Afghanistan: Two more carriers before Kabul comeback

After Flydubai, Air Arabia and Jazeera Airways also want to resume their non-stop flights to Kabul. Until the first-mentioned carrier made its comeback, connections by foreign airlines were suspended. Now the Taliban government is also hoping for tourist interest. According to the announcement, Air Arabia will fly to Kabul several times a week from Sharjah from January 10, 2024. This route was already in the portfolio in the past, but the service was suspended about two years ago. According to the Afghan Ministry of Transport, however, it will not stop with Air Arabia, but Air Jazeera has also successfully applied for route rights. Ideally, there would then be three international carriers that have reactivated their connections to/from Kabul. The government of Afghanistan also sees the fact that there are three low-cost airlines as a great opportunity, because it hopes that leisure traffic can be boosted. Even before the Taliban came to power again, Afghanistan played a rather insignificant role in tourism. In the meantime, two domestic carriers, Kam Air and Ariana Afghan Airlines, have at least partially reactivated their route networks. Before the regime change, a total of six foreign carriers operated at the capital airport. Currently, there is one, namely Flydubai. With the upcoming comebacks of Air Arabia and Air Jazeera, there would be three. Air India, Emirates and Turkish Airlines also had Kabul in their route network in the past. The three network airlines mentioned have no plans to return. At present, there are signs that the relations between Taliban Afghanistan and other states in this region are deteriorating.

Istanbul: Sabiha Gökçen Airport should continue to play a central role

Sabiha Gökçen Airport, located in the Asian part of the metropolis of Istanbul, has had a second runway for a few weeks. For the Erdogan government, this airport continues to play an important role in the aviation strategy. The "second airport" was originally built to relieve the then chronically overloaded Atatürk Airport. The latter has since been taken offline for regular passenger flights and is now only used for business jets and cargo flights. Aircraft maintenance also plays an important role today. However, the "main airport" has been the so-called "New Airport" for a few years now. This has large capacity reserves and can be expanded as needed. Nevertheless, the Turkish government wants to continue to rely on two airports for passenger flights in Istanbul. Recently, major investments have also been made in Sabiha Gökçen. For example, a second runway has been built, which only recently went into operation. Although low-cost airlines also take off from “IST”, this segment is far less developed than at “SAW”, where, for example, Peagsus Air and Anadolujet (in future: Ajet) have large bases. Most recently, Istanbul-Sabiha Gökçen Airport had around 2022 million passengers in 31. For the whole of 2022, 37 million passengers are expected. Apart from the dip caused by the corona pandemic, the numbers have been pointing inexorably upwards for many years. From the point of view of the Istanbul city administration, the “second airport” is indispensable, because many tourists would also come to the city via it. At the same time, Sabiha Gökçen would ensure that the capacities available at the New Airport

Ita Airways: Ex-Alitalia assets effectively worthless

Shortly before starting flight operations in 2021, Ita Airways took over some assets from its predecessor Alitalia. These included slots in Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate, customer databases and aircraft. They only paid a symbolic euro for this, but the value was said to be much lower. The aircraft "inherited" from Alitalia are said to have no real value, as they are all leased aircraft. Ita Airways had to conclude new contracts with the respective owners. According to a report by the Corriere della Sera, only the take-off and landing rights in Milan-Linate are said to have a significant monetary value. The slots in Rome-Fiumicino, however, are not, as there is sufficient capacity at the airport and even if the slots were redistributed after Alitalia left the market, Ita Airways would have had the required slots. If you take all factors into account and offset them against each other, Ita Airways actually paid significantly too much. A symbolic euro was transferred, but the actual value of Alitalia's aviation assets was said to be minus 4,8 million euros. This means that the predecessor should have paid the successor money for the areas to be taken over. However, this was not possible due to the insolvency proceedings, so the Ita management agreed with Alitalia's insolvency administrators on the symbolic euro. In its report, the Italian newspaper cites Professor Giovanni Fiori, who was one of Alitalia's three insolvency administrators at the time and in this capacity carried out the valuation of the assets. The entire group of companies, to which Alitalia Cityliner belonged, was valued at 4,8 million euros.
