The Maltese airline Universal Air intends to offer non-stop flights to Munich, Corfu and Luqa from the Hungarian regional airport Pécs in the 2024 summer flight schedule. These will be served with de Havilland Dash 8s. There have been no regular scheduled flights from Pécs Airport for many years. Until the early 2000s, Tyrolean Airways offered feeder flights to the AUA hub in Vienna, but the ultra-short-haul service was discontinued. The airline has been waiting for a comeback on the scheduled service for around 16 years. There are occasional charter flights. With a runway length of just 1.500 meters, it is almost unsuitable for the medium-haul jets of the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 types used by low-cost airlines. The jets would possibly be subject to payload restrictions. In a surprise move, the Maltese airline Universal Air has now announced three scheduled routes from Pécs at a press conference. Initially, flights to Munich will be operated on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from March 26, 2024. A new flight will be added on Wednesdays from May 15, 2024. On the same day, a flight connection to the Greek island of Corfu will also be launched, which will also be served on Wednesdays. Universal Air plans to offer two weekly flights between Luqa (Malta) and Pécs from March 26, 2024. These will be served on Tuesdays and Fridays. The three routes will be flown with de Havilland Dash 8-400 turboprop aircraft. The Maltese carrier will soon add a sixth aircraft to its fleet. Pécs Airport stated in response to a request that Universal Air will start selling tickets on March 1, 2024.
