Stuttgart Airport: Trial operation for shortened departure procedures ended

After a one-year trial operation for a shortened departure procedure on the TEDGO flight route in an easterly operating direction for departures to the south, Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH (FSG) has announced the results of the trial. The trial operation was carried out from February 2023 and met with intensive discussions in advance, especially in the communities over which it was flown. The FSG accompanied the trial operation with noise measurements in order to obtain reliable data for a well-founded assessment. The recommendation of the Aircraft Noise Commission regarding the continuation or termination of the new variant is imminent. The FSG will remain neutral in the vote. Ulrich Heppe, spokesman for the management of Flughafen Stuttgart GmbH, emphasized the importance of transparency and good neighborliness. The trial operation was communicated to the communities affected at an early stage and the measurement results obtained were discussed. The airport operation itself is not affected by the route. The FSG, as the operator of the airport infrastructure on the ground, remains neutral and will abstain from voting on this issue. The Aircraft Noise Commission makes recommendations for changing flight routes. However, the final decision on whether to regularly start or continue operating new routes lies with the German Air Traffic Control (DFS) and the Federal Supervisory Office for Air Traffic Control (BAF).

FH-Joanneum students successful in the USA

The aviation students at FH Joanneum in Graz achieved impressive success in the Design-Build-Fly competition of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) in the USA. With their self-developed model aircraft called "Bergfink", they came in fifth place, making them the best international team in the competition. This was joanneum Aeronautics' tenth appearance in this prestigious international competition. This year's theme of the DBF competition challenged the participants to design an aircraft that can function both as a city taxi for passengers and as a medical transporter, and also has the ability to halve its wingspan in the parking position. With their carbon competition aircraft "Bergfink", the FH Joanneum team convinced the jury and came in fifth place out of a total of 107 participating teams. Even adverse weather conditions on the third day of the competition could not stop the team. "Despite particularly windy weather conditions on the third day, our pilot Samuel mastered the challenges with flying colors," reports Karoline Zeininger, a team member from joanneum Aeronautics in the USA. She also emphasized that the knowledge acquired during her aviation studies was successfully put into practice. The AIAA DBF competition takes place annually, and the joanneum Aeronautics team has taken part every year since it was founded in the 2014/15 season.
