With the aim of strengthening air connections, the airport plans to launch flights to Istanbul, Copenhagen, Malmö and Hamburg, which, according to General Director Natalija Trivić, have sufficient demand. After a record year in 2023, when the airport recorded 460.720 passengers, the start of the new year saw a 31,2% decline from January to April 2024. This decline results from the reduction of flights by low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Wizz Air. Nevertheless, the airport plans to offset the decline by offering summer charter flights to Monastir, Hurghada and Athens. Natalija Trivić expects the airport to handle around 2028 passengers annually by 600.000. It highlights the direct economic impact and calls for financial support from the Government of Republika Srpska and local communities to improve the positioning of the airport.

Indian court orders return of aircraft and engines to TWC Aviation Capital

An Indian court has ruled that SpiceJet must return two aircraft and three engines to lessor TWC Aviation Capital by the end of May. US-based TWC had previously successfully filed a case against the airline in UK courts and then approached the Indian courts to enforce the judgment. The Delhi High Court's May 22 ruling demands the return of the aircraft and engines, along with all relevant records of their technical condition, by the end of May. The airline had arrears of $14 million with TWC, following which the lessor rejected an offer to catch up on payments. SpiceJet had previously tried to challenge the UK High Court's ruling in India, but the Delhi High Court has now ruled in TWC's favour. The court criticised SpiceJet for removing the engines from the allocated aircraft and using them in other planes, contrary to the lease terms. Returning the aircraft and engines poses a logistical challenge for SpiceJet as they are not all located in Delhi and inspections and coordination are required.

FlyArna begins liquidation proceedings – Government approves dissolution of ANIF

According to reports by local investigative news site Hetq, FlyArna, a subsidiary of FlyArmenia, has reportedly begun liquidation proceedings and notified its employees via email. The government also approved the dissolution of the Armenian National Interests Fund (ANIF), a 49% shareholder in the airline. The airline has apparently terminated all remaining employment contracts and is said to have failed to pay salaries for April and May 2024, although this would still be legally mandatory. ANIF plans to appoint a director for FlyArna to facilitate payments, although the sovereign wealth fund itself will soon be dissolved. Armenia's online company registry does not yet contain any information on FlyArna's liquidation. The airline had returned its two A2024-320s to Air Arabia Group since mid-January 200 and its air operator certificate (AOC) was suspended in March. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan acknowledged in March that FlyArna had failed as a project and announced plans to liquidate the company. The airline was one of two foreign joint ventures of the Air Arabia Group, alongside Pakistan's Fly Jinnah.

Pilot has to ditch in the North Sea - fishing cutter saves man and machine

On Sunday, a pilot had to make an emergency landing with his small plane on the North Sea off Büsum due to engine failure. Fortunately, a nearby fishing boat was immediately on the scene and was able to rescue the pilot and his plane. The crew of the boat pulled the double-decker plane out of the water and brought it safely to shore. The pilot was unharmed. According to a spokesperson for the German Maritime Rescue Association (DGzRS), the boat crew acted quickly and rescued the pilot before the sea rescue cruiser "Theodor Storm" reached the scene of the accident. It is suspected that the pilot deliberately made an emergency landing near the boat in order to receive help more quickly. The emergency landing and the subsequent rescue by the fishing boat illustrate the importance of rapid response and excellent cooperation at sea.

Wizz Air receives compensation for engine problems and expects further deliveries

Wizz Air Holdings has announced in its annual report that it has received "significant compensation" from Pratt & Whitney for engine problems, but also warned of a further increase in grounded aircraft. Wizz Air's parent company booked net proceeds of €198,6 million from credits and compensation in the last financial year, which also includes the settlement with Pratt & Whitney. The average engine downtime is now 300 days, but the delivery of new spare engines is expected to shorten the waiting time. To mitigate the impact of the engine problems, Wizz Air has increased capacity through wet leases and improved the efficiency of its A320neo and A321neo fleet, extended leases and planned the introduction of new aircraft. Nevertheless, 47 of Wizz Air's A320-200N and A321-200NX aircraft remain grounded, and by the end of September this number is expected to rise to around 50. The airline does not plan to expand capacity for the 2025 financial year for now and will maintain the same level as last year.
