Hand luggage fees: Four low-costers receive fines in Spain
Spain's Consumer Affairs Ministry has taken a drastic measure, fining four major airlines - Ryanair, Vueling, EasyJet and Volotea - a total of €150 million. This comes following complaints from consumer associations such as Facua, which have taken action against the airlines' practice of charging for hand luggage. The fines also target other practices deemed abusive, including charging for seat reservations next to minors and family members, opaque pricing, as well as refusing to accept cash payments for additional services at airports. While the airlines are taking legal action against the decision, the president of the Association of Airlines, Javier Gándara, argues that the fines are disproportionate and could force up to 50 million passengers to use unnecessary services. He also claims that the decision is contrary to European rules on setting air fares. Facua, on the other hand, supports the fines and expressly encourages consumers to request a refund of these fees in order to stand up for their rights.
