“FlyDBA” starts with new regional connection between Stuttgart and Münster/Osnabrück

From January 17, 2025, the new virtual airline "FlyDBA" will offer its first connection between Stuttgart and Münster/Osnabrück. The flight, which will initially only be operated on Fridays, marks the return of "Deutsche BA" under a new brand. Although the airline does not operate its own aircraft, the flights are operated in cooperation with Franconia Air Service. Small Diamond Aircraft DA-62 aircraft, which can only carry five passengers, are used for the route. "FlyDBA" pursues a more regional strategy and is primarily aimed at business travelers who want to save time. Ticket prices are around 600 to 700 euros. Martin Michael, who is behind the airline, emphasizes that the route is initially a test run and that no new routes are planned. With this connection, the airline wants to fill the gap that arose after Lufthansa flights between Frankfurt and Münster/Osnabrück were discontinued. The former "Deutsche BA", which was founded by British Airways in 1992 and merged into Air Berlin in 2008, has nothing in common with the new "FlyDBA". Nevertheless, Michael is relying on the brand and an innovative, flexible business strategy.

Easyjet returns to Düsseldorf: More competitive pressure for Eurowings?

Easyjet is planning to return to Düsseldorf Airport in 2025, opening three international routes after a five-year break. This decision marks a significant turning point in the German market for the airline, which had withdrawn significantly from domestic routes in recent years. The British low-cost airline has announced that it will be offering connections to London Gatwick, Edinburgh and Nice from Düsseldorf from summer 2025 and sees this return as an opportunity to specifically serve market needs. Düsseldorf Airport in particular is optimistic and is celebrating the airline's return as an important success, especially given the currently complex framework conditions in German air traffic. Withdrawal and new opportunities for Easyjet in Germany Since Easyjet's last appearance in 2020, the picture of the German market has changed significantly. Easyjet had increasingly focused on the Berlin market in Germany and gradually reduced its domestic German connections after the closure of Berlin Tegel Airport in 2020. Düsseldorf was abandoned at that time, and domestic German routes such as Berlin-Düsseldorf, which were previously offered by Easyjet, also disappeared. In recent years, rising operating costs, stricter environmental regulations and the pandemic have affected competition at Düsseldorf Airport. But the return of the airline, which in 2018 jokingly encouraged people to visit "uncooler cities" like Düsseldorf in a controversial campaign, shows that from Easyjet's point of view, the market once again offers attractive gaps and growth potential. The introduction of connections to London-Gatwick, Edinburgh and Nice is strategic: While London is considered an important international hub for business travellers and tourists, Edinburgh and Nice are popular destinations for holiday travellers. Especially in Great Britain

Trade unions demand reforms: High location costs endanger German aviation

The German aviation industry continues to be under pressure. After the economic losses caused by the pandemic and the current challenges of the energy transition, another factor is now coming into focus: the high location costs at German airports. After the service union Verdi called on politicians to take action in advance, the Independent Flight Attendants Organization (Ufo) is now also calling for a reduction in location costs and measures for better social conditions. The challenges facing the German aviation market are profound and far-reaching. While airlines in other European countries have already largely recovered from the slump caused by the Corona crisis, the German aviation industry is struggling with higher operating costs and complex market conditions that put it at a disadvantage compared to other countries. This problem not only affects the airlines, but also the jobs of many employees, which could be put at risk by possible relocation of flight services abroad. In a press release, Ufo chairman Joachim Vázquez Bürger explained the union's position and made it clear that the problem was not only due to personnel costs, but primarily to management errors and high location costs. Competitive disadvantages due to high costs and different framework conditions Ufo and Verdi argue that the German aviation market has structural problems that severely hamper growth compared to Europe. One of the main points of criticism concerns the high location costs at German airports. For example, the air traffic tax that airlines have to pay for passengers departing from Germany causes additional costs. This tax is comparatively high in Germany and makes the aviation industry less competitive compared to locations abroad. While the air traffic tax is set much lower in countries such as Ireland or Denmark, or
