IAG offers EU Commission further proposals for takeover of Air Europa

The International Airlines Group (IAG) has submitted new proposals to the EU Commission to take over the Spanish airline Air Europa in order to strengthen competition. According to a report in the Spanish newspaper "El Pais", IAG is prepared to sell 52 percent of Air Europa's frequencies from last year to competitors. This measure is intended to ensure that there are several competitors on all routes and thus various options for travelers. Iberia, a subsidiary of IAG, plans to create synergies and combine route overlaps when taking over Air Europa. The negotiations with the EU competition authorities are described as a constructive dialogue. The EU Commission is expected to decide on how to proceed by August 20th, after the deadline was recently extended because previous concessions were deemed insufficient. Previously, IAG was prepared to sell up to 40 percent of Air Europa's frequencies from 2023 to competitors. Now IAG is aiming to acquire 80 percent of Air Europa from the Spanish company Globalia. An earlier agreement from 2021 was abandoned after EU regulators deemed the remedies insufficient.

SAS re-plans network strategy with Skyteam alliance

Scandinavian airline SAS Scandinavian Airlines plans to rethink its long-haul network strategy after joining the Skyteam alliance. This was announced by CEO Anko van der Werff to “CH-Aviation”. The Airbus A321neo is expected to play a key role in this. Currently, SAS operates long-haul flights mainly from Copenhagen. However, joining the Skyteam alliance on September 1st could add more routes from decentralized hubs and airports in Scandinavia. Van der Werff explained that in addition to existing connections from Oslo-Gardermoen and Stockholm-Arlanda to New York-Newark, other destinations are also possible, especially after establishing a partnership with Delta Air Lines. The A321neo, originally intended for transatlantic routes from airports such as Gothenburg, is currently mainly used from Copenhagen. These jets fly several times a week to New York-JFK and to Toronto from Copenhagen and Stockholm. Since June 17th, SAS has also served the Delta hub in Atlanta. Van der Werff highlighted the peculiarities of the Scandinavian market with high incomes but a dispersed population, which makes network planning particularly challenging.

DLR tests drone use for offshore wind farms at Cochstedt Airport

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has set up a special geozone at Cochstedt Airport to test the use of drones in offshore wind farms. Since June, drones with a take-off mass of up to 800 kilograms have been allowed to fly there without the need for special permission, as long as they comply with certain safety standards. The geozone allows drone flights outside of the field of view, which is crucial for logistics in offshore wind farms. On June 19 and 20, the "Offshore Drone Challenge" took place, where various manufacturers presented their technologies for drone delivery to offshore wind farms. The "Sora" process is used to ensure minimal operational risk. In the long term, the DLR plans to use the geozone permanently to further advance the development and use of drone technologies. The test site in Cochstedt is used both for research and for practical testing of new technologies in the field of drone logistics.

Progress in the redesign of Berlin Tegel Airport

The Berlin Senate is pushing ahead with plans for the development of the former Tegel airport site in the northwest of the city. Several thousand refugees are currently housed on the airport site. These accommodations are expected to be used until the end of 2025. However, the Urban Tech Republic area will not be affected by this, says Gaebler. In addition to the UTR, the Senate is planning the Kurt Schumacher Quarter, a new urban district on the former airport site. A draft development plan for this is to be completed soon and submitted to the Senate. The first construction work is expected in 2026.
