SpiceJet under pressure: Financial turbulence reaches Dubai

SpiceJet, one of India's leading low-cost airlines, is in deep financial trouble. On July 31, 2024, the crisis reached a new peak when the Dubai Airports Company prevented several of the airline's flights due to "payment issues." About ten flights were reportedly cancelled that day, leaving hundreds of passengers stranded. Schedule data from ch-aviation showed that SpiceJet had flights to Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Jaipur, Kochi International, Kozhikode, Madurai and Pune, as well as two flights to Mumbai International and Delhi International, that day. These flights were all cancelled, causing considerable chaos and inconvenience to the affected passengers. In a statement, SpiceJet attempted to defuse the situation, saying that the flights were cancelled due to "operational reasons." The airline stressed that operations to and from Dubai are now back to normal. However, neither SpiceJet nor the Dubai Airports Company responded to requests for further details. The problems in Dubai are just the tip of the iceberg for SpiceJet. The airline has repeatedly made headlines over the past few years with financial difficulties. Recent allegations include that the airline has not paid contributions to the employee welfare fund for over two and a half years. In addition, seven companies, mainly aircraft frame and engine lessors, have filed insolvency petitions against SpiceJet in the National Company Law Tribunal. Another seven companies have active claims pending in the Delhi High Court, with some companies filing more than one case. Raising capital and financial stabilisation In an attempt to stabilise its financial situation, SpiceJet has

Travel and Taylor Swift concerts lead to traffic disruptions in Austria

The ARBÖ is also expecting heavy travel traffic on Austria's roads this weekend, despite the lack of traffic-intensive events - with the exception of the Taylor Swift concerts. Increased traffic volumes are expected, especially on Saturday. The main traffic jams include the Westautobahn (A1) near Salzburg, the Innkreisautobahn (A8) in the construction site area between Ried and Ort, and the Tauernautobahn (A10) before the Katschberg tunnel. Further bottlenecks are expected on the Karawankenautobahn (A11) before the Karawankentunnel, the Inntalautobahn (A12) before Kufstein, and the Brennerautobahn (A13) between Innsbruck and Schönberg. At the same time, Taylor Swift is ensuring a sold-out Ernst Happel Stadium in Vienna for three days. From August 8 to 10, the American singer will perform as part of her "The Eras Tour," which will lead to heavy traffic, particularly on the Südosttangente (A23) and the Ostautobahn (A4). The ARBÖ advises visitors to use public transport to avoid traffic jams and parking problems.

Go First: The fight for survival ends with the decision to liquidate

In a dramatic turn of events, the Committee of Creditors (CoC) of Indian airline Go First (GOW, Mumbai International) has decided to liquidate the insolvent airline. The petition for liquidation is to be filed with the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), a special bankruptcy court, on August 5. This decision came after the purchase offers received did not meet expectations. The CoC's decision marks the end of a turbulent period for Go First, which ceased operations in May 2023. The airline was facing significant financial problems at the time, exacerbated by technical difficulties with Pratt & Whitney engines. These problems resulted in a large part of the fleet being grounded, further worsening the already precarious financial situation. Futile sales efforts A sales strategy was initiated in early 2024, which resulted in two formal offers: one from a consortium comprising Ajay Singh, promoter of SpiceJet (SG, Delhi International), and Nishat Pitti of EaseMyTrip, and another from Sharjah-based Sky One. After the CoC raised concerns about the structure and upfront costs of the offers, Singh and Pitti's consortium withdrew its offer in May. This came after a Delhi High Court ruling that allowed lessors to deregister and export their aircraft leased to Go First, leaving Sky One as the only potential buyer. Go First's financial situation is disastrous. The airline's administrator accepted creditor claims totaling Rs 65,21 billion ($780 million). The largest creditors include

Record fine for Booking.com in Spain for abuse of market power

The Spanish antitrust authority CNMC has imposed a record fine of 413 million euros on Booking.com. The company is accused of abusing its dominant market position. Specifically, unfair terms and conditions are said to have been imposed on hotels in Spain and competition with other booking portals has been restricted. In addition, Booking.com's bonus programs are said to be lacking in transparency. The Hungarian competition authority had already imposed a fine on the company last month. Markus Gratzer, Secretary General of the Austrian Hotel Association (ÖHV), expressed understanding for the allegations and emphasized that many hotels in Austria also suffer from Booking.com's conditions. With a market share of around 75%, the platform is very dominant in Austria. Gratzer calls for more transparency and fair treatment of hotel businesses. The EU Commission has named Booking.com as a gatekeeper for its online brokerage service under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). This should enable comprehensive investigations and regulations. The ÖHV has been relying on direct bookings for years and trains companies in direct sales. According to Gratzer, 67% of bookings at ÖHV hotels are now made via direct channels such as email or the hotel's own website. This is beneficial for both sides, as guests can find the best offer at the best price.
