Belgrade: Marathon Airlines Embraer 195 badly damaged during takeoff

The Embraer 195 with the registration OY-GDC, operated by Marathon Airlines, was severely damaged at Belgrade Airport on Sunday, February 18, 2024. The aircraft was supposed to fly to Düsseldorf on behalf of Air Serbia. The pilots did not use the full length of the runway. During takeoff, the fuselage of the aircraft was severely damaged. Due to the weight of the fuel, the regional jet had to circle for about an hour before it could land again in Belgrade. It then became apparent how badly the OY-GDC was damaged. According to reports, the aircraft came into contact with lighting lights during takeoff. It is suspected that the jet was too heavy to use the shortened runway or that the pilots did not take off quickly enough. The Serbian air accident investigation authority has already started its work.

German airports continue to be well below the EU average

According to the industry association ADV, German airports were used by 2024 million passengers in January 12,3. This means that the airports had 1,28 million fewer passengers than in December 2023. In direct comparison with the same month last year, German airports were able to increase by 11,8 percent, but these were still 22,6 percent below the volume they had before the corona pandemic. The ADV notes that Germany is far behind other European countries in terms of recovering from the crisis. It is around 15 percent below the EU average. It also points out that in some countries the passenger numbers that they had before the pandemic have not only been reached again, but even exceeded. Compared to January 2023, there were recently 4,9 percent more commercial flight movements in Germany. 117.659 movements were counted in the first month of the current year. This corresponds to approximately 71,7 percent of the value achieved in January 2019. What is particularly striking is that domestic traffic in Germany has continued to decline sharply. Although it was able to increase by 14,7 percent compared to the same month last year, the volume of domestic traffic in Germany is only about half of what it was before the Corona pandemic. This could also be due to the fact that numerous routes have been discontinued, providers such as Easyjet have largely withdrawn from domestic traffic and prices on the routes that have been reduced have in some cases increased sharply. In European traffic, there were a total of 2024 million passengers in January 7,66. This represents 82,6 percent of the figure that was achieved before the Corona pandemic.

Fix: Thai Airways has ordered 45 Boeing 787-9s

During the Singapore Air Show, Star Alliance member Thai Airways officially confirmed that it had ordered 45 B787-9s from US aircraft manufacturer Boeing. For several weeks, there had been intense speculation that the carrier could be behind an order anonymously listed in Boeing's backlog. Now it is official, as Thai Airways came out as such at the trade fair. This will significantly increase the existing Dreamliner fleet. European manufacturer Airbus may have also been vying for the order before. However, US competitor Boeing won the race. Thai Airways International's long-haul fleet currently consists of three Airbus A330-300s, 18 Airbus A350-900s, five Boeing 777-200ERs, 17 Boeing 777-300ERs, six Boeing 787-8s and two Boeing 787-9s. A number of aircraft from previous orders are still pending delivery. The Star Alliance member was hit particularly hard by the corona pandemic, as Thailand's entry and quarantine regulations were comparatively strict and tourists were not allowed to enter the country for a long period of time. Revenues plummeted to virtually zero, so that Thai Airways had to file for creditor protection in 2020. This meant that an extensive restructuring program had to be carried out. The fleet was massively reduced and the Airbus A380 aircraft were also disposed of. The low-cost airline Thai Smile was recently merged into the parent company. According to an official statement, the order for 45 Boeing 787-9s was already finalized in December 2023. Since then, Boeing has kept this anonymously in the backlog. Carriers are always waiting for important aviation trade fairs to
