Global Airlines has purchased its second Airbus A380

The UK-based startup Global Airlines has announced that it has purchased an Airbus A380-800 last operated by China Southern Airlines. It is the aircraft with the serial number 120, which was registered with the Chinese operator as B-6140. Since Global Airlines itself does not have an AOC or operating license, the superjumbo is to be operated by Hifly Malta. The aircraft, which was last parked in the desert, was registered in the Maltese aviation register as 9H-GLOBL. According to the announcement, the aircraft is to be transferred in the next few weeks. According to its own information, Global Airlines has now purchased two Airbus A380-800s. In addition to the 9H-GLOBL, there is the 9H-MIP, which was previously used by Hifly Malta for ACMI and charter flights. In 2020, the Maltese carrier parted ways with this model. This aircraft, which has the serial number 6, was originally delivered to Singapore Airlines. Global Airlines plans to launch with a fleet of just Airbus A380s. The purchase of the superjumbos is justified by the fact that no ongoing leasing payments would be incurred. It is also quite possible that these will be relatively cheap, as there is no real used market for this type of aircraft. Apart from Global Airlines, there is no demand.

Cologne/Bonn Airport has published its sustainability report

For the first time, Cologne/Bonn Airport has published a so-called sustainability statement based on the criteria of the German Sustainability Index. The information contained relates to events in 2022. "The topic of sustainability is firmly anchored in our corporate strategy, and that is why we are very pleased about the first publication of a DNK statement," says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Cologne/Bonn Airport GmbH. "Many different specialist departments worked intensively together to prepare the statement in order to present our diverse sustainability activities and identified potential." The DNK is a cross-sector transparency standard developed by the Council for Sustainable Development (RNE). It specifies 20 criteria and selected performance indicators on the basis of which sustainability efforts are recorded annually. With the declaration, the airport will in future implement the requirements of the EU's CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive), which will be mandatory from 2025. Furthermore, the German Sustainability Code, with its specific questions, provides a condensed, user-friendly and standardized framework for sustainability reporting. It is internationally recognized and provides comparable indicators - both for your own progress and for comparison with other companies.

Airlines and airports are investing more money in their IT

The Sita 2023 report, released earlier this week, shows that airlines and airports invested significantly more in their IT in 2023 than in the previous year. The report estimates that airlines spent around $34,5 billion and airports $10,8 billion on modernising their IT infrastructure. Around two-thirds of the responsible CEOs expect these expenditures to continue to rise. Airports also increased their IT spending as a proportion of revenue in 2022 and 2023, while the business benefited from a surge in travel demand - a sign of the critical role technology will play in the next generation of travel. Key investment priorities for aviation CIOs include biometric passenger enrollment, using data to increase operational efficiency and green solutions to optimise energy consumption and emissions.
