Lufthansa wants to exhibit historic aircraft in a new conference center

The Kranich Group is building a new conference and visitor center near the existing Lufthansa Aviation Center on the Frankfurt Airport site. The new building is part of a consolidation that has been ongoing at the Frankfurt site since 2020, which will reduce office and administrative space in various buildings by around 60.000 square meters by the end of this year. This corresponds to a reduction of 30 percent. In the immediate vicinity of the Lufthansa Aviation Center (LAC), the Lufthansa Group has started building a new conference and visitor center at Frankfurt Airport. Two restored Lufthansa aircraft will be on permanent display as the main historical attraction: the Junkers Ju 52 - also known as Tante Ju - and for the first time the legendary Lockheed Super Star with the registration D-ALAN, which is currently being restored at Lufthansa Technik in Hamburg. Both aircraft will be visible from afar from the outside thanks to a large transparent facade. The bright building in the style of an aircraft hangar will not only provide conference and visitor rooms but also space for events with a total of more than 1.000 guests. In an open gallery, visitors can explore exhibits from the company's history, some of which will be accessible to the public for the first time. Like the group's training and conference hotel "Lufthansa Seeheim", the Frankfurt conference and visitor center will also be open for external events and offer visitors gastronomic options in a coffee lounge. The building was designed by the Frankfurt architect team from AS+P Albert Speer + Partner. The new building is 72 meters wide, 17,5 meters high and 53 meters deep. The floor space totals around

Munich: Topping-out ceremony for new airport hotel

Munich Airport is currently building a new hotel building on the site, which will in future be operated by a tenant as "Ibis Styles Munich Airport". In the meantime, the so-called topping-out ceremony has been celebrated. The opening of the ibis Styles Hotel is planned for summer 2025. At peak times, around 120 construction workers will be working on the construction site at the same time. Almost 600 tons of structural steel were used in the shell construction. The use of rock wool instead of rigid foam in the thermal insulation composite system, a green roof, geothermal energy for cooling and the connection to district heating via renewable energy sources will make a significant contribution to reducing the building's CO2 emissions. The hotel will therefore receive gold certification from the German Sustainable Building Council. This means that the building fits particularly well into FMG's sustainability strategy. The focal point of the 350-room hotel will be the open lobby. This offers a restaurant, a bar and a separate breakfast area, as well as space for co-working. A children's area and a self-service food market are also planned. The ibis Styles brand stands for creative, individual and affordable hotels, with each of the approximately 670 hotels worldwide telling its own design story. In addition to the hotel's own parking spaces, the hotel at Munich Airport will also be connected to public transport, which, for example, offers a bus service to the terminals every ten minutes.

Cologne/Bonn Airport: Runways get new designators

Cologne Bonn Airport is giving two of its three runways new names after more than 60 years. The name of the crosswind runway 06/24 will remain the same. From Thursday, April 18, 2024, the large runway will be called 13L/31R and the small runway 13R/31L. The large intercontinental runway has had its name since 1961, and the small parallel runway has had its name even longer. "The names of the runways in international air traffic are based on the compass rose. The number indicates the angle of the runway in relation to the geomagnetic north pole," explains Markus Moi, Head of Flight Operations at Cologne Bonn Airport, who is coordinating the renaming. Since the Earth's magnetic field is in motion, the north pole shifts by several kilometers every year. "This leads to minimal deviations in the decimal place, which are tolerated. However, if the deviation is too large, the German air traffic control will specify a name change," explains Moi. The crosswind runway, which was called 1954/07 when it opened in 25, was therefore renamed 2006/06 in 24. The renaming does not result in any changes to the approach and departure routes. They remain identical. The replacement of signs and markings has started in good time. Both runways will be flown to under their current names 14L/32R and 14R/32L until the deadline. The civil engineering, flight operations, airport training center, geodata/documentation, safety & compliance and electrical engineering departments are involved in the complex project of renaming during ongoing operations. An important partner is the German Air Traffic Control (DFS). Many processes at the airport are being adapted as part of the renaming. The technology of the instrument landing system must be recalibrated. IT systems and meteorological systems require updates. The AIP, the Aerodrome Manual and

AUA-KV: Ofner severely criticizes the Vida vote

Vienna Airport Director Günther Ofner, in his role as WKO trade group chairman, is once again ranting against the Vida union. He describes it as a "farce" that only union members are allowed to take part in the vote on the AUA collective agreement. Among other things, Ofner claims that only a "small minority" of Austrian Airlines' flying employees are members of the Vida union. This would mean that the "vast majority" would not be able to take part in the vote at all. Vienna Airport Director, in his role as WKO trade group chairman, also criticizes the cover letter for being "manipulative" and the voting period being too short. "Apparently only Vida members, and therefore only a small minority overall, are allowed to decide on the future of their jobs; everyone else is not even asked. The fact that the AUA on-board works council is taking part in such a deception is beyond irresponsible, as it is supposed to represent the interests of all on-board employees. The text sent out by the union for the voting process is also grossly manipulative and lacks any objectivity," criticizes Ofner. "In the end, the vote will not only have consequences for the Vida members, but for everyone. When it comes to strikes, however, the Vida union does not differentiate, but takes both the GPA union members and many non-members in the AUA hostage. Many Vida members in other companies, such as the airport and many service companies, are also affected. In the end, Vida harms thousands of its own members and drags others along with it! That is irresponsible."

IAG wants to give up 40 percent of Air Europa slots

The EU Commission has signaled that it has serious concerns about the planned takeover of Air Europa by the International Airlines Group and of Ita Airways by Lufthansa and that extensive concessions may be necessary. Now IAG boss Luis Gallego is suggesting that 40 percent of Air Europa slots could be given up. It recently leaked out from Brussels that the competition watchdog is dissatisfied with the concessions offered so far by IAG and Globalia. They do not go far enough. Now IAG boss Luis Gallego is going into an interview with the newspaper "El País" and is suggesting that around 40 percent of Air Europa's take-off and landing rights could be given to competitors. There are already said to be interested parties for these, as Ryanair, Volotea and Plus Ultra are said to be in the starting blocks. However, it is unclear how the division between short- and long-haul routes could be distributed in terms of the take-off and landing rights. Nothing has been decided yet, because IAG must first convince the EU Commission that the measures will actually lead to Air Europa or Iberia no longer having monopoly routes on the Spanish market. At the end of April 2024, the competition authorities will send a letter to IAG. This will then set out exactly which concerns that need to be addressed could lead to a ban on the takeover. A decision is then to be made by July 15, 2024. It is not yet clear whether concessions will be sufficient, whether official requirements will be imposed or whether the deal will be canceled.

Long-haul: Lufthansa is revising its catering concept

In Business Class, Lufthansa wants to offer its passengers on long-haul flights a revised catering concept. This will now also include additional snacks. Among other things, passengers can now also receive bread created for Lufthansa by Axel Schmitt during flights. This will be served as a starter together with butter and olive oil. A different type of bread will be served every quarter. Before take-off, passengers will in future be given an Avionic aperitif as an alternative to water and/or sparkling wine. Nuts will also be served. For the first time, Business Class guests will be served a vegetarian greeting from the kitchen as a prelude to the first service on board, from antipasti to sushi. The dessert selection will also be supplemented with fresh fruit. For those a little peckish in between meals, there is a new, modular snack selection that varies depending on the length of the route and the time of day. This includes snacks, fresh fruit and, on longer flights, fresh salty and sweet treats such as tomato and mozzarella skewers or wraps with pastrami. As of June, every passenger will be given a small box of Lindt chocolates in the exclusive Lufthansa design as a farewell gift. Lufthansa Business Class wants to offer guests an all-round excellent service, from the moment of welcome to the farewell gesture.

Scoot is looking forward to the first E190-E2 flight

The low-cost airline Scoot will soon be flying regional jets for the first time in the company's history. Last week the first Embraer E190-E2 was taken delivery of from the factory. This is of particular importance for the Brazilian aircraft manufacturer as Scoot is the first airline from Singapore to be an E2 customer. It is therefore not surprising that the handover of the first unit was turned into a real ceremony. The low-cost airline, which is a subsidiary of Singapore Airlines, did not order the Embraer 190-E2 aircraft directly from Embraer, but is purchasing them through the leasing company Azorra. The regional jet that has now been delivered is called the "Explorer 3.0". "We are honoured to be the first airline in Singapore to receive this modern and fuel-efficient aircraft, and the E190-E2 jets are crucial to our entire network growth strategy. The delivery of the first Embraer E190-E2 reflects our confidence in the demand for air travel and our commitment to connecting our customers to more destinations at the same low price. We thank Azorra and Embraer for their support in this next chapter, in which we become the first major operator of the E2 in Southeast Asia," said Leslie Thng, CEO of Scoot. The low-cost carrier plans to add three more E190-E2s to its fleet this year. A further four will follow next year. The company wants to use the regional jets to open up new routes for which the existing Airbus A320 and Boeing 787 aircraft would not be suitable due to their excessive capacity. The first Scoot E190-E2 is scheduled to arrive in May 2024.
