Sweden abolishes air traffic tax: Ryanair responds with expansion

Following the Swedish government's decision to abolish the air transport tax from July 1, 2025, low-cost airline Ryanair has announced that it will significantly expand its offering in Sweden. This development underlines the close link between tax policy and economic growth in the aviation sector. Since 2018, Sweden has levied a tax that ranged from SEK 76 to 504 (approximately USD 7 to 49) per ticket, depending on the flight distance. The levy was introduced as part of efforts to reduce CO2 emissions in aviation. The government's change of course is interpreted by the industry as a response to economic pressure and the need to revitalize air transport. The tax was seen as a hurdle for airlines operating in Sweden, as it caused higher operating costs compared to other EU countries. Ryanair responded immediately to the tax reform and plans to increase the number of its aircraft based in Sweden by 33%. The airline will bring two additional Boeing 737 aircraft to Sweden, which will be based at Stockholm-Arlanda and Gothenburg airports. This measure represents an investment of around 200 million US dollars and is estimated to create 60 new jobs. Ten new routes are also planned, increasing the number of routes served by Ryanair in Sweden to 81 - a record level for the company in the Scandinavian country. Ryanair CEO Eddie Wilson described the abolition of the air travel tax as a "forward-looking decision" by the Swedish government and said that it would improve Sweden's competitiveness on the international market. The group sees this as an opportunity to significantly expand its presence in Sweden. Wilson

Air Astana adds additional tanks to some A321LRs

Air Astana is modernizing its fleet to increase efficiency in long-haul traffic. From October 4, 2024, the Kazakh airline will resume its connection between Almaty and London - this time without the previous stopover in Aktau. This is made possible by the installation of additional fuel tanks in the Airbus A321LR, which allows the airline to fly the route without a stopover. This shortens the flight time by 90 minutes to around 9 hours and 35 minutes. Air Astana had already been offering flights between the two cities since March 2022, but was dependent on a stopover due to the range of the aircraft. The technical upgrade of the aircraft is intended to increase operational efficiency and improve passenger comfort. The conversion to the Airbus A321LR represents an important step in the airline's long-term strategy, which also includes safety and technical aspects. The new flight connection will enable one of the world's longest scheduled flights by a narrow-body aircraft.
