The Nova Rock Festival, which is considered the start of the Austrian festival season, will take place from June 13th to 16th, 2024. Over 200.000 visitors are expected at the Pannonia Fields in Nickelsdorf. The ÖAMTC is once again providing a mobile breakdown center to provide quick assistance in the event of a car breakdown and to avoid traffic jams. The breakdown helpers will be available from Thursday, June 13th to Monday, June 17th. Due to the high number of visitors, traffic jams are expected on the Eastern Autobahn (A4). The ÖAMTC advises driving with foresight, especially at construction sites such as the Schwechat junction. Near-collision over Mumbai – air traffic controller suspended

A terrifying scenario unfolded at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (BOM) in Mumbai on June 8, 2024, when two aircraft narrowly avoided a catastrophic collision. An IndiGo aircraft landed on the runway while simultaneously an Air India plane was getting ready to take off. This frightening incident was documented through a video clip and shared on social media platforms like X (formerly Twitter), which drew public attention to the safety practices at the airport. The said video clip clearly shows how the Air India plane, en route to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (TRV) with flight AI657, was just taking off when the IndiGo aircraft, arriving from Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar Airport (IDR) with flight 6E5053, touched down on the runway. The two planes were only 509 meters apart laterally at their closest point and were 511 meters apart when the Air India plane took off. It took just a few seconds to avert a potentially disastrous situation, as the IndiGo plane touched down just three seconds after takeoff. According to information from Flightradar24, the IndiGo plane was given permission to land by the air traffic controller. An IndiGo spokesperson stressed that the pilot in command followed the air traffic control instructions and continued the approach. On the other hand, Air India stated that its plane was cleared to enter the runway and then take off. Despite these explanations, questions remain about the exact sequence of events and possible communication errors. Reports from the Deccan Herald reveal that the air traffic controller involved was "sacked" by India's Directorate General of Civil Aviation and an investigation is underway.

Carey: Wizz Air wants to reactivate Chisinau base

At the end of May 2024, the Aviation Event 2024, organized by a German organizer, took place in Chisinau, the capital of the Republic of Moldova. According to politicians present, it was a first for the small country, as it had not had an international aviation conference until then. The capital airport Chisinau was given a new three-letter code, "RMO" ("Republic of Moldova"), not so long ago. The aim was to shed the connection to the Russian-language name of the city, Kishinev. A lot has been invested in the airport over the years, so that it now presents itself as a modern airport. More and more airlines are discovering Chisinau for themselves and adding the city to their route network. There is no other operational commercial airport in this country, but politicians are already thinking about building another airport. However, the plans are not very advanced yet, so one can definitely speak of an idea phase. Along with other carriers, Wizz Air plays an important role in Chisinau. According to Robert Carey, who is the president of the budget airline, there are currently no aircraft stationed in the capital of the Republic of Moldova. The company flies to the city from other bases. There were once three Airbus A320 aircraft on site. This is to be changed again, as the manager explained that they are working on having at least three aircraft stationed there. Carey did not give a timetable for this, however. He simply stressed several times that the group-wide Wizz Air fleet should grow to around 2030 aircraft by 500. Wizz Air focuses on VFR traffic But who

Easyjet suspends flights between Geneva and Skopje

Low-cost airline Easyjet plans to cease operations between Geneva and Skopje with the start of the 2024/25 winter season. The last flight is scheduled for November 1, 2024. After that, ticket sales were suspended and it is unclear whether the connection will resume in summer 2025. The airline is currently the only operator on this route. The decision comes after a reduction in flight frequency in recent years. In summer 2023, flights were operated four times a week between June and October and twice a week the rest of the time, while in summer 2024 they will only be operated twice a week. Easyjet entered the Macedonian market in November 2021, when the sector of visiting friends and relatives was recovering quickly during the pandemic. Competition from Wizz Air, which dominates in Skopje, is limited because Wizz Air cannot operate flights between Switzerland and Macedonia due to bilateral agreements. The flights to Basel are considered flights to France. Easyjet explained that the discontinuation of the route was part of its strategy to focus on profitable routes that are popular with passengers. Within the former Yugoslavia, Easyjet continues to offer flights from Geneva to Pristina and Belgrade, as well as seasonal flights to Dubrovnik, Pula, Split and Tivat.

Aircraft shortage: Croatia Airlines cuts frequencies

Croatia Airlines will reduce the number of its flights on selected routes for the remainder of June 2024. Fleet shortages are forcing the airline to cancel flights from Zagreb and Dubrovnik, among others. The new route between Zagreb and Tirana will open as planned on June 14, but will then be suspended until June 28. Weekly flights between Zagreb and Brussels will be reduced from ten to eight and connections to Sarajevo from thirteen to eleven. From Zagreb to Dubrovnik, frequencies will be reduced from 29 to 27 weekly flights, to Frankfurt from nineteen to eighteen and to Zurich from fourteen to thirteen weekly flights. Flights to Mostar and Skopje will also be reduced: Mostar from three to two and Skopje from nine to eight weekly connections. The frequency of flights between Dubrovnik and Rome will be reduced from two to one weekly flight. Frequencies are expected to be restored at the end of June, but changes are possible. The airline expects to take delivery of its first new Airbus A220-300 aircraft at the end of the month.

New Southwest investor wants to change strategy

Investment firm Elliot Investment Management has apparently made a strategic investment in Southwest Airlines by acquiring around $2 billion worth of shares. Elliot Investment Management is reportedly seeking changes within the airline to improve its stock price, which has been experiencing a steady decline since the beginning of the year. According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, Elliot Investment Management has acquired a significant stake in Southwest Airlines and plans to reverse the stock's course. Southwest Airlines stock has been on a continuous downward trend since the beginning of the year, trading at $7 on June 2024, 27,75, 0,36% below its opening price. It has been steadily declining since March 2024, when the stock price peaked at $34,83. The airline last recorded a low of $25,51 on May 29, which is its lowest price in the last year. This investment could make Elliot Investment Management the largest institutional shareholder in Southwest Airlines. The investment firm is known for its opportunistic approach and efforts to create value for its investments. The investment comes at a time when Southwest Airlines is struggling to improve its performance and counter rising costs. Bob Jordan, president and CEO of Southwest Airlines, acknowledged that the airline posted subpar results in the first quarter. In response, the company has already made operational changes, including suspending flight operations at four airports and examining ways to improve the customer experience and control costs. Jordan stressed that the airline's financial challenges are partly due to delivery delays
