Floods in Lower Austria: Federal Army in constant operation

In recent days, Lower Austria has been hit by one of the worst floods in recent years. Streets were flooded, houses were under water, and numerous people had to be evacuated from the affected areas. In these difficult times, the strength of the Austrian community is evident, not least through the deployment of over 1.100 soldiers from the Federal Army. Supported by 140 pioneers from Salzburg and a further 100 militia soldiers from Styria, who are now moving in, the military is working intensively to repair the damage and prevent further disasters. In a statement, Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner emphasized the importance of solidarity and the tireless help of the soldiers and volunteers who are facing the enormous challenges. Areas of operation: Tullnerfeld, Pielachtal and Waldviertel The regions of Tullnerfeld, Pielachtal and Waldviertel are particularly badly affected. The Federal Army's cleanup and rescue work is concentrated here. The soldiers are entrusted with a wide range of tasks, including evacuating people from endangered areas, securing dams and clearing rubble and mud. So far, three lives have been saved, including a dog that got lost in the water. Over 50 people were rescued from hard-to-reach areas using winch rescue, while countless others were brought to safety using boats. Sandbags and dams: logistics at the highest level A key element in the fight against the flood was the use of so-called "big bags" - large sandbags that were used to stabilize the dams. The soldiers have so far transported 670 of these big bags by helicopter, which have a total weight of over

TUI Airline relies on digital technical logbook from Aviatar

TUI Airline has decided to introduce the digital Technical Logbook (eTLB) from Aviatar, Lufthansa Technik's platform, for its entire fleet of around 130 aircraft. This step replaces the previous paper-based process for recording technical issues. The use of the eTLB enables more efficient and precise documentation through pre-defined text blocks and automated input masks, which increases data quality and transparency. The introduction of the eTLB is part of TUI's ongoing efforts to modernize its engineering and maintenance organization. The platform will improve collaboration between pilots and maintenance teams and is a significant part of Lufthansa Technik's Digital Tech Ops Ecosystem, which also includes the AMOS and flydocs solutions. Niklas Kropp, Head of Business Development & Fleet Performance at TUI Airline, praised the partnership with Aviatar and emphasized the importance of the project for optimizing the fleet and maintenance processes. Frank Martens, Head of Sales & Key Account Digital Fleet Services at Lufthansa Technik, highlighted the close and productive collaboration that has led to an agile and effective project setup. TUI Airline plans to initially introduce the eTLB at its British subsidiary, and approvals from various European aviation authorities are already in progress.

Safety culture in focus: Düsseldorf Airport hosts FOD Walk

Düsseldorf Airport, one of Germany's most important international transport hubs, sent a strong signal of safety awareness and community spirit last Friday. Over 250 participants from various areas of the aviation industry took part in this year's FOD Walk to check the runway for foreign objects and thus increase the level of safety at the airport. The event not only offered an opportunity for practical safety checks, but also to strengthen cohesion between employees and partners. Düsseldorf Airport is known for its consistent safety culture, which is promoted both through regular training and innovative campaigns. The FOD Walk campaign, during which the northern runway was thoroughly searched over a length of around 2.700 meters and a width of 45 meters, is an example of these efforts. The term "FOD" stands for Foreign Object Debris - loose objects lying on the runways that can cause significant damage to aircraft. The systematic inspection of these areas is therefore of utmost importance in order to identify and eliminate potential hazards at an early stage. The event was opened by Dr. Henning Pfisterer, Head of the Aviation Department at Düsseldorf Airport. He emphasized: "With the FOD Walk and our regular information campaigns, we are underlining our commitment to the highest safety standards. At the same time, we are strengthening the sense of community between employees and partners. This close cooperation is crucial for safe and smooth operations." The broad participation, especially from partners in ground handling, is particularly noteworthy, as it is further evidence of the strong cooperative spirit on the airport premises. A high-profile FOD symposium was held prior to the FOD Walk.

Austrian Airlines is increasingly focusing on wet leasing: A look at the current strategy

Austrian Airlines (AUA), the national airline of Austria and part of the Lufthansa Group, is stepping up its efforts to meet demand in the summer season by using wet-lease aircraft. This is the most extensive use of wet-lease in the airline's history for decades. Wet-lease is the term used to rent aircraft and crew from other airlines in order to maintain or expand its own air traffic. Increasing demand and structural challenges in its own fleet have prompted AUA to rely on several partners in the 2025 summer flight schedule, including BRA Braathens Regional Airlines and Air Baltic. Wet-lease as a solution to capacity bottlenecks Renting wet-lease aircraft is a valuable strategy for airlines like Austrian Airlines in times of seasonal peaks and operational challenges. Since the start of the 2024 summer flight schedule, two ATR 72-600s from the Swedish BRA Braathens Regional Airlines have been flying on routes for AUA, especially on routes where smaller aircraft are more economical. A third ATR will be used on the newly introduced connection between Linz and Frankfurt from October 2024. These routes do not offer the necessary capacity to operate larger aircraft such as the Airbus A320 models profitably. Another wet-lease aircraft that has been in use since June 2024 is an Embraer E195 from Air Dolomiti. This aircraft flies on the route from Vienna to Venice and compensates for the loss of a damaged Airbus A320 Neo. Wet-lease as a future strategy: expanding cooperation The cooperation with wet-lease partners could be expanded even further in the future, as Sciortino indicated in his remarks. Especially during the summer months, when passenger volumes are lower than in the summer months.
