Lufthansa and Condor: Turbulence leads to injuries on board

The Lufthansa flight to Frankfurt experienced turbulence 90 minutes after takeoff from Austin. This is known as clear-air turbulence, which can occur without any visible cloud phenomena. Trained personnel were able to care for and treat the injured passengers. According to the FAA, seven passengers were taken to hospital. The decision was ultimately made to land early at Dulles International Airport. The Condor flight to Mauritius suffered a similar fate; turbulence was detected two hours before the scheduled landing. UK clears Korean/Asiana merger

On March 1, 2023, the countries of Great Britain and Northern Ireland will approve the alliance between Korean Air and Asiana Airlines. The airline Korean Air is now waiting for recognition from the EU, the USA and Japan. The CMA initially scheduled its assessment until March 23. This was justified by the fact that the market's opinion would still be implemented and action would be taken accordingly. However, the proposed solutions were generally accepted. The approval by the CMA shows that the proposed solutions were able to override objections under competition law. Flights between London Heathrow and Seoul Incheon will in future be managed through cooperation between the airlines Korean Air and Virgin Atlantic. Since January 2022, Korean Air has presented its solutions to 14 competition authorities. 11 countries approved the merger of the two airlines. Approval was given by the following 11 states: Approvals for the alliance from the EU, the USA and Japan are not yet forthcoming. Korean Air continues to negotiate with all relevant authorities to get closer to the goal of the merger.

Lufthansa orders Airbus A350-1000 and more B787-9

Germany's largest airline, Lufthansa, announced on Thursday that it had ordered a total of 22 new long-haul aircraft. These are ten Airbus A350-1000s, five A350-900s and seven Boeing 787-9s. In the medium term, the company plans to phase out older models, including Boeing 747-400s, Airbus A340-300s and A340-600s. The company wants to get rid of four-engine aircraft in particular, as these are considered to be particularly fuel-intensive and therefore expensive to operate. The Supervisory Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG has already given the green light for the order of the 22 long-haul aircraft. The order value according to list prices is around 7,5 billion US dollars and is expected to be in line with the group's medium-term financial planning. The Lufthansa Group is also in advanced negotiations for additional long-haul aircraft that may be available at short notice. "With the purchase of 22 additional A350s and Boeing 787s, we have secured a total of more than 50 latest-generation long-haul aircraft for the airlines of the Lufthansa Group since the beginning of the pandemic. The aircraft will be equipped with our new long-haul cabin - including the new generation of seats in all classes. The combination of our first-class employees on the ground and on board, state-of-the-art aircraft and our latest range of seats on board will once again position our airlines well ahead in the premium segment. In addition, the new aircraft will make a decisive contribution to achieving our CO₂ savings targets by 2030, because fuel-efficient aircraft of the latest design are by far the greatest lever for more climate protection in air transport," explains CEO Carsten Spohr. Including today's order, the Lufthansa Group will receive 108 long-haul aircraft such as the A350-1000, A350-900, Boeing 787-9 and Boeing 777-9 in the next few years.
