Only three elderly people live on the Maltese island of Comino. In the summer months, however, the small island is literally overrun by tourists, mostly brought to the Blue Lagoon on excursion boats. There used to be a hotel, but it is showing its age and was therefore closed even before the corona pandemic. The hotel group Six Senses wants to transform the former Comino hotel and its attached bungalows into a luxury complex. The project is extremely controversial in Malta, as environmentalists fear that it will go far beyond what already exists. By law, you can only live permanently on Comino if you already had a residence before the law came into force. Administratively, the island is assigned to the neighboring island of Gozo. The planned new hotel, which is due to open in 2027, is to offer, among other things, 71 suites and 19 residences. There is massive anger about the latter in particular, as critics fear that this could lead to residences for the rich being created through the back door. The very last word has not yet been spoken, so it remains to be seen whether the Six Senses Comino will actually open in 2027.
