Dortmund Airport records a decline in passengers during the Christmas holidays

Dortmund Airport closed the 2024/2025 Christmas holidays with a total of 145.695 passengers, a decrease of 4,9 percent compared to the previous year. The airport cites the fact that the Christmas holidays were one day shorter as the reason for the decrease. Nevertheless, individual flight connections were particularly in demand due to high capacity utilization. The most popular destinations over the holidays included Chişinău, Varna, Rome and London. Flights to Bucharest, Tirana and Sofia were also particularly busy. However, Katowice remained the most popular destination: the connection operated by Wizz Air and Ryanair recorded the highest number of connections during the holiday period with 126 flights. The busiest day was Saturday, December 28, when 105 flight movements and 9.869 passengers were registered. The airport's current flight program will remain in place until the end of March, before the summer season begins.

Ryanair demands consequences after incident with disruptive passenger

On Monday 13 January 2025, Ryanair published details of the costs it incurred as a result of an incident involving a disruptive passenger. On 9 April 2024, a flight from Dublin to Lanzarote was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Porto. The passenger was arrested after landing. The airline then had to accommodate over 160 passengers and crew in Porto overnight and provide a replacement aircraft, resulting in total costs of over 15.000 euros. According to Ryanair, the expenses included additional fuel costs, accommodation, meals, airport and handling fees, and legal fees. The airline announced that it would file a civil suit in Irish courts to recover these costs from the person responsible. Ryanair also criticised the inaction of European authorities in dealing with disruptive passengers who endanger safety. The incident has reignited the debate about alcohol consumption at airports. Ryanair is calling for a limit on the sale of alcoholic beverages to a maximum of two per passenger using the boarding pass. The airline points out that measures have already been taken to limit alcohol consumption on board, while there are still no binding regulations in place at airports. The airline stressed that such incidents not only cause high costs, but also affect the safety and travel experience of passengers and crew. It appealed to the EU authorities to create uniform regulations on the sale of alcohol and the punishment of disruptive behavior.

IndiGo: Preparations for nonstop flights to Europe

Indian airline IndiGo has taken a major step towards wider international expansion. On January 13, 2025, the airline announced that it had begun hiring airport managers for its airports in London, Paris and Amsterdam. This announcement coincides with the impending launch of nonstop flights to Europe in 2025, with the airline leasing Boeing 787-9 aircraft from Norse Atlantic Airways. The first flights are scheduled to start in February 2025, with regular service to major European hubs London-Heathrow (LHR), Paris-Charles De Gaulle (CDG) and Amsterdam-Schiphol (AMS). This will put IndiGo in direct competition with its domestic rival Air India, which has been expanding its own international reach in recent years. IndiGo has established itself as India's fastest growing airline in recent years. The company, which was previously mainly known for short-haul flights within India and to neighbouring regions, is now making a strategic change of direction. Until now, the airline operated almost exclusively with narrow-body aircraft, particularly from the Airbus A320 family, which are suitable for domestic and international short-haul flights of up to six hours. By expanding to include long-haul flights, IndiGo now wants to have a stronger presence on an international level and open up new markets. The decision to lease Boeing 787-9 aircraft represents an important step in the implementation of these plans. The wet lease agreement with Norse Atlantic Airways provides for IndiGo to take over up to six Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners in order to equip the airline with larger aircraft for long-haul connections over the next few years. The first two of these aircraft are scheduled to arrive in February

Ryanair calls for stricter alcohol regulations at airports

Irish low-cost airline Ryanair has made a clear appeal to EU authorities, demanding stricter regulations on alcohol consumption at airports. The background to this is the increasing number of incidents in which passengers are caught consuming excessive amounts of alcohol and disrupting flight operations. This demand was reiterated after a costly incident in April 2024 that required a flight to be diverted. Ryanair proposes that passengers at airports should be limited to a maximum of two alcoholic drinks. This could be implemented through the use of boarding passes, similar to limiting duty-free purchases. According to a spokesperson for the airline, such a regulation would help improve passenger behavior on board and ensure a safer travel experience for passengers and crew. The airline has already restricted the sale of alcohol on board its flights and points out that the majority of problematic cases are due to alcohol consumption during long layovers or delays at airports. Incident with consequences: diversion to Porto The incident that underpins Ryanair's demands occurred on April 9, 2024. A flight from Dublin to Lanzarote had to be diverted to Porto due to the improper behavior of a heavily intoxicated passenger. There, the troublemaker was removed from the plane by the police and arrested. The diversion had far-reaching consequences. Due to the crew's limited working hours, more than 160 passengers were forced to spend the night at Porto Airport. Ryanair covered the costs of accommodation and meals, had to organize a replacement aircraft and a new crew and ensure the delayed onward flight. Costs of the

Economic importance of the Vienna State Opera confirmed

A recent study by the Vienna Chamber of Commerce underlines the important role of the Vienna State Opera as an economic factor. According to the study, the renowned opera house contributes almost 300 million euros to the gross domestic product (GDP) annually, secures 3.700 jobs and generates 79 million euros in taxes and duties. Walter Ruck, President of the Vienna Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes: "The Vienna State Opera is not only a cultural flagship of Austria, but also an economic engine." The analysis is based on data from the 2023/24 season and takes into account both the State Opera's operating expenses and the expenses of visitors, especially tourists. In the season mentioned, the State Opera invested around 14 million euros and recorded total expenses of 145 million euros. These expenses resulted in a GDP contribution of 177 million euros, secured 1.700 jobs and generated 44 million euros in taxes and duties. In addition, around 650.000 people attended the State Opera's musical events, with 40 percent of visitors coming from abroad. The expenditure of these tourists contributed 119 million euros to the GDP, created around 2.000 jobs and led to tax revenues of 35 million euros. Bogdan Roščić, Director of the State Opera, emphasizes: "The state subsidy in the form of the direct fiscal effects of our operation goes back to the finance minister almost exactly to the euro." The study thus illustrates the economic relevance of the Vienna State Opera and provides arguments for a well-founded cultural policy discussion.
