Rostec has to postpone series production of the MS-21 again

The Irkut MS-21 should have been in active scheduled service long ago, but the project is several years behind schedule. Now there is another delay, as Rostec manager Sergei Chemezov does not expect series production to start before 2025 or 2026. The MS-21 is an important part of Russia's aviation strategy, as the model is intended to help the company become independent of Western aircraft types. Like the Sukhoi Superjet, this aircraft did not find any significant response on the international market. Most of the pre-orders therefore come from Russian airlines or local lessors. Some of the lessors are indirectly state-owned. The MS-21 project is already characterized by the fact that it is several years behind schedule. Now the state news agency Interfax is reporting, citing Rostec manager Sergei Chemezov, that series production cannot start this year, but in 2025 or 2026 at the earliest. This means another delay. The state-owned Aeroflot Group was supposed to take delivery of the first MS-2022 in 21. This has not happened yet. In the aftermath of the military attack on Ukraine, the company was faced with the problem that numerous components purchased from abroad could no longer be obtained due to the sanctions. Most recently, it was said that mass production would begin this year and that Aeroflot would receive six units this year. In 2021, the MS-21-300 received type approval from the Civil Aviation Authority of the Russian Federation. At the time, it was planned that the first aircraft would be powered by Pratt engines.

Austria: City tourism almost at pre-crisis level

Austria's state capitals and the federal capital Vienna have largely left the consequences of the pandemic behind them. With 25,7 million overnight stays in 2023, they reached around 99% of their 2019 level. Their share of overall Austrian tourism is back to pre-pandemic levels. "The previous year was entirely dominated by city tourism catching up. It returned to its long-standing role as a value-added engine, innovation driver and guarantor of year-round jobs," explains Vienna's tourism director Norbert Kettner in his role as chairman of ARGE Städte, the city tourism working group of the eight Austrian state capitals and the federal capital. Together they recorded 2023 overnight stays in 25.675.000. This represents an increase of 27% compared to 2022. Compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019 - which counted 25.979.000 overnight stays - they were only around 2023% lower in 1. In tourism as a whole, 2023 overnight stays were counted in 151.169.000. Austria without its capital cities achieved 125.494.000 overnight stays. The share of overnight stays in the capital of the total Austrian volume was therefore 17% - and was thus exactly at the same level as in 2019. Two thirds (67%) of overnight stays in the capital in 2023 were counted in Vienna.
