First Alpine Water Festival announced in Klostertal

The Klostertal valley in Vorarlberg is preparing for a major new event in the summer of 2026. From July 2nd to 5th, the first Alpine Water Festival will take place, focusing on the region's landscape shaped by mountain streams, waterfalls, and lakes. The organizers have divided the program into four core areas: Experience, Power, Indulgence, and Family. The aim of the multi-day event is to introduce both tourists and locals to the diverse facets of water as a resource in the high mountains. Guided hikes to striking natural landmarks such as the Mason Waterfall will be combined with technical insights into regional energy production. A central aspect of the festival is the economic and technological importance of water for the region. As part of the hydropower program, visitors will have access to the Spullersee Power Plant. This historic pumped-storage power plant, owned by the Austrian Federal Railways and in operation since the 1920s, plays a vital role in supplying electricity to the railways in western Austria. Providing background knowledge about the different types of water and the industrial use of the alpine topography forms a professional counterpoint to the tourist offerings. This positions the Klostertal not only as a recreational area but also as an important location for alpine infrastructure. The social highlight of the festival is planned for Saturday evening at the Klösterle Alpine Water Park. There, the natural bathing lake serves as the backdrop for a multimedia water show, featuring projections on a 20-meter-wide water screen. A street food festival, featuring local restaurants, will accompany the show. A culinary rally, titled "Water.Enjoyment," will also be organized, linking culinary stations with prominent water features in the valley. Special research and activities will be offered for younger audiences.

New publication sheds light on a century of Lufthansa corporate history

To mark the 100th anniversary of the Lufthansa brand, Prestel Publishing will release a comprehensive historical study entitled "Lufthansa – The First 100 Years" on March 18, 2026. The approximately 400-page work was authored by renowned economic historians Hartmut Berghoff, Manfred Grieger, and Jörg Lesczenski. The authors draw on extensive research in the company archives as well as external sources to trace the development from the beginnings of civil aviation in the 1920s to the global corporation it is today. In addition to technological milestones and phases of economic expansion, the book offers visual documentation through numerous photographs and historical advertising materials. A central component of this scholarly study is the critical examination of the role of the first Lufthansa during the Nazi era between 1933 and 1945. The historians meticulously document the company's entanglements with the Nazi regime, its involvement in the armaments industry, and its use of forced labor. This thorough analysis is part of the corporation's long-standing strategy to make its past transparent. Following the liquidation of the original company after World War II and its re-establishment in 1953, the volume also addresses the arduous reconstruction of the fleet and its subsequent establishment in the international jet age. From an economic history perspective, the work illustrates the transformation process from a state-dominated airline to a privatized, globally operating aviation corporation. Key technological innovations, such as the introduction of jet propulsion and the expansion of the route network, are placed within the context of broader aviation history. The publication will initially appear in German; an English translation for the international market is already in preparation.

The Lower Austria Card starts the new season with a record offer

The Lower Austria Card enters its 21st season on April 1, 2026, and, with a total of 369 destinations, presents the most comprehensive portfolio in its history. At the official launch in St. Pölten, Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner highlighted the consistently strong performance figures from the previous year: By the end of February 2026, approximately 235.000 cards had been issued, resulting in around 1,7 million uses. A key aspect of the current strategy is the increased promotion of short breaks, as around 30 percent of cardholders now combine their trip with at least one overnight stay. This supports Lower Austria Tourism's goal of establishing the province as a year-round destination and sustainably increasing the region's economic output. For the 2026/27 season, 17 new partners have been added to the program, including leisure facilities such as the Leobendorf trampoline park, the Aviaticum aviation museum in Wiener Neustadt, and several outdoor swimming pools in Gablitz, Kilb, and Retz. This year's cultural focus is on the Lower Austrian State Exhibition in Amstetten/Mauer, as well as on special city tours commemorating St. Pölten's 40th anniversary as the state capital. Despite sometimes challenging weather conditions during the past summer months, the card proved to be a stabilizing factor for participating businesses, with usage increasing significantly, particularly in the winter months of December and January. Financially, the model remains attractive for target groups in Lower Austria and Vienna, with a remarkable 66 percent repeat customer rate. According to Reinhard Karl, Deputy General Director of Raiffeisenlandesbank NÖ-Wien, the card enables savings of over €4.000 when all offers are fully utilized. The season is being supported technically by the new digital assistant "Cardi," which assists users with...

Helsinki Airport expands its commercial offerings in the Schengen area

Finnish airport operator Finavia completed the expansion of commercial space at Helsinki Airport in March 2026. Located in the Schengen sector near Gate 30, the new area integrates four specialty shops and restaurants into a sophisticated design. The architectural concept draws inspiration from Nordic nature and includes a sculptural tree structure with an integrated swing and play areas for families. The aim of this expansion is to enhance the passenger experience for the more than one million passengers who use the airport each month and to strengthen the hub's position in the international competition for service quality. The new retail offerings focus on Scandinavian fashion and outdoor equipment. With the opening of a Partioaitta branch, travelers now have access to a specialist retailer of high-quality clothing and hiking gear, while the Lindex chain showcases its range of Nordic fashion. The area is complemented by the R-Kiosk and the specialty shop "Pure – Taste of Finland," which focuses on exporting local specialties and gift items. In the food service area, the family restaurant Picnic is introducing a new service concept that allows passengers to pick up pre-ordered meals directly for consumption on board. The infrastructure investment follows Helsinki Airport's recognition as "Commercial Space of the Year" at the NCSC Awards Finland 2025. According to Nora Immonen, Director of Commercial Services at Finavia, the company is responding to changing customer needs and the desire for authentic regional brands with this expansion. In total, travelers now have access to around 50 shops and just as many restaurants and cafés at the airport. This ongoing modernization is part of a

Ryanair criticizes traffic figures from Vienna Airport and demands tax cuts.

On March 17, 2026, low-cost carrier Ryanair published a scathing analysis of Vienna Airport's current traffic figures. According to the Irish market leader, the airport saw a 2% decline in flight movements in February compared to the previous year. Ryanair accuses airport management of obscuring the true market trend by including transit passengers. Specifically, these are technical stopovers by Air India aircraft used solely for refueling. The airline claims these passenger numbers are being falsely included in the statistics to conceal the shrinking passenger volume at the Vienna hub. This criticism comes at a time of massive restructuring at Vienna Airport. This week, competitor Wizz Air closed its base in Vienna and withdrew its five aircraft stationed there. The affected capacity was relocated to countries such as Slovakia and Italy. Ryanair attributes this withdrawal directly to the Austrian air passenger tax of €12 per passenger and high base fees. In competing countries like Sweden and Hungary, similar taxes have already been abolished to specifically promote growth in the aviation industry and job creation in the tourism sector. Andreas Gruber, spokesperson for Ryanair, called on the Austrian federal government under Chancellor Christian Stocker and Transport Minister Peter Hanke to take immediate action. He described the current tax burden as detrimental to competition and warned of a further exodus of air traffic to tax-free neighboring countries. To safeguard Vienna's attractiveness as an aviation hub, the company is demanding not only the abolition of the ticket tax, but also a reduction in air traffic control fees and the reintroduction of incentive programs for

Analysis reveals potential savings for city breaks over the Easter holidays 2026

Just before the start of the Easter holidays, current market data from the travel platform Skyscanner shows that despite high demand, those who decide to travel at the last minute can find affordable offers over the extended weekend from Good Friday to Easter Monday. Destinations where hotel prices for April 2026 are below the seasonal average are particularly attractive. Croatian destinations such as Split and Dubrovnik offer significant savings compared to regular April rates, which can reach up to €157, with average overnight costs of €99 and €117 respectively. The northern Italian metropolis of Milan also positions itself as an attractive option at €179 per night, as prices there typically rise above €400 during peak spring season. Complementing the hotel data, an analysis of flight prices shows that Milan, with an average price of €123, is the cheapest destination for departures from German airports. It is followed by London at €161 and Paris at €195. For travelers from western Germany, there are also specific bargains to be found, such as flights from Düsseldorf to Milan starting at €122 or from Dortmund to London starting at €116. Travel experts advise using flexible travel dates when searching, as the days immediately before and after holidays tend to have the highest peak prices. Shifting your departure by just one day can significantly reduce the costs of transport and accommodation. The 2026 Travel Trends Report also highlights a shift in booking behavior: the choice of accommodation is increasingly determining the overall nature of the trip. Many vacationers are specifically using filters for free cancellations to secure prices early, without sacrificing flexibility.

Condor expands short-haul network through wet-lease partnership with Helvetic Airways

German leisure airline Condor is increasing its operational capacity at its Frankfurt hub for the upcoming 2026 summer season through a cooperation with the Swiss carrier Helvetic Airways. Under a wet-lease agreement, Helvetic Airways will operate two Embraer E190 aircraft for Condor, including crew, maintenance, and insurance. This measure aims to manage seasonal traffic peaks and ensure a stable flight schedule on selected European routes. The partnership complements existing collaborations with other service providers such as German Airways and underscores Condor's strategy of utilizing specialized capacity providers during periods of high demand. The deployment of the Swiss aircraft will be phased in, focusing on four destinations from Frankfurt. The first service, on April 30, 2026, will be to Zurich, with two daily flights. This will be followed on May 1 by the route to London Gatwick, also with two daily flights. Shortly thereafter, starting May 10, Milan-Malpensa will be added to the flight schedule once daily, before the route to Tbilisi completes the offering on June 15. The Embraer regional jets used feature a classic 2-2 seating configuration in a two-class layout, eliminating the middle seat and providing greater travel comfort on short-haul flights. Additional industry analysis shows that Condor's reliance on wet-lease partners is also a response to its ongoing fleet renewal. While the company is investing heavily in new Airbus models, partners like Helvetic Airways bridge short-term capacity gaps and enable flexible adjustments to booking patterns. Helvetic Airways is considered an experienced systems partner in the aviation industry, boasting, among other things, many years of experience working with the Lufthansa Group. This cooperation allows Condor to increase frequencies on

Complete standstill at BER airport due to a one-day warning strike

Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) experienced massive disruptions to air traffic on Wednesday. A full-day warning strike by the Verdi union has suspended all passenger flights. This affected approximately 445 flight movements and around 57.000 passengers, who had to either rebook their flights or find alternative transportation. The strike involved about 2.000 employees of the Berlin-Brandenburg Airport Authority (FBB), including key personnel from the airport fire brigade, air traffic control, and terminal management. Because safety cannot be guaranteed without the fire brigade, the runway remains closed to regular passenger traffic. The industrial action stems from stalled wage negotiations between Verdi and FBB. The union is demanding a six percent pay increase, or at least a monthly base increase of €250, for a 12-month contract. Verdi is also demanding an exclusive day off for union members. The employers had previously submitted an offer proposing annual increases of between one and 1,5 percent, but including a wage freeze until June 2026. Verdi negotiator Holger Rößler described this proposal as a provocation, while airport CEO Aletta von Massenbach criticized the strike as disproportionate given the tense international security situation. The economic impact of the strike is hitting the airport at a sensitive time. Further research reveals that BER has already been struggling with high debt burdens and fluctuating passenger numbers in previous years. A complete shutdown would mean millions in lost revenue for the airport company due to the lack of landing fees and sales from shops and restaurants. Experts point out that the willingness to strike is currently high nationwide in the aviation sector, as many employees are seeking compensation for the real wage losses of recent years.

Sita introduces cloud-based analytics platform to reduce baggage errors

Aviation company Sita has unveiled "Sita Bag Radar," a new technological solution designed to help airlines and airports reduce the rising rates of misdirected baggage worldwide. The cloud-based platform uses predictive analytics and artificial intelligence to identify potential disruptions in the baggage process before they occur. Previously, operational data in air traffic was primarily used reactively to investigate losses after the fact. In contrast, the new system relies on real-time monitoring and historical data analysis to make bottlenecks at connecting flights or operational overloads visible on dashboards at an early stage. The platform's technical foundation is the integration of existing data sources such as WorldTracer, Baggage Recovery Systems (BRS), and Departure Control Systems (DCS). By consolidating this information in a unified cloud environment, ground staff and operations teams gain complete transparency across the entire journey of a suitcase. According to Nicole Hogg, Head of Baggage at Sita, these AI-powered predictions enable teams to intervene directly in the sorting process. The goal is to significantly minimize the number of missed connecting flights for baggage, which is one of the main reasons for delayed deliveries worldwide. From an economic perspective, the solution addresses one of the industry's biggest cost drivers. Every year, misdirected or lost baggage costs the aviation industry billions, due to costly resupply and compensation payments to passengers. Sita Bag Radar is designed so that no extensive investments in physical airport infrastructure are necessary, as the system accesses existing data streams and messaging protocols. This enables rapid implementation at individual stations as well as in complex, global logistics networks of network airlines. Market observers view this move as a necessary digital upgrade.

Austrian gastronomy achieves record score in new Michelin selection

The publication of the 2026 Michelin Guide marks a historic high for Austria's culinary scene. A total of 101 restaurants were awarded the coveted stars, bringing the total to 124 – an increase of 20 compared to the previous year. Particularly noteworthy is the high number of newcomers: 22 restaurants received their first-ever one-star rating. With over 13 Michelin stars per million inhabitants, the country solidifies its position among the international elite and underscores the high quality of its culinary teams in global competition. The regional distribution of the awards reflects the diverse gastronomic offerings across the Austrian federal states. Vienna and Tyrol lead the way with 26 stars each, followed by Salzburg with 18 and Styria with 17. A special achievement was the restaurant "Die Weinbank" in Ehrenhausen, Styria, which was the only restaurant in the current selection to achieve two Michelin stars. The evaluation is carried out by anonymous inspectors according to globally standardized criteria, focusing on product quality, craftsmanship, the originality of the dishes, and the consistency of the service. Behind the nationwide return of the renowned restaurant guide is a large-scale collaboration between the Austrian National Tourist Office, the regional tourism organizations, and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber. Since 2025, the Austrian National Tourist Office has acted as the official destination partner to increase the international visibility of Austrian gastronomy. The selection process is complemented by special awards such as the Young Chef Award for Sebastian Stock and the Sommelier Award for Christian Zach. The official presentation of the plaques to the newly starred establishments will take place on March 23, 2026, as part of the culinary event.
