Dusseldorf: More delays despite fewer flights

Düsseldorf Airport counted around three million passengers during the six-week summer holidays in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. Although there was an increase compared to the previous year, the volume was still well below the pre-crisis volume. During the recently concluded school holidays, around 21.000 take-offs and landings were carried out from NRW's largest airport. Many passengers were heading to Spain, Turkey, Greece and Italy. According to Düsseldorf Airport, flights to these countries were in particularly high demand. However, there is also strong criticism that traffic volumes at this airport are gradually normalizing. In a media statement, the "Kaarster against Aircraft Noise" association complained that there were particularly many flight movements after 2023 p.m. during the 23 summer holidays. Although traffic volumes were 00 percent lower than the record summer of 25, there were 2019 movements after 347 p.m. during the holidays alone this year. According to the anti-aircraft noise association, this is due to poor planning on the part of the airlines. They simply do not allow enough buffer time between flights, so that the delays accumulate by the evening. They are demanding that the exception to delays that has been in place since 23 be adapted. Without naming one or more airlines specifically, the association assumes that the current regulation invites abuse. From observations around midday, they already know which planes are likely to exceed the 00 p.m. limit in the late evening. Düsseldorf actually has a strict ban on night flights, but there are exceptions for delays and looser rules for carriers that have been granted the so-called "night flight ban" by the state government.

Shortage of staff: Lufthansa offers flight attendants high cash rewards

Despite many efforts, Lufthansa still seems to be short of staff. Lufthansa is now offering its flight attendants bonuses of up to 200 euros per day if they work voluntarily on their days off. The portal "Paddle Your Own Kanoo" reports, among other things, that Lufthansa has determined that it does not have enough crew members available to fulfill the 2023 summer flight schedule. The company has so far refrained from using temporary workers. Flight attendants can earn an extra 200 euros for each day they work on days off. In addition, there will be 250 euros per day if you report for work on rest days. However, this would then mean that the number of rest days agreed in the collective agreement would not be met. If the minimum number of flight attendants is not met on a flight, the crew on duty will receive an extra 100 euros per person. Anyone who has to step in as a purser on long-haul flights will also receive 100 euros.

Price cap for flight tickets: Airlines reject Italian plans

The Italian government is annoyed that numerous airlines have increased their ticket prices significantly. A decree is now being prepared that would prohibit charging more than 200 percent of the average price during the summer, at least to/from Sicily and Sardinia. The airlines, represented by the associations Ibar and Assaero, are up in arms against this. Among other things, they argue that such market intervention would not be compatible with EU market rules. Legal remedies are already being considered and warnings are being made that one or two carriers could withdraw aircraft and use them in other countries.

In a ballot, the pilots who fly for Virgin Atlantic and are organized in the Balpa union voted by a 96 percent majority in favor of a strike. The reason for this is concerns about the flight and roster regulations. The BBC reports, among other things, that employee representatives are worried about fatigue and malaise. Virgin Atlantic says it has already responded and plans to negotiate with the union in the upcoming winter of 2023/24.

Summer vacation 2023: Paderborn can exceed the pre-crisis volume by 14 percent

Paderborn Airport was used by 151.836 travelers during North Rhine-Westphalia's summer holidays. In direct comparison with the same period last year, there was an increase of 25 percent. The pre-crisis volume was exceeded by 14 percent. According to a statement from the airport, an increase of around ten percent was initially expected. This was significantly exceeded, which is attributed, among other things, to the fact that the planes to/from Paderborn were heavily used. The most popular destinations included Antalya, Palma de Mallorca, Greek islands, Hurghada in Egypt and the new destinations Alicante and Málaga, which are served by Ryanair. "During the NRW summer holidays in 2023, we had more passengers than we have had in ten years. We are very pleased about this additional boost. The past few weeks have impressively demonstrated how important the home port is to the people in our regions of East Westphalia, Lippe and South Westphalia. The strong figures are an incentive for us to drive forward the further development of the airport and to maintain the high level of service and, if possible, to expand it even further,” said airport managing director Roland Hüser, commenting on the latest passenger figures.

Hainan Airlines celebrates 15 years of presence in Berlin

The Chinese airline Hainan Airlines is celebrating its 15-year presence in Berlin. At the same time, the frequency of flights on the Beijing route is being increased to four rotations per week. In future, flights will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Hainan first served this route in September 2008. At that time, the airline still operated via Berlin-Tegel Airport and had a codeshare agreement with Air Berlin. Due to the corona pandemic, the China flight connection was interrupted for some time. At BER, the route was reinstated in the airline's route network in August 2022 after the corona-related interruption. In the 15 years since the flight connection was launched, Hainan Airlines has operated almost 4.500 flights, carried almost 900.000 passengers and transported more than 56.000 tons of freight. Berlin Airport boss Aletta von Massenbach said: “Congratulations Hainan Airlines on the 15th anniversary of the connection between the German capital region and Beijing. The long-term success shows that the demand for long-haul tourism and business travel is permanently stable in the connected cultural and economic metropolises. The decision for the route enables the twin city relationship between Berlin and Beijing to be brought to life through personal encounters." The flight time on the route is around nine hours from BER to Beijing and around ten hours in the opposite direction. The flights take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays (local time in each case).
