Lufthansa: Ita takeover faces major hurdle

Lufthansa's planned takeover of Ita Airways faces a significant hurdle as the European Commission continues to raise concerns about the impact on competition on the transatlantic flight market. This development could have far-reaching consequences for the European aviation industry. In November 2023, Lufthansa officially announced its intention to acquire 41% of the Italian airline ITA Airways, with the long-term goal of taking full control of the airline. This acquisition should enable both companies to strengthen their market position and benefit from shared synergies. In particular, ITA Airways should benefit from an expanded network infrastructure and lucrative route combinations between Europe and North America through its integration into the Lufthansa Group's "Atlantic Joint Venture" (A++). European Commission concerns The European Commission has expressed concerns about the impact of this merger on competition since the beginning of the negotiations. The transatlantic market in particular is in focus, as A++ already controls 80% of the market. The Commission is concerned that the inclusion of ITA Airways in this joint venture could lead to market dominance that would significantly limit competition and increase prices for consumers. The European aviation market is increasingly dominated by low-cost carriers such as Ryanair and easyJet. This dominance in short-haul traffic forces traditional full-service airlines such as Lufthansa and ITA Airways to focus their business on long-haul flights in order to remain financially viable. The transatlantic routes are therefore of strategic importance as they represent an important source of revenue. Compromise proposals and reactions To address the Commission's concerns, Lufthansa and the Italian Ministry of Finance have put forward proposals to merge ITA's transatlantic operations with other airlines.

Homemade brand: Iran wants to get decommissioned MD-80s into the air

In the face of long-standing economic sanctions, Iran has achieved a remarkable engineering feat: the local production of turbine blades for McDonnell Douglas aircraft. This development marks a significant step towards bringing the idle fleet back into service and represents a strategic response to economic challenges. However, international recognition of the "homemade brand" is virtually nonexistent. For decades, Iran has faced comprehensive economic sanctions that severely restrict access to necessary spare parts for its Western-made aircraft. The country's approximately 40 McDonnell Douglas aircraft have been particularly affected, with 28 of them grounded due to a lack of affordable spare parts. The high cost of imported turbine blades has forced the country's airlines to find creative solutions, including cannibalizing aircraft. Now MAPNA AERO, a subsidiary of the Iran Power Plant Projects Management Company (MAPNA) Group, has achieved a technological breakthrough. Scientists at the company have successfully reverse engineered turbine blades for the JT8D engine. According to Mani Rezvani, the managing director of MAPNA AERO, the prototype was manufactured and tested about two months ago. The first McDonnell Douglas aircraft equipped with the Iranian-made blades is scheduled to enter service on June 20, 2024. Cost savings and production plans Manufacturing the turbine blades locally costs about a third of the cost of imported parts. While purchasing them abroad costs around $22.000 per blade, the cost of manufacturing them in Iran is about $8.000. Although the parts have not yet received formal certification from the Iranian Civil Aviation Authority, that approval is expected soon. This would pave the way for
