Brussels Airlines: pilots' strike immediately before Easter 2024

The latest negotiations between the representatives of Brussels Airlines pilots and the company management have not led to an agreement. Now the unions are calling on their members to strike from March 27 to 30, 2024. The previous date was March 23 to 27, 2024. However, this was initially cancelled because negotiations were being considered. Now the latest round of talks is said to have failed, which is why the union representatives are calling on KLM pilots to strike immediately before Easter 2024. Brussels Airlines says it regrets the decision of the employee representatives and at the same time apologizes in advance for any inconvenience that may be caused to passengers.

Greenwashing: KLM gets hit in court

The airline KLM has suffered a legal defeat. The citizens' platform "Fossielvrij NL" accused the carrier of so-called greenwashing and took the case to court. The court ruled that some advertising claims were misleading and therefore illegal. Specifically, according to the ruling, KLM had misled consumers in the past with environmental claims that were based on vague statements. In other communications, KLM paints an overly optimistic picture of the effects of measures such as sustainable aviation fuels and reforestation. These measures only slightly reduce the negative environmental aspects and falsely give the impression that flying with KLM is sustainable. According to KLM, the campaigns that ended up in court have since been completely discontinued. Therefore, the ruling would have no impact on the current advertising subjects.

Ufo: No agreement in sight with Lufthansa yet

No breakthrough has been achieved to date in the negotiations between Lufthansa, Lufthansa Cityline and the flight attendants' union Ufo. Employee representative Joachim Vazquez Bürger is not confident that an agreement will be reached before Easter 2024. He explained that there would still be disagreements regarding the duration and level of pay, among other things. This affects the collective bargaining negotiations for the flight attendants who fly for Cityline and Lufthansa. Just a few days ago, employee representatives virtually paralyzed the flight operations of the two carriers with a call for a strike. It is currently unclear whether there will be further work stoppages before Easter. Much will depend on how the negotiations progress.

Laxenburg: Ferry in new splendor

In Laxenburg in Lower Austria, a few kilometers from Vienna, there is one of the largest palace complexes in Austria. The associated Laxenburg Palace Park, in which Wien Holding also has a stake, is one of the most important garden monuments in Austria and Europe. Picturesque landscapes, wide meadows, mighty groups of trees and the huge palace pond create a unique composition. The ferry to Franzensburg is serviced every five to seven years. Today, March 21, 2024, it was lifted back into the palace pond in front of Franzensburg after a successful overhaul. "With the launch of the ferry after its return from the workshop, we are ringing in a new season with numerous highlights in Laxenburg Palace Park, from the guest performance by Circus Pikard to the Laxenburg Cultural Summer and the Klangwelle. The preservation of this beautiful facility is important to us, which is why we are investing in structural measures and in the desludging of the castle pond," said Wien Holding Managing Director Oliver Stribl, who was on site to see the complex process of lifting the ferry into the castle pond.

Romania and Bulgaria: Passport controls are only eliminated by air

Effective March 31, 2024, Bulgaria and Romania will be considered members of the Schengen area, but only by air. If you travel by car, train or bus, official passport controls will continue to take place. For air passengers, as of March 31, 2024, flights to/from Bulgaria and Romania will in future be handled in the Schengen areas of the airports. Police passport controls will then no longer be necessary. For the time being, this relief only applies to air travel, as official controls will continue to be carried out on land. The Austrian federal government under Karl Nehammer (ÖVP) has practically enforced this special regulation.

Danger of strike: KV negotiations at Austrian Airlines failed

According to the union Vida, negotiations on a new collective agreement for Austrian Airlines' flight crew have failed - at least for the time being. It is now no longer out of the question that a strike could be called immediately before the Easter holidays in 2024. The union described the latest offer made by Austrian Airlines through the Chamber of Commerce as "fictitious". They are demanding an "honest offer". Employee representatives are now discussing how to proceed. It may be possible to call for staff meetings again or to call for a strike. If there are work stoppages immediately before or even during the Easter holidays in 2024, this would be extremely painful for the self-proclaimed "home carrier", as booking figures are said to be very good. Given that the Lufthansa Group is prepared to accept strikes at other airlines, it cannot be ruled out that AUA's planes could soon be grounded and thousands of passengers could be temporarily stranded.

Tui Care Foundation plants trees in Peru

Over 40 percent of Peru is forested. However, ongoing deforestation is threatening important habitats and deteriorating the livelihoods of indigenous communities in particular. Tui Forest Peru aims to restore and protect native forests in the high Andes. The initiative empowers local communities in the Vilcanota mountain range near Cusco to plant native trees and develop new income opportunities. The Tui Care Foundation, together with the international non-governmental organization Global Forest Generation and the local organization Asociación Ecosistemas Andinas, will enable the planting of a total of 1,9 million trees. The focus is on Polylepis trees, which are adapted to extreme altitudes of 4.000 meters and more. The Polylepis forests play an essential role in supplying millions of people with water - both in the Andes and in towns and villages in the lowlands, where glacial meltwater is an important source of water. The forests are also a valuable habitat for numerous wild animals such as Andean condors, spectacled bears and pumas. To achieve the ambitious goals of the initiative, the indigenous communities in the region are establishing and maintaining at least 20 tree nurseries. The nurseries each have a full-time nursery technician and are run jointly with the high Andean communities - where many people take care of the growing seedlings. In total, over 800 hectares of forest will be restored. Tui Forest Peru will also repair 40 kilometers of nature trails, equip them with information boards and expand the infrastructure of the popular Vilcanota trek. The trek is visited by a growing number of vacationers every year and
