Barig heavily criticizes the GDL and Verdi strikes

The industry association Barig has strongly criticized the fact that the strikes called by the Verdi union at Frankfurt and Hamburg airports and among Lufthansa ground staff, as well as the work stoppages by train drivers called for by the GDL, are taking place during the ITB tourism trade fair. "The whole world wants to show its best side at the ITB International Tourism Fair taking place in Berlin, but the chaos caused by the unions has prevented Germany from doing so this year. The repeated strikes are not only damaging the economy, they are also causing an immense loss of image in terms of reliability and connectivity. The consequences are dramatic - for the many thousands of travelers during the ITB, for international trade in goods and, last but not least, for the airlines. This is significantly damaging Germany's hospitality and cosmopolitanism towards other countries. Instead of committedly connecting people from all over the world, mobility is being unnecessarily disrupted. The unions must return to the negotiating table for constructive dialogue in order to find sustainable solutions without repeatedly and disproportionately burdening passengers and supply chains,” said Michael Hoppe, Chairman and Executive Director of Barig.

Vietjet captain as midwife above the clouds

A pilot from the airline Vietjet had an unusual emergency mission on a flight from Taipei to Bangkok, because he became a midwife. A passenger gave birth on board. On February 23, 2024, the professional pilot was on duty as captain of Vietjet flight VZ565. Suddenly, the flight attendants raised the alarm that a female passenger needed urgent help because she had gone into labor. The pilot decided to hand over control of the aircraft to the first officer. Before leaving the cockpit, a flight attendant entered the flight deck - as required - so that the four-eyes principle was observed. The captain wanted to get a picture of the situation himself in order to be able to better decide whether an early stopover was necessary or not. In any case, he didn't have a chance to think about it anymore, because the child was in a particularly big hurry. So the Vietjet captain became a midwife. He has no special medical training, just the general first aid training that every pilot has to do regularly as part of his job. According to his own statements, the captain is himself a father of a child and that is one of the reasons why he was particularly proud that he was not only able to act as a helper during the birth, but that the newborn was born safely on board the aircraft he was commanding. The man has been a professional pilot for 18 years and posted on social media platforms that he had just helped a newborn baby "into the plane". The boy was given the nickname "Sky" by his mother.
