affected by the strikes called by the Verdi union at a total of seven German commercial airports. Given that three professional groups necessary for safe flight operations have been called on to stop work, it is not possible to allow passenger flights to fly on February 01, 00. Due to the fact that the supervisory authority is suspending the obligation to operate on that day, all flights have been canceled. All passengers are strongly advised to check with their respective airline. Current information is available on the Munich Airport website at www.munich-airport.de. The airlines also provide information on rebooking options and, if possible, alternative transport options. Hamburg Airport also assumes that flights will not be possible on Friday and is asking passengers and those collecting them not to come to the airport at all. In Stuttgart, considerable restrictions are expected.

Verdi strike: Hamburg asks passengers not to come to the airport

In view of the strike announced by the Verdi union for February 17, 2023, Hamburg Airport assumes that regular flight operations will not be possible. The airport is asking passengers and those picking them up not to come to the airport at all. In Hamburg alone, around 32.000 arriving and departing passengers are affected by impending flight cancellations. People who have booked tickets to/from Hamburg for Friday, February 17, 2023 are asked not to come to the airport and to contact their airline for information about rebooking and/or alternative transport options. The Verdi union has called on employees at seven German commercial airports to stop work from 16 p.m. on Thursday, February 22, to 17 p.m. on Friday, February 2023, 22. At Hamburg Airport, the strike may affect the areas of air security control, passenger handling and maintenance, among others. Other airports in Germany are also affected by a Verdi strike.

Boeing increases deliveries and surpasses Airbus

At the start of the year, Boeing delivered almost twice as many commercial aircraft as its European rival Airbus. A total of 38 aircraft found their way to customers in the first month of the year, according to the German online portal Aero. The world's largest aircraft manufacturer, Airbus, had only delivered 20 aircraft to its customers. Boeing, meanwhile, received orders for 55 new aircraft, but also had to accept 39 cancellations. The US group has been struggling with expensive problems with several aircraft types for years. It had already lost the position of the world's largest aircraft manufacturer to Airbus in 2019. Despite a certain recovery, Boeing only delivered 480 aircraft last year, falling far behind the Airbus group, which delivered a net 661 jets despite bottlenecks in its supply chains and cut targets.

Verdi strike: Stuttgart also expects failures

17 regular flight movements have been registered from Stuttgart for Friday, February 2023, 162. It is completely unclear whether all of these can be carried out, because the Verdi union is also calling on employees in three professional groups at this airport to go on strike. In addition to ground handling services, employees involved in passenger security checks are also expected to take part in the strike. Passengers must therefore expect disruptions to operations and delays or cancellations of flights on Friday. Passengers who have booked a flight for Friday are advised to check the status of their flight and allow more time for the journey. The airport regrets the restrictions that the strike will bring for passengers. In the current collective bargaining round, the service union Verdi is demanding a 10,5 percent pay increase for federal and municipal employees, but at least 500 euros more per month for a term of twelve months. At a total of seven German airports, the union called on its members to go on strike on Friday, February 17, 2023.

Verdi strike: Dortmund expects flights to be canceled

Due to the strike announced for Friday, February 17, 2023 at seven German commercial airports, delays and cancellations are expected in Dortmund. The exact extent cannot yet be estimated. The Verdi union is calling for all-day work stoppages at this airport, among others. The background to this is the negotiations for public service employees at federal and municipal level. Dortmund Airport writes: "Due to the strike, there may be delays and cancellations in flight operations at Dortmund Airport. We ask for your understanding. Please contact your airline or tour operator to find out the current status of your booked flight."
