Flight attendants: Verdi and Eurowings reach an agreement

At the beginning of this week, the Verdi union and Eurowings agreed on higher wages for flight attendants. They are to receive between 10,8 and 14,4 percent more pay each month. There is also a one-off payment of 2.000 euros. The lowest salary level to date is also to be abolished. Long-term employees and senior flight attendants (pursers) are to receive more pay in general in the future, as their positions are to be upgraded in the tables. Verdi is satisfied with the outcome of the negotiations. It is emphasized that a necessary increase in pay was negotiated. Now it is up to the Verdi members who fly for Eurowings, as they still have to vote on whether the compromise is accepted or not.

Salzburg Airport with a new play area for children

In cooperation with Teekanne, a new indoor playground for children has been opened at Salzburg Airport. It is located between the Relay Shop, So Coffee, the Resch & Frisch bakery and the Reisewelt travel agency. The idea came from the Property & Real Estate Management department, which is responsible for making optimal use of the airport's space. The play area represents real added value, especially for parents who travel with children or visit the airport to pick up guests, for example. Two play equipment in the form of a jumbo jet and a helicopter offer fun and entertainment for the little ones. Accompanying persons can now make themselves comfortable on the six airplane seats that have been set up in the Kids Area. "An airport is its own little cosmos and a lively marketplace. Customers need catering and retail options as well as places that invite them to linger. The catering units on the roof terrace level, on the first floor and in the departure area ensure this, as do the offers in the row of shops on the ground floor. The Kids Area is another component in the space utilization concept, which is intended to contribute to an optimized customer experience,” says Wolfgang Mittermayr, Head of Property & Real Estate Management.

Public transport: Burgenland and Lower Austria want to cook their own soup

In the Austrian federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland, local public transport has been in a phase of transformation for many years. Commercial transport by companies is increasingly being replaced by transport commissioned by the public sector. For many years there were even two transport organizations: the Eastern Region Transport Association, which mainly organized Vienna and rail transport, and the competing Lower Austria-Burgenland Transport Association, which mainly operated bus routes. There was a lot of overlap and for years tickets were only accepted by each other under certain conditions. Different tariffs were confusing for passengers. The VVNB was integrated into the VOR in July 2016 and thus dissolved. Since then there has only been the Eastern Region Transport Association, whose shareholders are the federal states of Vienna, Lower Austria and Burgenland. Commercial operation versus the ordering principle There were very big differences, however: While the VVNB was an association of companies, the ordering principle has always applied in the VOR. In concrete terms, this means that in the no longer existing association, the bus operators operated their own line concessions on their own account. Subsidies were available upon application from the respective federal states and transfers to buses from other association members were possible because the tickets issued were recognized by each other. In the Eastern Region Transport Association, the operation of the lines is put out to public tender and the best bidder is awarded the contract. The integration of the VVNB and the VOR had significant consequences for the bus operators. The motor vehicle line concessions were no longer renewed when the respective permits expired. Instead, the Eastern Region Transport Association put the operation out to tender again. In some regions, this meant that the previous operator

UFO calls for higher wages for Cityline flight attendants

The flight attendants' union UFO is demanding higher salaries for its members who fly with Lufthansa Cityline. They are also criticizing the fact that the growth once promised has not materialized or has been transferred to other AOCs in the Kranich group of companies. They are demanding a 15 percent increase in salaries for an 18-month period, a one-off payment of 3.000 euros, and the recognition of flight time for standby and reserve services. "For years, Lufthansa CityLine's cabin crew have been cautious about their salaries because this was always linked to the employer's promises of growth and job security. However, these promises were never kept. The workforce is stagnating, growth is taking place in other AOCs in the Lufthansa Group, and the newly founded and non-union City Airlines is now threatening the jobs of CityLine colleagues. Last but not least, the CityLine team has played a major role in the Lufthansa Group's current success, both during and after the pandemic. From our point of view, these points are enough for Lufthansa CityLine to finally recognize and reward this with appropriate compensation,” explains Rachid Madmar, UFO tariff officer and UFO negotiator at Lufthansa CityLine.

Vienna Airport: Customs had 4.146 seizures in 2023

More passengers at Vienna-Schwechat Airport also means more work for customs officials. As a result, the 83 employees of the Ministry of Finance have also had to record significantly more arrests. Last year, Vienna-Schwechat Airport was used by 29,5 million passengers. According to the Ministry of Finance, customs officers carried out exactly 48.852 risk-based checks. In 4.146 of them, the officers found something. The successful checks show the broad range of customs' responsibilities: around 113 kg of narcotic drugs, 1 million euros in undeclared cash, around 15.000 items of illegal or counterfeit medicines and 3,8 tons of food in accordance with animal health law were found. "Vienna Airport recorded a strong increase in passengers in 2023. Accordingly, smuggling attempts also increased again. However, our customs officers use their experience, risk analyses and technical and animal support to carry out targeted and extremely successful checks, as last year's results show. The work is extremely important for protecting the Austrian economy and population. I would like to thank our customs officers for their professional and committed work," said Finance Minister Magnus Brunner. "Over 29,5 million passengers visited Vienna Airport in 2023. Friendliness and service orientation are particularly important in creating a pleasant travel atmosphere for guests from Austria and the surrounding area. The customs authorities make a significant contribution to ensuring that the airport is one of the best in Europe in terms of customer friendliness, passenger quality, security and short cargo handling times. A big thank you to all customs officers for this. Proper customs clearance also plays a major role in the air freight sector. In order to support the customs authorities as best as possible as a logistics industry, Vienna Airport is launching a new customs clearance program together with
