Analysis of the early bird season: This is how Austrians book their holidays

Snow and ice in Austria have fueled the desire to travel. Bookings for the summer holidays are already above the previous year's level. This is shown by the current figures from the travel comparison portal HolidayCheck. Austrians have always used the Christmas holidays and January to start planning their holidays with family and friends. This is why the organizers are starting with the first early bird offers as early as autumn. For the travel agency industry, the days around the turn of the year until the end of February are peak season. As a result, it is now very easy to predict what the travel year 2024 will look like and what trends and tendencies there will be. By far the greatest interest is in the Turkish Riviera. In terms of prices, the region has been stable since October and is usually the cheapest. "It is still a bit cool for a beach holiday at Easter this year. The region offers ideal conditions for enjoying spring by the sea and many hotels have large indoor pools," explains Christoph Heinzmann, travel expert at HolidayCheck. Hurghada is in second place in search queries over Easter. Interest from holidaymakers in Marsa Alam has also increased significantly since November. Prices for both Egyptian regions have been falling since October. The only exception to this is the Easter holidays. "If you want to go swimming at Easter, you can hardly avoid Egypt and demand is driving up costs," explains Christoph Heinzmann. Mallorca is the third most popular destination. The good news: prices have been falling steadily since October. On average, prices across the top 15 destinations were +2 percent Summer holidays 2024 How much holiday Austrians want

Onset of winter: Lufthansa proactively cancels flights

Due to the fact that heavy snowfall and freezing rain are forecast for Wednesday, January 17, 2024 in parts of Germany, some airports are experiencing operational restrictions. Lufthansa has already begun to drastically reduce its flight schedule. Fraport AG, operator of Frankfurt am Main Airport, is asking travelers to check with the airline about the current status of their booking before leaving for the airport. The background to this is that Lufthansa and numerous other airlines have already canceled many flights in advance due to the weather forecast. According to the operator, a total of 17 flights have been registered for Wednesday, January 2024, 1.030. How many of these can actually be carried out is currently completely unclear. Germany's second largest airport, Munich, also expects that there could be weather-related restrictions on Wednesday at least until lunchtime. The Bavarian airport has proactively reduced the available capacity. As a result, market leader Lufthansa in particular has to cancel many flights. Lufthansa explained, among other things, that passengers affected by cancellations will be contacted proactively wherever possible and offered alternative travel options. It is currently assumed that there could be weather-related restrictions in flight operations on Thursday and possibly also on Friday. According to the current forecast, the crane group assumes that operations will stabilize on Friday of this week. Lufthansa asks passengers whose connections have been canceled not to travel to the airport, but to contact the airline via the hotline or other contact options if necessary. Safety comes first, but passengers also have

Munich Airport is organizing 450 million euros on the capital market

Munich Airport has raised around 425 million euros on the capital market in the form of a promissory note issue. Around 360 million euros of this is to be invested in infrastructure, among other things. The Bavarian airport also wants to pay off existing debts. To finance investments in infrastructure and to repay existing loans, FMG successfully issued funds totaling 425 million euros as part of a promissory note transaction. The terms offered ranged from three to ten years, with fixed and variable interest rates. "We want to offer our passengers a state-of-the-art infrastructure more than 30 years after the airport opened, and are therefore investing large sums in the construction projects on the campus. The extremely successful promissory note transaction confirms the confidence of banks and investors in a successful future for our airport," says Nathalie Leroy, Managing Director for Finance and Infrastructure.

Annual figures: Bremen Airport with 1.814.892 passengers

The northern German airport of Bremen was used by a total of 2023 passengers in 1.814.892. This represents an increase of 2022 percent compared to 21,6, but the airport was 20 percent below the volume in 2019. "The good development in 2023 makes us optimistic for 2024, even if the challenges, for example with the increase in air traffic tax planned from May, will not diminish," says Marc Cezanne, Managing Director of Bremen Airport. "In 2024, we will have a wide range of flights with a further increase in the number of seats available. The significantly increased capacity utilization of aircraft landing and taking off in Bremen is very positive for the environment and profitability. With a capacity utilization of 78,3 percent, the capacity utilization achieved in 2023 increased by 5,6 percentage points compared to the previous year and was thus the highest since 2000. We are particularly pleased about the new SWISS route at its hub in Zurich, the expansion of Turkish Airlines' Istanbul flights by 40 percent and the new Vienna route by Austrian Airlines from May. The connection to now six international hubs increases the attractiveness of our airport for holiday and business travelers." Flight movements in 2023 amounted to 27.042 take-offs and landings. This is an increase of 7,7 percent compared to the previous year (25.083) and corresponds to around 75 percent of the movements in the pre-crisis year of 2019 (36.307). The most popular destinations in 2023 were – in addition to the hubs Munich, Frankfurt and Amsterdam – the Germans’ favourite island Mallorca, Antalya, London, Alicante, Izmir and Heraklion. Cargo volumes are settling at a level that is realistic for Bremen Airport.

Weaker demand: Croatia Airlines is cutting frequencies on some routes

The airline Croatia Airlines is reducing frequencies on some routes from Zagreb in February 2024. The extent of the reduction amounts to around seven percent of total capacity and destinations in the DA-CH region are also affected. According to a report by Ex-Yu-Aviation.com, this is because demand in February 2024 is much lower than Croatia Airlines originally expected. As a result, the number of weekly flights is being reduced as a precaution. Accordingly, in February 2014 there will only be eleven flights to Vienna and Brussels instead of 14. Sarajevo will be reduced to 12 rotations per week, Zurich to 13, Skopje to 10, Munich to 13 and Frankfurt am Main will "only" fly 20 times per week. The cuts are currently limited to February 2024.

Airbus removes major Iran Air order from backlog

It was a few years ago, but airlines in Iran were able to order brand new aircraft from Airbus, Boeing and other manufacturers for a short period of time. Some aircraft were delivered, but then the US government reinstated sanctions. The European manufacturer kept a large order on its books for a longer period of time. Since 2018, it has not been allowed to deliver any aircraft to Iran. According to a report by Flightglobal, Airbus has finally removed the 97 commercial aircraft that have not yet been delivered, including 38 A330s and 16 A350s, from its order book. The manufacturer therefore assesses the situation in such a way that it cannot be assumed that the order can be fulfilled within a realistic time frame.

Amsterdam: Corendon wants to set up rail feeders

The tour operator Corendon wants to set up train connections between Brussels and Amsterdam-Schiphol airports. In a second step, Düsseldorf will also be connected by rail. For some time now, there have been non-stop connections to Curaçao, which are operated from Amsterdam-Schiphol with an Airbus A2-350 operated by World900Fly. Now it is clear that Corendon obviously needs feeder services. In a discussion with "De Telegraaf", the company explained that it wants to implement these by rail. The company is thinking of special trains in Corendon's colors. The exact implementation is still being worked out, so it is currently unclear whether these will actually be special trains or whether they will be entered into cooperations ala Rail%Rly.
