Air freight in Germany is struggling with staff shortages

The Association of German Air Cargo Handlers (VACAD) reported an increase in cargo volume for the second quarter of 2025. The volume handled rose by 3,7 percent to approximately 452.395 tons. At the same time, the number of employees in the industry fell by seven percent to 3.180. This development is a concern for the association. VACAD Chairman Claus Wagner warned that the ongoing decline in personnel numbers could jeopardize the reliable handling of growing cargo volumes. He cited the lengthy security clearances for new personnel as the main cause of the shortage. These regulatory processes represent a significant competitive disadvantage compared to other sectors and slow down the hiring of new employees. To counteract the staff shortage, the association is calling for greater digitalization and networking among the relevant authorities. The goal of this measure is to accelerate the security clearance processes and thus facilitate the hiring of qualified employees. The association sees this as the key to managing the increasing cargo volume. The German air freight industry is thus faced with the paradoxical situation of growing business while the necessary workforce to handle the volumes is lacking. The association's demand aims to remedy this discrepancy through improved administrative processes.

Tui achieves highest quarterly profit in company history

The travel group TUI achieved an operating profit of €320,6 million in the third quarter of the current financial year. This is the highest quarterly operating profit in the company's history and represents an increase of €88,7 million compared to the same period last year. Air India suspends Delhi-Washington service

Discover Airlines adjusts winter flight schedule to Mexico

British Airways sues Boston Airport and ground handling service

British Airways has filed a lawsuit for damages against the operator of Boston's Logan Airport and a local ground services provider. The lawsuit is directed against Massport, the airport operator, and Oxford Airport Technical Services. The lawsuit stems from a technical incident in June 2022 in which one of the airline's aircraft was damaged. According to the lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court in Boston, on June 8, 2022, prior to departure of Flight BA212 to London, the stationary power supply failed. A mobile backup unit that was subsequently deployed also failed, causing significant damage to the aircraft's electrical system. As a result, British Airways personnel were unable to restart the aircraft, and the flight had to be canceled. The repair of the damaged aircraft was so complex that it had to be transported to England for repairs. This resulted in downtime of several weeks. British Airways estimates the damages at at least $293.000, equivalent to approximately €252.000. This sum includes repair costs, passenger care costs, and lost revenue. In addition to the direct costs, the airline is also seeking interest and reimbursement of legal fees. The lawsuit seeks to recover the financial losses British Airways claims it has incurred as a result of the incident.

US authorities in antitrust dispute: Delta and Aeromexico request a delay

Frankfurt Airport records passenger increase in July 2025

Frankfurt Airport (FRA) handled a total of 2025 million travelers in July 6,1. This represents an increase of 1,6 percent compared to the same month last year. European holiday destinations, including Greece, Italy, and Spain, were particularly popular. Demand also surged on intercontinental routes, especially for destinations in Thailand and East Africa. In addition to passenger traffic, cargo volume also increased by 3,7 percent to 179.055 tons. This positive development is also reflected in the international portfolio of airport operator Fraport. The total number of passengers at all actively managed airports rose by 4,6 percent to around 22,9 million in July. The 14 Greek regional airports recorded an increase of 2,4 percent to 6,6 million passengers. In Bulgaria, the coastal airports of Burgas and Varna welcomed 828.538 passengers, an increase of 4,0 percent, while the Slovenian airport of Ljubljana saw an even stronger increase of 12,2 percent to 181.599 travelers. Fraport's two Brazilian airports, Fortaleza and Porto Alegre, recorded exceptional growth, increasing by 96,9 percent to 1,3 million passengers. This increase is attributable to a special effect, as massive flooding in July of the previous year severely disrupted flight operations at Porto Alegre. The Peruvian airport of Lima also recorded growth of 5,4 percent. Only the Turkish airport of Antalya remained virtually unchanged at the previous year's level, with 5,6 million passengers. The increase in passenger numbers at Frankfurt Airport and across the entire Group demonstrates the high level of travel during the summer season. The rising demand for vacation travel, particularly to popular holiday destinations in Southern Europe, is a key driver of this positive development.
