According to reports, the affected shipments contain highly flammable magnesium, which is particularly difficult to extinguish and can reach temperatures of over 2.500 degrees Celsius. These incidents, which took place in the DHL air freight centers in Leipzig and Birmingham, are now being investigated by international anti-terror investigators. The Federal Prosecutor's Office in Germany has taken over the investigation and has already arrested several suspects. Security authorities are warning of further possible incidents and recommend that companies sensitize their employees to security risks. In response to the incidents, DHL has taken measures to protect its infrastructure and shipments. Increase in air traffic leads to delays: Eurocontrol warns of challenges

In the summer of 2024, air traffic in Europe increased by five percent compared to the previous year, but this resulted in significant delays for passengers. Over a third of all flights had an arrival delay of 15 minutes or more. Eurocontrol, the European organization for aviation safety, attributes the delays to staff shortages in air traffic control services, unexpected traffic growth in certain regions, adverse weather conditions and a high number of unannounced flights. According to Eurocontrol, this summer saw the worst air traffic performance since 1999. The organization has presented an action paper recommending structural reforms to keep pace with rising traffic volumes and address the effects of climate change. The total cost of the delays was estimated at around 1,8 billion euros, with capacity constraints and staffing problems being the main causes.

Austria: Price increase for annual vignette causes criticism

Today, November 5, 2024, is the deadline for submitting comments on the vignette price regulation, which provides for an increase in the price of the annual vignette to 103,8 euros. The ÖAMTC is sharply critical of this price increase and points out that ASFINAG recently paid another dividend of 255 million euros to the federal government. In total, ASFINAG's dividend payments since 2011 have amounted to around two billion euros. The mobility club argues that the constant increase in vignette prices is not necessary if the federal government does not continuously withdraw capital from ASFINAG that is intended to finance motorways and expressways. Waiving such deductions could reduce ASFINAG's debt by up to a fifth. The vignette price regulation provides that the cost of the vignette will remain stable for the coming years, but this is considered insufficient in the context of the recent price increase. The ÖAMTC is calling for a review of pricing in order not to unnecessarily increase the financial burden on consumers.
