Boeing wants to buy back supplier Spirit Aerosystems

A few years ago, Boeing outsourced the production of important components that are needed for the B737 Max series, among other things. This has apparently not proven to be the last resort. Now talks are underway about a possible purchase of Spirit Aerosystems. The production of some components was outsourced to the latter company a few years ago. Boeing hoped that the deal would not only bring cost benefits, but also a general increase in efficiency. However, the company has little significant influence on the non-group-owned company. This is now being changed, as talks are underway that should lead to the takeover of Spirit Aerosystems. If successful, Boeing would return the production of Max components in particular to its own control. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the plan. Boeing confirmed the report. When asked, a spokesperson said: "We believe that the reintegration of Boeing and Spirit AeroSystems' manufacturing operations would further increase aviation safety, improve quality and serve the interests of our customers, employees and shareholders." Spirit Aerosystems also confirmed that corresponding talks are underway with Boeing. Neither company wants to comment on the content. The US aircraft manufacturer is under pressure again. Following the recent B737 Max 9 incident, which occurred at Alaska Airlines in early January 2024, the FAA is taking a close look at the production processes and quality assurance. Numerous points of criticism have already been found. The manufacturer was temporarily prohibited from increasing the production rate of the Max series. So far, it has turned out that the quality defects that led to the latest incident originated at Spirit Aerosystems, but were

Verdi strike spontaneously extended to Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf

Without prior notice, the Verdi union has also called on security staff at Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports to stop work. Employees are to strike on March 7, 2024, from 3:30 a.m. to midnight. In contrast, industrial action was announced at Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main airports. At both locations, operators previously announced that no regular departures with local passengers could take place. In addition, there is the strike by Lufthansa ground staff, also organized by Verdi. Switching to the train is also difficult or even impossible, because the GDL has called on train drivers to strike. In Cologne/Bonn and Düsseldorf, people are angry about the actions of the Verdi union, because it did not announce the call for a strike at these two locations in advance. For example, Düsseldorf Airport explains that it believes this was done intentionally. It would affect passengers, because the airlines and tour operators were completely taken by surprise and had no opportunity to organize alternatives. There are many flight cancellations at both airports. Passengers are advised to contact their airline before travelling to the respective airport. Although attempts are being made to maintain security checks to a minimum in Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn, very long waiting times are to be expected. There is also no guarantee that these can be kept in operation at all times.

With 13,9 million passengers, there were 24 percent more travelers on board. Nevertheless, the level of the record year 2019 could not be reached. At that time, there were 14,7 million passengers. Emirates expects further delays in the Boeing 777X program

Emirates Airline is awaiting delivery of 170 Boeing 777-9s and 35 B777-8s. CEO Tim Clark assumes that the first unit will not be delivered before 2026. He suspects that the manufacturer will once again be unable to meet the schedule. The B777X program has been plagued by delays for some time. The reasons are varied. In any case, airlines such as Emirates are already eagerly awaiting this model, which is mainly intended for modernization and expansion. According to a report by Reuters News, Tim Clark does not expect the first unit to be delivered to the carrier he manages until the end of 2025, but rather in the course of 2026. Emirates Airline was the first major customer for the program and ordered the aircraft back in 2014. At that time, Boeing promised that the first unit would be able to be used commercially from 2020. So far, there have been several delays. Clark suspects that the strict checks carried out by the FAA following the recent B737 Max 9 incident, which occurred at Alaska Airlines in early January 2024, will have a further delaying effect on the schedule. In addition to Emirates Airline, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Air India and All Nippon Airways are also affected by the possible further postponement of the first delivery. There are also 31 orders in Boeing's backlog that are currently being managed anonymously. 43 orders for the B777-8 and 355 for the B777-9 have been identified by name.

Australia: Avia Solutions Group has bought into the turboprop carrier

The Avia Solutions Group now has a flight operation in Australia. To this end, it has taken over Skytrans. This is the twelfth carrier within the group that has its own certificates. Avia Solutions boss Jonas Janukenas explained: "This takeover is part of our comprehensive strategy, which aims to limit the effects of seasonality and at the same time give us access to new growth markets in the Asia-Pacific region and beyond." Up to now, Skytrans has been a regional airline that offers regional flights, charters and so-called FIFO services with small aircraft. It currently has five de Havilland Dash 8-100s, two Dash 8-300s and six Cessna 208B "Caravans". The Avia Solutions Group wants to equip the Australian carrier with larger aircraft. It has been announced that at least one Airbus A319 will be registered with the Australian AOC. The company also plans to enter the freight business with an Airbus A321P2F. This is not the only airline to be taken over by a European group. Just last year, Pionair was taken over by the Irish ASL Aviation Group. The former regional carrier now operates on the market as ASL Airlines Australia. Skytrans is now a special feature within the Avia Solutions Group: it is the only airline that operates scheduled flights on its own account. Furthermore, unlike its eleven sister companies, it has turboprop aircraft. It has been announced that this will remain the case. However, it has been added that this only applies as long as the regional flights are profitable.
