Innsbruck: Austrian Airlines discontinues midday flights to Vienna

From March 2024, there will no longer be any midday flights on the Austrian Airlines domestic route between Innsbruck and Vienna. The carrier is thinning out the route further and will only offer double the daytime flight in the future. This means that Tyrol continues to be cut off from the Lufthansa Group's route network. It was recently announced that sister company Air Dolomiti will no longer serve the hub connection to the Lufthansa hub in Frankfurt am Main in the 2024 summer flight schedule. This means that Innsbruck Airport is losing an important route. The airport's management hopes that the airline will take over Skyalps. But there is a catch: Although there is great interest from the South Tyroleans, there is currently no cooperation agreement with Lufthansa. Passengers would have little benefit from a pure point-to-point connection, because then two separate tickets would have to be bought and any luggage would have to be checked in again in Frankfurt am Main. Since Skyalps has not yet obtained the so-called IOSA audit, it is unlikely that the Kranich Group will enter into any cooperation beforehand - regardless of whether it is interlining, code sharing or wet leasing. A clear indication of this is that Austrian Airlines has already turned down the offer to take over domestic routes. AUA will not work with Skyalps - at least for the time being - but has sought out another cooperation partner. Lufthansa has not yet made its decision, but the group subsidiary's decision to forego services from or cooperation with Skyalps on its routes is possibly an indication that the Kranich Group is not ready to take on the routes from

Stay for up to ten days: Play sets up a stopover program

The Icelandic low-cost airline Play is introducing a new stopover program. This is intended to enable travelers to spend a stopover in Iceland before their onward flight. It should also be possible for this to last several days. Play is a low-cost airline that, unlike competitors such as Ryanair and Easyjet, does not operate according to the point-to-point model, but rather according to the hub-and-spoke principle. The airline specializes in transporting passengers between the United States of America and Europe - with a change in Keflavik. The company now wants to enable passengers to delay changing planes in Iceland in order to be able to explore the island state. According to a statement from Play, stopovers of up to ten days should be possible. There should be no additional costs for this and the stopovers should be able to be booked independently via the low-cost airline's homepage and app. Important: Any overnight costs are not included and must be organized and paid for by the airline itself. "Play has taken advantage of its proximity to Europe to offer travelers convenient flights at affordable prices. The new stopover option now brings even more benefits to our guests," emphasizes Birgir Jonsson, CEO of Play Airlines. "Instead of just having a few hours' layover in Iceland, travelers can spend more time in this popular destination and experience everything our home country has to offer. These long stays are a win-win for both us and our passengers, as they enable the discovery tour at a comparatively low price." In June 2024, Play will celebrate its third "birthday". The carrier will then have been in the air for three years.

Brno Airport with new passenger record

The Czech airport Brno had a total of 2023 passengers in the recently concluded year 686.933. This set a new record and exceeded the pre-crisis volume by 26,5 percent. Brno's previous peak was in 2011 with around 550.000 travelers. The airport attributes the recent increase in passengers mainly to charter flights organized by the travel agency Cedok. The only year-round scheduled route last year was the London (Stansted)-Brno route.

Cancellations and delays: ÖAMTC gives valuable tips

It happens again and again that flights are cancelled or delayed. Affected travellers often do not know whether they are entitled to compensation. "The first point of contact for information about cancelled or delayed flights is the airline itself, which is also legally obliged to provide information - in the case of package tours, the tour operator is also the contact person. Airlines offer up-to-date and detailed information about the booked flight online or by telephone and sometimes also inform passengers directly, e.g. via SMS," says ÖAMTC lawyer Verena Pronebner. ECJ ruling - compensation for flight delays only upon arrival at the gate If a flight arrives more than three hours late - and there are no "extraordinary circumstances" to blame - passengers are generally entitled to a flat-rate compensation. The amount depends on the route booked: for flights up to 1.500 km, the compensation is 250 euros, for flights between 1.500 km and 3.500 km, it is 400 euros, and for flights over 600 km, 3.500 euros is paid. If the airline offers an alternative flight, these compensation payments can be reduced by 50 percent under certain circumstances. According to a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice in Luxembourg, however, airline passengers lose their right to compensation in the event of a delay if they do not arrive at the gate on time - even if the flight then arrives at its destination more than three hours late - or if they independently book an alternative flight that will take them to their destination less than three hours late. "In concrete terms, this means: If I know before I leave for the airport that

Dr. Richard converts coaches to HVO-100

The Dr. Richard Group has announced that in future the coaches stationed in Vienna and Salzburg will be operated with the diesel replacement fuel HVO-100. This is intended to cause fewer carbon dioxide emissions than conventional diesel. Managing Director Ludwig Richard said: "Compared to other means of road transport, coaches are very climate-friendly. Compared to private transport in particular, buses are one of the most climate-friendly means of road transport." While more and more electric buses and biogas buses are on the Dr. Richard Group's routes, the switch to alternative drive options in the coach sector has proven to be more challenging. "Coaches have to cover long distances, which is unfortunately often difficult to reconcile with alternative forms of propulsion. We are all the more pleased to have now found a more sustainable solution with HVO-100," explains Philipp Zechner, Managing Director of the Dr. Richard coach division. The coaches stationed in Vienna and Salzburg will initially be affected by the change.
