Eddie Wilson: “The German aviation market is broken”

Low-cost airline Ryanair has sharply criticized the increase in the air transport tax decided by the German government. The price increase, which is due to come into force in May 2024, is 24 percent and is described by the carrier as "absurd." "It is incomprehensible that the German government wants to increase the air transport tax by a massive 24% when Germany's post-Covid recovery is being crippled by high air transport taxes and fees, which are already among the highest in Europe, especially in key tourism destinations such as Berlin and Cologne, where traffic volumes are a fraction of what they could be if access costs were significantly reduced. The German air transport market is broken and urgently needs reform if it is to grow again. "The German government urgently needs to reduce its high aviation taxes and security fees, as well as airport charges, to make German airports more competitive so that low-cost airlines like Ryanair can offer German passengers growth, choice and low fares and bring much-needed competition to Lufthansa's German high-fare monopoly," said Ryanair DAC Managing Director Eddie Wilson. The German federal government has already decided before the end of 2023 that it will raise the already controversial aviation tax to repair the ailing state budget. Since then, there has been considerable resistance from the aviation industry, but also from business and tourism.

Pilatus with a successful 2023 financial year

The 2023 financial year was a great success for Pilatus. Despite a still challenging period, 148 aircraft were delivered thanks to unbroken high demand. With sales of 1,478 billion Swiss francs, an EBIT of 240 million Swiss francs and orders received of 1,513 billion Swiss francs, Pilatus closed the past year with a top result. Compared to the already very successful 2022, Pilatus achieved a ten percent increase in sales and a six percent higher operating result. The total number of aircraft delivered is also impressive: a total of 47 PC-24s and 101 PC-12s were handed over to customers last year. In the Government Aviation division, Pilatus was able to book a follow-up order: the renowned Spanish Air Force has decided to purchase 16 more PC-21s. In May, the 2000th PC-12 was also delivered to long-standing customer PlaneSense - and in October, Pilatus celebrated the launch of the new PC-24, which has a significantly higher payload and range. In addition to these highlights, which have shaped the past year, Pilatus also had to contend with some turbulence: the ongoing problems with the supply chains and supply bottlenecks have had a negative impact on production. Hansueli Loosli, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Pilatus, assesses the past year very positively overall: "We invested a lot in 2023: in products, employees, growth, infrastructure, digitization - and all of this with a constant focus on the needs of our customers." Markus Bucher, CEO of Pilatus, adds: "The results are impressive and lay the foundation for a promising, successful and sustainable future."
