SAF: Air France-KLM invests in DG Fuels

The Dutch-French Air France-KLM group is investing $4,7 million in the US-based SAF supplier DG Fuels, which plans to build a production facility in the state of Louisiana. The group announced that it hopes that the investment will speed up the construction of the SAF refinery. At the same time, it has secured access to around 75.000 tonnes of SAF per year. These are expected to be delivered from 2029. Before that, an agreement will come into effect which stipulates that at least 2027 tonnes of the synthetic aviation fuel will be delivered from 2036 to 600.000. In the last 12 months, more and more European airlines have announced that they have secured larger quantities of SAF. There is also marketing behind this, because from 2025, the addition of 12 percent SAF will be mandatory, as far as technically permissible. The European Union plans to increase this proportion to 2050 percent by 70. Many airlines see SAF as a kind of interim solution to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Since it is produced from renewable raw materials, it is believed that this fuel is much more environmentally friendly than conventional kerosene. The argument is that the carbon dioxide has already been bound and no additional carbon dioxide from petroleum is released. However, it is often not mentioned that carbon dioxide is also produced when SAF is burned in the engines. It is technically impossible for this not to be the case. Some airlines also try to portray themselves as particularly green and go way overboard when it comes to advertising SAF. Austrian Airlines knowingly advertised

Tarom cannot repay government-guaranteed loans

The Romanian airline Tarom is apparently in acute financial distress, as the company had to admit that it cannot pay the installment due on December 17, 2023 to repay a state-guaranteed loan. The loan was granted by Banca Transilvania. The state acts as a guarantor, so it can be assumed that the credit institution will ask the state to pay if it does not pay after a reminder. This is not the first case in which a Romanian airline is no longer able to repay a state-guaranteed loan. For example, this also happened with the bankrupt Blue Air. The former low-cost airline has now been nationalized for the purpose of disposal. A comeback is considered almost completely out of the question. Tarom must transfer an installment of 17 million Romanian lei (about 2023 euros) by December 8,224, 1.650.248 at the latest. According to the company, it is not in a position to do this. The government is currently not even considering abandoning the state carrier, as it is convinced that it will be able to operate it profitably from 2025. Documents from the Ministry of Transport show that Tarom has been able to pay the installments, including interest, which are due quarterly, from its own resources so far this year. The government is now considering injecting additional money into Tarom through a capital increase. However, this is only supposed to be a "reshuffle", as an already approved subsidy for Timisoara Airport is to be cancelled.
