New problem: Boeing has to stop Dreamliner deliveries again

The US aircraft manufacturer has once again had to halt deliveries of the B787 "Dreamliner" long-haul aircraft. A new problem was recently discovered in the fuselage area. The manufacturer claims that this is an "analysis error" and that there is no immediate danger to the fleet in operation. Boeing has temporarily halted deliveries of its Dreamliner aircraft after it emerged that their fuselage components require additional analysis. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) must be fully satisfied with the problem before deliveries can resume. The authority also announced that it is working with Boeing to determine what measures may be necessary for recently delivered aircraft. Lufthansa could also be affected by this, as the carrier took delivery of its first Boeing 787-9s in recent months. "When reviewing the certification documents, Boeing discovered an analysis error by our supplier related to the front pressure bulkhead of the 787. We have notified the FAA and paused deliveries of the 787 while we complete the required analysis and documentation," the manufacturer said in a statement. Boeing says there are no immediate flight safety concerns for the fleet in operation and that the company is in contact with customers and will continue to follow the FAA's instructions. The aircraft manufacturer also said that near-term deliveries will be impacted, but expects "no change to our production and delivery forecasts for 2023."

At the Hamburg-Rahlstedt site, Lufthansa Technik plans to train 376 additional employees this year alone. Capacity is to be increased to 1.000 apprenticeships within the next five years.

In Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf: Verdi calls for airport strikes again

On Monday, February 27, 2023, significant restrictions on air traffic are to be expected at Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf airports. The background to this is that the Verdi union is once again calling for work stoppages at airports. "At Cologne/Bonn airport, the first groups of employees will begin striking on the night of February 26.2.2023, 27.2.2023 to February 27.2.2023, 28.2.2023. Düsseldorf will follow shortly thereafter. Due to shift work, the strikes will end on the night of February XNUMX, XNUMX to February XNUMX, XNUMX at both airports," said the employee representatives in a press release. The effects on flight operations cannot yet be estimated. However, it can be assumed that there will be significant restrictions. The previous wave of strikes, which took place at seven German airports, meant that Munich, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Hamburg and Dortmund, among others, had to completely suspend operations. Lufthansa canceled all flights from the Munich and Frankfurt hubs. Passengers who have booked tickets from/to Düsseldorf or Cologne/Bonn for Monday should regularly check with their airline about the current status of their booking. They should also clarify any rebooking and/or alternative transport options.

Security check: Frankfurt is also introducing appointment reservations

At the beginning of this week, Frankfurt am Main Airport introduced the reservation of appointments for security checks. The new service is free of charge and is intended to avoid long waiting times. For the time being, it is a trial operation. Last year, Berlin, Munich and Cologne/Bonn, among others, introduced the reservation of time slots for security checks. Now Germany's largest airport, Frankfurt am Main, is following suit. Those airports that offer such a service expect a simplified control of passenger flows and thus shorter waiting times for travelers.

China expects around 90 million tourists

The Chinese Tourism Academy expects that around 2023 million tourists will either visit China or travel abroad in the current year 90. As a result, high demand for airline tickets is expected. In recent weeks, the People's Republic of China has begun to abandon its once strict zero-Covid policy. Entry and quarantine regulations have also been massively relaxed, making it much easier for both residents and tourists to travel to this country. As a result, many airlines resumed flights to the world's second largest economy or increased the number of existing flights. British Airways, Virgin Atlantic, Swiss and KLM have all presented plans to resume flights to China or increase existing flights in their flight schedules. Reuters reports that the forecast 90 million incoming and outgoing tourists will double compared to last year and return to 31,5 percent of pre-pandemic levels. Domestic tourism is expected to bring in US$580,8 billion, up 95 percent year-on-year and reaching 71 percent of the 2019 level. Overall, the number of domestic tourists is expected to reach about 4,55 billion. "The tourism market is expected to enter a new channel of expected strengthening in the second quarter, and the summer vacation is expected to usher in a full recovery," the report from the China Tourism Academy said.

Uncleared folding tables: Thai Airways suspends flight attendants without pay

A few days ago, a video shared on TikTok showing folding tables that had not been cleared during the landing of a Thai Airways plane in Bangkok caused a stir. This now has serious repercussions for the cabin crew, as the airline has suspended the affected crew from duty without pay. A TikTok video posted on February 17, 2023 by one of the passengers with the username praewa_panicha shows the landing of the flight, with the food trays still on the fold-out tables on some passengers' seats. Cutlery and dishes clattered during landing, and finally a water bottle fell from one of the tables. The cabin crew had obviously neglected to clear the tables beforehand. This is urgently necessary for safety reasons, as otherwise injuries could occur in the event of irregular landings. Thai Airways issued a statement on its Facebook page on February 18, 2023, saying that the airline considers passenger safety to be its top priority and that the company is "currently conducting an urgent investigation to establish the facts." On February 22, 2023, The Straits Times reported that Thai Airways has suspended the cabin crew involved in the incident for one month without pay and that the airline is continuing its investigation.
