Slovenia: considerations of a new airline

Slovenia is reviewing the possibility of establishing a new airline to revive the Slovenian tourism sector following the economic losses caused by the bankruptcy of Adria Airways. The Ministry of Infrastructure will examine in the coming weeks whether this will actually be implemented before any airline can be established. Adria Airways, once known as Slovenia's largest airline, caused significant losses in the tourism sector when it went bankrupt in 2019. In this regard, the possibility of establishing another airline to revive Slovenian tourism and restore connections between Slovenia and the world in order to ensure the country's accessibility is now being considered. The decision to establish a new carrier is based on analyses by a group of experts installed by the government. This analysis will be used to make a final decision by the government in the future. "My opinion on this issue is not as important as what these studies will show. Our country has already had a bad experience with its national airline. Not only was it bought by a disastrous buyer, which led to its bankruptcy, but a few years earlier, Adria was making huge losses, year after year. We had to provide state aid, and of course all this has to be put on the table so that the government knows all the facts when it decides which way to go. But we can hear the voice of the economy, which of course says that Slovenia needs such a company again,” said the Slovenian Minister for

Dornier 228NXT is built in Oberpfaffenhofen

Series production of the Dornier 228 is to be resumed at Oberpfaffenhofen in Bavaria. General Atomics AeroTec Systems (formerly Ruag) is launching a modernized version as the Dornier 228NXT. The Do228 has been successfully used worldwide for several decades for maritime patrol (pollution control, search and rescue missions, border control, fisheries patrol), for research flights, surveillance and reconnaissance as well as for light transport missions (cargo, parachutists, passengers, medical missions). The aircraft from Oberpfaffenhofen is characterized by its ability to take off and land on short distances (STOL). It can also operate on poorly paved runways. In addition to manufacturing, General Atomics AeroTec Systems also offers upgrades, modernizations, maintenance and repairs for the Do228. The combination of a robust aircraft, Bavarian precision work and versatile applications makes the Do228 one of the most popular aircraft in its class. Harald Robl, CEO of the General Atomics Europe Group, said: "We are proud to launch the next generation of the Do228 and continue the aircraft's success story. The Dornier 228 NXT is an important step in the further development of the aviation industry and will help GA-ATS remain a leader in the aviation industry in the future."

Almost 20 years after the EU: USA introduce passenger rights

When it comes to the lack of customer service in the event of flight irregularities, some US carriers have gone so far that the US Department of Transportation has announced that a new regulation will be introduced that will require airlines to cover costs and pay compensation in such cases. In principle, the plan is comparable to the European Union's Air Passenger Rights Regulation, which has been in force since 2004. The airline lobby association is working hard to persuade Brussels to relax these regulations, even though many providers are not particularly strict about paying the costs of alternative transport and/or compensation. In the USA, the Department of Transportation wants to oblige airlines to pay compensation in the event of significant delays, cancellations or missed connecting flights, as well as to cover the costs of meals, rebookings and hotel accommodation. However, as in Europe, this will only apply if the airline is at fault. For example, events of force majeure such as severe storms that make flying impossible for safety reasons should be excluded.

Business Class Catering: Lufthansa abolishes “Tasting Heimat” again

After just one year, Lufthansa wants to revise the business class catering concept on short and medium-haul flights that was only introduced last year. "Tasting Heimat" is to be abolished again because it has not been as well received by passengers as hoped. Lufthansa is currently working on a new concept for the food and drinks served in the business class on short and medium-haul flights. "Tasting Heimat" is to be a thing of the past. It has not yet been decided whether this will subsequently also include group subsidiaries such as Austrian Airlines or not. The portal Frankfurtflyer reported, among other things, that the main reason for Lufthansa's discontinuation of "Tasting Heimat" is that it was not well received by business class passengers.

Republic Airways: Pilots must pay a $100.000 penalty for early termination

Bonuses for signing a contract are not uncommon when pilots are urgently needed. Now Republic Airways is turning the tables and is stipulating in new contracts that pilots agree to pay a penalty of 100.000 US dollars if they resign before the end of three years. Pilots who are already employed by the US regional airline are of course not affected by this. It is only about new hires and the fact that many regional carriers like Republic Airways use them as a kind of stepping stone to the cockpit of a larger airline. First officers in particular are often forced to change employers after just one year. The penalty, which is now included in the employment contracts, has been heavily criticized by union members. They believe that such a clause is illegal and will lead to Republic Airways having even greater problems finding new pilots. Another point that is viewed critically is that the carrier is committed to promoting first officers to captain after only one year and stipulates as a vague condition that one must “fly as much as possible”.
