Smuggling on a large scale: record arrest at Vienna Airport

At Vienna Airport, the customs team made a spectacular seizure of historic proportions during travel traffic and mobile checks. On October 31, 2024, significant quantities of illegal goods were discovered during the inspection of three passengers from Cairo. The smugglers' suitcases contained 852 cartons of cigarettes, more than 170.000 cigarettes, around 50 kilograms of shisha tobacco and 6.276 potency pills. The total value of the seized goods and the threatened penalties shed light on the activities of the customs officers and the importance of their work for the security and integrity of Austria as a business location. The decisive success of the customs team at Vienna Airport was the result of intensive risk analyses and targeted investigations. Finance Minister Gunter Mayr praised the expertise and commitment of the customs officers: “Our customs officers regularly achieve considerable successes both in the cargo sector and in travel traffic. When the right suitcases are pulled out of millions of suitcases, it shows how professionally we are fighting smuggling here.” The first person to be targeted by customs authorities was a 61-year-old Italian. The man, who was travelling with four suitcases, was checked on the basis of a risk analysis. During the inspection using an X-ray machine, the explosive cargo was discovered: the suitcases were full to the brim with cigarettes and shisha tobacco. The discovery led to the targeted examination of the other passengers, including a 30-year-old Frenchman and a 49-year-old fellow traveller. When they noticed the first passenger and the check, they tried to avoid the customs check by storing their suitcases. But the experienced customs officers were not fooled and also asked for their suitcases to be checked. The haul was

The Dream of Flying: A Photographic Look at 70 Years of Vienna Airport

Since its foundation in 1954, Vienna Airport has developed into an indispensable hub for air traffic in Europe. With over 100.000 passengers and around 700 take-offs and landings every day, it is now the largest employer in the eastern region of Austria and a symbol of the tireless human urge to conquer the skies. This development was recently honored with the presentation of the art photo book "The Dream of Flying", which documents both the technical achievements and the human passion that characterize this place. What once began with a modest infrastructure and a team of around 100 employees has developed into a globally important airport that counts over 30 million air travelers every year. This success story is not only the result of innovative technology and economic foresight, but also the fruit of a centuries-old fascination with flying that drove Daedalus and Icarus to their first high-altitude flights. Vienna Airport, with its history and its current role as a centre for air traffic, is the expression of this human curiosity and the tireless efforts to reach ever new heights. A unique photo project The art photo book "The Dream of Flying" offers an impressive insight into the everyday life of the airport and shows it from an artistic perspective. Initiated under the direction of the renowned publisher and photographer Lois Lammerhuber and in collaboration with the author Thomas Brezina, eight internationally recognised photographers document the airport operations over a period of 24 hours. The images range from the busy aprons and runways to emotional moments in the terminals and
