The airline transported a sculpture of the little thinker that will be installed on Monday in Madrid's central Matadero Avenue as a tribute to its creator. The sculpture, made by Argentine artist Pablo Irrang, is made of pigmented epoxy resin and quartz filling, which gives it great resistance to the elements. With a height of 80 cm and a width and depth of 45 cm each, Mafalda becomes part of a select group of only twelve cities around the world that present this character in their streets. During the flight, the sculpture surprised the passengers, who captured this special moment. This action by Iberia is part of a broader commitment to promote cultural exchange between Spain and Latin America and aims to strengthen relations between the two regions. Braathens-Wetlease: AUA has reactivated Linz-Frankfurt

On October 28, 2024, the first aircraft took off from Linz Airport on behalf of Austrian Airlines to reach Frankfurt. This restoration of the flight connection marks a significant step forward for the Upper Austrian economy and represents a connection to the largest hub of the Lufthansa Group. The connection will be operated three times a day, which will particularly benefit business travelers who want to travel to the metropolis from Linz. The ATR 72-600 aircraft, which has space for 72 passengers, is provided by Braathens Regional Airlines. The decision to serve this route with a smaller aircraft is a strategic response to business travel that has not yet fully returned. Norbert Draskovits, Managing Director of Linz Airport, emphasizes that the high frequency of flights makes it possible to reach as many connecting flights as possible in Frankfurt, which is of great importance for the region. Before the de Havilland Dash 8-400 operated by Austrian Airlines itself was phased out, such aircraft were in use from most of the state airports. This model formed the backbone of AUA's regional fleet and was indispensable, especially after the resumption of flight operations at the beginning of the Corona pandemic. ATR72-600s operated by Braathens have been wet-leased for some time. This step has been criticized internally. Economic importance of the connection The connection to Frankfurt is important not only for air traffic, but also for the entire economy of Upper Austria. The region is considered one of the most important industrial and exporting areas in Austria, where numerous companies operate globally. Access to an international hub is crucial for the

Verdi criticizes working conditions at Munich Airport

The Verdi union has sharply criticized the personnel policy and working conditions at Munich Airport. According to Yvonne Götz of Verdi Bayern, there is a chronic shortage of staff in several areas, especially in ground handling. In the summer, 600 to 700 employees were missing there, Götz told the Bayerische Staatszeitung. In order to keep operations running, employees are required to work longer and more frequent shifts. The strain leads to a high sickness rate of up to 23 percent at peak times, such as during the summer holidays. This means that one in five employees was unable to work at times. A spokesman for the airport put the allegations into perspective and stated that the sickness rate in 2023 would be an average of 9,5 percent and had currently fallen to nine percent. At the subsidiary responsible for handling, the rate had also fallen to 2024 percent in 13. The high number of sick days is due, among other things, to the physically demanding work. Verdi also warns of growing problems with baggage handling, which results in long queues and increased baggage losses. Despite a massive recruitment drive that filled 1500 new positions, there are still difficulties in finding suitable staff. The airport is therefore investing more in health-promoting measures and further training. However, unemployment in the Freising region is very low, which makes the search for staff even more difficult.

Russia confiscates Fraport's share in Pulkovo Airport

Russian President Vladimir Putin has approved the transfer of German airport operator Fraport's 25 percent stake in Pulkovo Airport in St. Petersburg to an unnamed party, according to a recently published decree. Since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the Kremlin has repeatedly placed assets of Western companies under Russian control, affecting companies such as Fraport, Danish brewing group Carlsberg and French food group Danone. Fraport had put its involvement in Pulkovo on hold after the war in Ukraine began in 2022 and fully wrote off its claims from the original loan in June 2022. Pulkovo Airport was placed under the control of a new Russian holding company in December 2023, depriving investors from Germany, Qatar and other countries of control. A Fraport spokesman described the transfer approval as an "important interim step" and stressed that a final transaction, however, depends on further conditions and approvals. According to a Russian decree, Pulkovo Airport will be temporarily managed by a newly established Russian company. Fraport currently has no legal control over its original shares and is nevertheless pursuing the goal of recovering the assets and selling its shares.

KlasJet receives extended maintenance approval for Boeing 737NG

Charter operator KlasJet has received an extension to its EASA Part 145 certification, allowing the company to carry out maintenance on Boeing 737NG (Next Generation) aircraft in-house. This certification extension gives KlasJet more operational flexibility by reducing dependence on external maintenance providers and optimizing turnaround times. According to Aivaras Svirplys, Technical Director of KlasJet, the approval means that maintenance issues can be resolved more quickly, which is particularly beneficial given the predicted shortage of skilled workers in the maintenance industry from 2027 onwards. Experts expect a global shortage of around 48.000 aircraft maintenance workers by then, which could lead to bottlenecks. KlasJet, a subsidiary of the Avia Solutions Group, currently operates a fleet of eight modified Boeing 737-800s and five Boeing 737 classics, which are used for both VIP charter and ACMI flights. With the expanded Part 145 approval, the company wants to reduce costs while increasing the operational readiness of its fleet.
