United Airlines cancels Honolulu-Tokyo Narita

The US airline United Airlines has decided to remove the Honolulu-Tokyo Narita route from its flight schedule. The resumption of service has therefore failed for the time being - for the US giant. The US carrier United Airlines recently decided to resume the route between Honolulu and Tokyo Narita and to operate it with aircraft from its own fleet. However, this plan is now a thing of the past: the airline has now removed the connection from its flight schedule. One possible reason could be the existing competition, which could cause the airline concern. The route is already operated by four airlines, as the portal Simple Flying confirms.

Vienna Airport and Wiener Städtische start sales cooperation

The insurance company Wiener Städtische, in cooperation with Flughafen Wien AG, is now offering the option of purchasing travel insurance when booking parking spaces or using the airport's free WiFi. This is currently a pilot project. "This simple access offers travelers maximum flexibility and convenience, as they can insure their trip even a few minutes before departure," says Wiener Städtische Deputy General Director Sonja Steßl, adding: "With this cooperation, we are underlining our service excellence and enabling passengers to have tailor-made insurance cover that suits their needs and travel behavior." "Good financial protection against unpleasant surprises - that's what travel insurance offers, and it can now be taken out easily and unbureaucratically at the airport. The desire for an untroubled vacation experience has increased significantly again. Vienna Airport expects around seven million passengers for the peak travel season in July and August 2023, which is just below the level of the record year 2019 and underlines that the need to travel has increased significantly again. This new service offering in cooperation with Wiener Städtische Versicherung allows all passengers to start their vacation with greater security," says Günther Ofner, CEO of Flughafen Wien AG.

Summer 2023: Nuremberg expects up to 16.000 passengers per day

A few days ago, the 2023 summer holidays began in the German state of Bavaria. At Nuremberg Airport, 28 airlines offer their flight services to 62 destinations. "Demand has been high since the start of the travel season at Easter and continues even outside of holiday periods," says Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Nuremberg Airport. "The multifaceted flight schedule with its diverse offering ensures a broader distribution of the volume beyond the peak travel season." Two other trends: Larger and lower-emission aircraft are increasingly being used, while the number of take-offs and landings is falling. In addition, the utilization of flights is significantly higher than in previous years. The most popular flight destination in summer remains the Turkish bathing paradise of Antalya with around 130.000 passengers alone, which is served by seven different airlines. Mallorca follows with around 85.000 passengers. Greece and mainland Spain are also in high demand. In addition to the classic tourist offers, for example with Corendon, TUI (SmartLynx), Condor or Eurowings, the low-cost share is growing: Ryanair also flies to numerous sun and beach destinations around the Mediterranean, as well as fascinating city destinations such as Dublin or Venice. The offer is supplemented by flights to and from Eastern Europe with Wizz Air or - new - Dan Air, which are mainly used for visiting friends and relatives. Incidentally, the busiest day is expected to be September 5th with an estimated 16.100 passengers.

Ukraine: Ryanair wants to fly again to Lviv, Borispil and Odessa eight weeks after the end of the war

A war instigated by the Russian Federation has been raging in Ukraine since February 24, 2022. As a result, civil air traffic has been suspended for security reasons since then. The low-cost airline Ryanair wants to fly from Ukraine as soon as possible after the conflict ends. To this end, CEO Michael O'Leary traveled to the capital Kiev and met with representatives of the Kiev-Borispil, Lviv and Odessa airports, among others. There was also said to have been a tour of the terminals of the largest airport. The condition of the airport infrastructure is said to be quite good, at least in Borispil. The Ryanair Group is promising that up to 30 Boeing 737-Max could be stationed in Ukraine in the future. These are to be distributed between the three airports mentioned in the previous paragraph. In the medium term, the company also wants to fly from Kherson and Kharkiv again. The last two airports mentioned have suffered severe damage during the course of the war so far, so it can be assumed that it will take much longer before they can be put back online after the fighting has ended. At the moment, it is not foreseeable that the war will end in the short term. High-ranking Russian politicians repeatedly make it clear that they are not even thinking about withdrawing from Ukraine. Rather, Russian propaganda acts as if they will soon be able to completely occupy the neighboring country. If you look at the reality of the daily fighting, then Ryanair's announcements can only be understood as such, because it is not at all foreseeable when the war will be over.

Video competition: hoteliers' association is looking for young talents

The "smartphone generation" - constantly online and yet so difficult to reach. "They are active on completely different platforms than we adults and communicate there in a different way," says Markus Gratzer, Secretary General of the Austrian Hotel Association, summing up the challenge for companies that want to appeal to young people. For the ÖHV, young people are bridging the communication gap between the generations on one of the most used social media channels, in youth language and young imagery. Imagery because Instagram is the chosen campaign channel: According to the Internet Youth Monitor 2023, three out of four young people use the app, 71% of them daily. "We pick up the young people where they often and like to be. There, micro-influencers and multipliers from their midst show them at eye level what makes the internship so cool," says Gratzer, describing the idea behind the campaign. Post a video, tag the ÖHV and the internship company, win great prizes. Tourism students should take part and capture the fun of their internship, the working atmosphere and colleagues, their first experiences and future plans on film: "We want to show the world with you what work in tourism can do: Let's put the best interns and internship companies in the spotlight," says Gratzer, looking forward to inspiring videos. The ÖHV will reward this with an iPhone 14, 2 nights for 2 in one of the 10 Explorer Hotels, JBL flip boxes and earbuds. Prizes are available to anyone who posts their video on Instagram by August 31 and tags the ÖHV and the internship company. The competition is part of the ÖHV industry image and advertising campaign "Young Talents". Find out more at https://oehv.at/video-wettbewerb-praktikum

Notarial deed: Call option for Klagenfurt Airport drawn

Towards the middle of last week, the notarial act that led to the exercise of the call option on Lilihill's share of the airport took place in Klagenfurt City Hall. With the transfer of the purchase price agreed in the original purchase contract, Klagenfurt Airport will then be fully transferred to public ownership again. However, a legal dispute that could last for years is looming. KBV boss Payer explained, among other things, that they had tried to reach a contractual agreement with Lilihill and had sent proposals and deadlines in advance of the notarial act. However, they had not received any response from the Orasch Group. Lilihill lost its majority a few weeks ago because its shares were diluted by not participating in a capital increase. The public sector had unanimously decided to exercise the call option, particularly after the employees initially received no wages and salaries. The division will be as follows in future: 80 percent will be held by the state of Carinthia via KBV and 20 percent by the city of Klagenfurt. The KBV explains that when the money for the buyback is transferred, the airport company's management is instructed to report this to the relevant commercial register court. This will then make the new ownership structure clear. This formal process can take a few days. However, a years-long legal dispute between Lilihill and the public sector is virtually inevitable. The former majority owner claims that they only learned about the exercise of the call option, the KBV's proposal and the notarial act from the media. The private company is particularly upset by the fact that a so-called "cash count" is now to be carried out.

Salzburg: Tourism suffers from inflation

Tourism is back and is showing its full strength in the first half of 2023: 782.595 arrivals and 1.388.051 overnight stays are almost identical to the figures for the pre-Corona year of 2019. However, behind the figures lie developments that pose challenges for the industry. While Salzburg's hotel, restaurant and leisure businesses are preparing for the start of the festival, the statistical results for the first half of the year already show how strongly tourism has returned to the city of Mozart. The 782.696 arrivals are 56,3% higher than the previous year and only 4,5% behind the comparable year 2019. The picture is similar for overnight stays: The 1.388.051 overnight stays correspond to an increase of 51,1% compared to 2022 and are 1,3% behind 2019. With these developments, Salzburg is in line with the international trend: city trips have recovered quickly after the Corona low and are booming. A look at the countries of origin shows the range of tourism in Salzburg. "A quarter of the overnight stays come from Germany and Austria, and with Italy and Switzerland we have two other neighboring countries in the top 10," says Christine Schönhuber, Managing Director of TSG Tourismus Salzburg GmbH. The fact that four overseas markets are also in this top 10 underlines the international appeal of the city of Mozart. “The premium segment with luxury brands and 5* hotels needs guests from long-distance markets.” It is also striking that visitors from these markets travel at different times of the year than guests from German-speaking countries, thus enlivening the off-season and ensuring that hotels are more consistently booked. This control is part of TSG’s communication strategy in long-distance markets. Inflation as a downer Despite the positive booking situation,

Legal dispute between Vienna Airport and green politician enters the next round

The dispute between Flughafen Wien AG and the politician Helga Krismer (Greens) is entering the next round. In the first instance, a lawsuit by the airport operator was dismissed. An appeal is to be lodged against this. The origin of the case pending before the court is that the Green politician made public statements in autumn 2022 that the airport's management interpreted as false allegations. The case has been taken to court. In the first instance, it was decided that these were "borderline, but just about justifiable". Thus, the lawsuit brought by Flughafen Wien AG was dismissed. However, the court does not want to let this go and has announced that an appeal will be lodged. The decision of the first court is therefore not yet final and the judgment of the next higher instance must be awaited. Flughafen Wien AG explains, among other things: "Anyone who accuses a listed company and its bodies of involvement in "intentional money laundering" must prove the truth of these allegations. To date, Dr. Krismer has not been able to provide any kind of proof, because these accusations are completely false and therefore there can be no proof." In a media release, the Green politician concerned speaks of a legal success and even describes the lawsuit by Flughafen Wien AG as a "crash landing for the airport." "The attempt to silence an opposition politician in her democratic task has failed. A stock corporation in which the states of Vienna and Lower Austria hold 0% and the operating facility is on Lower Austrian soil is relevant to my political work. It is my democratic task for
