Strikes literally paralyze Frankfurt Airport

The strike by Lufthansa security staff and ground staff at Frankfurt Airport means that there will be no regular flight operations on March 7, 2024. Many providers have already canceled their connections as a precautionary measure. Due to the fact that Lufthansa ground staff are on strike, initially only the airlines of the Kranich Group and those airlines that have commissioned Lufthansa with passage ground handling would be affected. However, the Verdi union in Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main is also calling on security staff to go on strike. As a result, according to Fraport AG, no officially prescribed security checks are possible outside the transit area. In other words: travelers cannot be checked in Frankfurt am Main and without them, entering the security area is prohibited by the authorities. Transfer passengers, provided they come from the Schengen area, do not have to be checked again. Fraport AG appears to be setting up emergency staff for transfer passengers coming from a non-Schengen destination. However, travelers who are affected are strongly advised not to leave the security area, because there is no turning back due to the lack of open control lines. According to Fraport AG, people who want to fly from Frankfurt on March 7, 2024, should not come to the airport at all, because the "Siko" lines will be closed. This means that it is not possible to board the planes. Some flight connections, especially those with many transfer passengers on board, are still scheduled to operate. There are also occasional planes leaving Frankfurt Airport empty in order to be able to transport passengers in the other direction. Affected passengers are strongly advised to contact their airline and in particular to inform them about a possible

Lufthansa and Cityline flight attendants vote for strike

Following the strike by Lufthansa ground staff, which begins on March 7, 2024, flight attendants could soon go on strike as well. The Ufo union has announced that the cabin crew of Lufthansa and its regional subsidiary Cityline have almost unanimously voted in favor of a strike. For around a week, Ufo members who work as flight attendants for Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cityline were called upon to take part in two separate ballots. According to union information, both companies recorded "the highest participation in a ballot". At Lufthansa, 96,28 percent voted in favor of work stoppages and at CItyline, 97,84 percent. "The high participation in the ballots shows us that our members clearly agree with our demands and are prepared to go on industrial action for them. But it is not just our members who are ready: the entire cabin crew at Lufthansa and CityLine seem determined and combative; We could also see this in the large number of new members joining," says Joachim Vázquez Bürger, CEO of Ufo. The collective bargaining negotiations at both Lufthansa and its subsidiary Cityline are considered to be completely deadlocked. According to union statements, management has not yet responded to the demands to the extent that employee representatives had hoped. A few years ago, Lufthansa flight operations were completely paralyzed for several days by a strike by cabin crew organized by Ufo. If this union calls for a strike again, passengers must expect that there could be significant effects on flight operations. "Unfortunately, the negotiations with the Lufthansa Group at both airlines have become so deadlocked that, in our view, we have no other option.
