Leipzig Airport wants to become a pioneer in the SAF sector

Leipzig/Halle Airport is to play a greater role in the field of so-called sustainable aviation fuels in the future. Together with Airbus, Condor, DHL, HH2E and Sasol, a corresponding declaration of intent was signed at the third aviation conference held in Hamburg. This was presented to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD). The NetZeroLEJ project has been prepared over the past few months by the signatories together with other partners and with the support of the federal government and the states of Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt. The aim of NetZeroLEJ is to prepare and implement the production and use of sustainable aviation fuels (Sustainable Aviation Fuels, SAF) on an industrial scale. The project is intended to advance the transformation of the aviation sector towards greater sustainability and climate protection. In doing so, it should make a significant contribution to strengthening Germany as a location for industry, technology and innovation. “The aviation industry worldwide is aware of its responsibility for greater climate protection. The large-scale use of CO2-neutrally produced kerosene is the prerequisite for significantly improving the climate impact of aviation in the coming years. Currently, climate-neutral fuels for air traffic are only available in very small quantities. The region around Leipzig/Halle Airport has the innovative power, technology and capacity to implement the required production of several hundred thousand tons of CO2-neutral fuels per year. It can therefore take on a pioneering role worldwide in the field of sustainable air traffic," says Götz Ahmelmann, CEO of MDF AG.

Dortmund Airport exceeds previous year's volume by 25 percent

Up to and including the end of August 2023, Dortmund Airport had 2.041.622 passengers, around a quarter more than in the first eight months of the previous year. However, the volume is still below the figure achieved in 2019. In general, it is clear that - with a few exceptions - almost all German airports have not yet been able to reach the passenger volume they had in 2019. In many EU countries, it has already been exceeded. Among the smaller German airports, it is very noticeable that those with a lot of low-cost traffic are doing better than those from which low-cost airlines largely stay away. In relation to Dortmund: Although overall air traffic is still below the level of the record year 2019, Dortmund Airport is in the fast lane. The airport has repeatedly set new passenger records, which far exceeded the figures from 2019. In a remarkable summer season, the airport recorded the most successful month in its history in July 2023 with 307.377 passengers. This development was confirmed in August with a comparably high passenger volume (306.960 passengers). The figures from the ADV Airport Association confirm this: At the federal level, the airport stands out significantly from other German airports due to steeper growth rates. At the most recent meeting, the airport's supervisory board also gave the green light for the purchase of an additional electric-powered aircraft tug (pusher). Existing electric-powered devices are convincing in daily use and underpin the plan to convert the entire fleet to environmentally friendly drive systems in the future. Dortmund Airport is also to get four new ground power systems. After the conversion of the first parking position has already been completed, four more positions are now to be added.

From March 31, 2024: KM Malta Airlines plc replaces Air Malta as Air Malta

On March 31, 2024, KM Malta Airlines plc is to take over from the loss-making Air Malta plc. The new state carrier will continue to appear to customers as Air Malta. However, there will be a cut in terms of tickets, as bookings that the "old company" can no longer fulfill will be refunded. The Maltese government has been looking for a way to provide the state airline Air Malta with fresh money for some time. Since the company, which was known for high wages and a large number of employees, had repeatedly been subsidized in the past because it was flying in significant losses, Brussels did not give the green light for any Corona aid. The background to this is that a moratorium on further subsidies was ordered as part of the last state capital injection. Only eight aircraft and 400 employees Air Malta's workforce was significantly reduced in several steps, with employees being offered the opportunity to work for the public sector in the future with identical salaries. The problem is that the salaries of civil servants in government departments are lower. This has certainly led to disputes. For those who still work for Air Malta, things could get tight, as the successor company will only have around 400 employees, said Finance Minister Clyde Caruana during a press conference. This will make KM Malta Airlines plc much leaner than the existing company. The fleet will be taken over, but in future only eight Airbus A320/A320neo aircraft will be in the air.
