Cologne/Bonn Airport receives VdS certification for its security management system

Cologne/Bonn Airport is one of the first major commercial airports in Germany to have its security management certified according to the specific VdS 3406 standard. The certification from the Cologne-based testing organization VdS Schadenverhütung, a subsidiary of the German Insurance Association (GDV), confirms the operator's systematic and robust management of all security-relevant processes. The certificate confirms that the structures and procedures implemented at the airport exceed the legally required minimum standards and meet international best-practice standards in the field of risk prevention. The comprehensive audit process by the independent experts at VdS included a detailed examination of organizational, technical, and procedural security aspects. The assessment focused particularly on the effectiveness of the overarching management system and the establishment of continuous improvement mechanisms. These include regular risk analyses, clear lines of responsibility in the incident reporting chain, and the technical protection of the physical infrastructure against unauthorized access. VdS 3406 certification is specifically tailored to operators of critical infrastructure, which, due to their complexity and importance for public services, are subject to particularly stringent regulatory and operational requirements. By obtaining this seal of approval, Cologne/Bonn Airport strengthens its position among European air traffic hubs, especially in the area of cargo logistics. As the airport is one of the most important locations for express freight in Europe and operates around the clock, the reliability of its technical systems plays a crucial role for the logistics companies located there. VdS certification serves as objective proof to insurers and business partners that potential hazards are identified early and minimized through proactive security measures. Industry experts view this step as a signal of the increasing professionalization of security management in the aviation industry.

El Al opens a modernized lounge for premium customers at Ben Gurion Airport

Israeli airline El Al has completed the extensive renovation of its exclusive TOP Lounge in Terminal 3 of Ben Gurion Airport and reopened it to its Top Platinum members. The reopening is part of the company's long-term strategy to systematically expand its service offerings for its top-tier clientele and align them with international standards of luxury hospitality. The redesign involved a complete overhaul of the lounge's infrastructure to meet the needs of business travelers and discerning private clients. The project was architecturally overseen by the renowned firm Orly Shrem Architects, which specializes in luxury real estate design. In collaboration with several international partner companies, a modern spatial concept was implemented, encompassing various functional areas. Pitaro Hecht was responsible for the designer furniture, while Samsung supplied an integrated system of high-resolution displays for information and entertainment. The finishing touches, including flooring and wall coverings, were applied by the specialist HeziBank to ensure a cohesive and high-quality aesthetic. In addition to the visual upgrades, particular emphasis was placed on the functional layout of the lounge. Spacious reception areas were created, along with spatially separated zones designed for either relaxation or focused work. CEO Levy Halevy emphasized at the unveiling of the new facilities that the investment in the TOP Lounge represents a clear commitment to strengthening customer loyalty in the premium segment. Zurich Airport records significant increase in passenger numbers in March 2026

Zurich Airport concluded the first quarter of 2026 with positive passenger traffic figures. In March, a total of 2.470.257 passengers used Switzerland's largest air traffic hub, representing an increase of 4,9 percent compared to the same period last year. Of this total, approximately 1,64 million were local passengers, while transfer passengers accounted for roughly one-third, at 829.706. This development underscores the ongoing recovery of international travel and Zurich's central role as a European hub for long-haul connections. Parallel to the passenger growth, operational activity on the tarmac also increased. With 21.492 takeoffs and landings, 2,7 percent more aircraft movements were recorded than in March of the previous year. Particularly noteworthy is the increased efficiency in flight operations: the average number of passengers per aircraft climbed to 130, representing a rise of 2,8 percent. Furthermore, airline seat occupancy improved by 2,1 percentage points to 77,2 percent. Experts attribute this improvement to the increased use of larger aircraft types and more precise capacity planning by the airlines. In contrast to the passenger segment, the cargo business declined in March. The volume of goods handled fell by 3,6 percent to a total of 39.993 tons. This trend reflects the current slowdown in the global air freight market, which has already been observed at other major European airports. Analysts see this as a normalization after the exceptional years in the logistics sector, while airport operators are now focusing more on expanding terminal capacity and optimizing handling processes for leisure and business travelers. The available traffic data indicates a stable fiscal year for the airports.

Vienna: “L'Autentico” takes over traditional location in the ninth district

The Viennese restaurant company "L'Autentico" continues its expansion, taking over one of the most renowned Italian restaurants in Vienna's ninth district at Türkenstraße 27. Brothers André and Sandro Gargiulo are replacing their previous "Riva" concept and establishing their largest restaurant to date in the prestigious Servitenviertel. With a capacity of 165 indoor seats and an outdoor seating area for an additional 60, the establishment aims to further solidify its market leadership in the premium urban segment for Neapolitan pizza. This strategic realignment also includes, for the first time, a dedicated event space in the basement, designed exclusively for private parties with up to 55 seats. Culinary excellence remains unchanged, with the company relying on certification from the "Associazione Verace Pizza Napoletana" (AVPN), which sets strict standards for the production and ingredients of Neapolitan pizza. In addition to classic wood-fired oven specialties, the menu will feature an integrated bar focusing on Italian aperitifs, aiming to boost after-work business in the district. To celebrate the grand opening on April 18, 2026, management is launching a major marketing campaign, offering pizza reservations at the special price of €1,90. This initiative is designed to quickly build customer loyalty in the new neighborhood and immediately increase the restaurant's visibility. Alongside the new permanent location, the company is further expanding its presence in the ninth district: Starting May 4, 2026, "L'Autentico" will also have a guest appearance at the "Summerstage" on the Danube Canal, capitalizing on the seasonal popularity of Vienna's outdoor dining scene. The Gargiulo brothers, who already own several locations...

Fraport records stable growth despite strikes and geopolitical crises

Fraport AG reported positive traffic figures for March 2026, despite significant external pressures on operations at Frankfurt Airport. With approximately 4,7 million passengers, Germany's largest air traffic hub recorded an increase of 2,1 percent compared to the same month last year. This result is remarkable, given that two Lufthansa strike days in mid-March affected around 100.000 passengers and led to numerous flight cancellations. Furthermore, the tense situation in the Middle East severely impacted business: passenger numbers to this region plummeted by 68,6 percent. Nevertheless, Frankfurt was able to successfully offset the overall result with double-digit growth rates on routes to the Far East, particularly to China and Thailand, as well as to Africa. The logistics sector in Frankfurt also proved resilient. Cargo volume rose slightly by 0,4 percent to 185.486 tons in the reporting month. Interestingly, the number of aircraft movements decreased by 1,1 percent to 34.892 takeoffs and landings during the same period, suggesting higher utilization of the aircraft used or the deployment of larger aircraft types. Frankfurt Airport closed the first quarter of 2026 with a total of 12,7 million passengers, representing solid growth of 2,3 percent and underscoring the hub's importance in international comparison. The Fraport Group's international portfolio developed particularly dynamically. At its globally operating locations, the total number of passengers rose by 5,1 percent in March to approximately 10,3 million. Outstanding growth rates were reported by the Brazilian airports Fortaleza and Porto Alegre, with an increase of 18,2 percent, and Ljubljana Airport in Slovenia, with 17,0 percent. The Greek airports also saw significant growth.

ANA Holdings invests in Japanese residential startup ADDdress

Japanese airline group ANA Holdings, through its venture capital arm, the ANA Future Frontier Fund, has made a strategic investment in Tokyo-based startup ADDress. This company specializes in an innovative subscription model for multi-location living, addressing one of Japan's most pressing social problems: the increasing rural exodus and the resulting vacancy of properties in rural areas. Through this financial investment and closer cooperation, Japan's largest airline group aims to generate new domestic travel patterns and promote regional revitalization. ADDress's model allows subscribers to flexibly move between different fully furnished homes across Japan for a monthly fee. For ANA Holdings, this represents an important step in diversifying its business model to counteract the shrinking population and the concentration of residents in urban centers. The concept of address-hopping as a modern lifestyle is gaining traction in Japan. The startup ADDress is capitalizing on this trend by offering a platform for living in multiple locations. Instead of committing to a fixed address through traditional, long-term leases, members of the service pay a fixed monthly fee. In return, they gain access to a network of renovated houses spread across the Japanese archipelago – from remote mountain villages to coastal regions. This flexibility particularly appeals to a growing group of digital nomads, remote workers, and people seeking respite from the hectic pace of life in metropolises like Tokyo or Osaka.

The economic situation of the Austrian gastronomy sector remains strained despite increased sales.

While the Austrian hospitality industry recorded solid revenue increases last year, it continues to face a fragile overall economic situation. According to the current "Fitness Check Gastronomy 2026," compiled by the Austrian Hotel and Tourism Bank (OeHT) in cooperation with Kohl > Partner and Prodinger Tourism Consulting, the growth is primarily price-driven. Despite the nominal increases, guest numbers and footfall remain significantly below pre-2020 levels. Smaller establishments with fewer than 100 seats, in particular, generate a median revenue of only around €12.000 per seat per year, severely limiting their investment options. While businesses have been able to stabilize their cost of goods sold through more professional controlling and consistent cost calculation, personnel costs are becoming the main burden. In smaller restaurants, employee costs now account for an average of 42,11 percent of revenue, while in larger establishments they amount to around 39,39 percent. This structural increase is due, among other things, to the agreements reached in recent collective bargaining rounds and the general shortage of skilled workers, which is driving up non-wage labor costs and actual wages. Experts emphasize that companies are trying to offset these burdens through their product mix and pricing, rather than solely through efficiency improvements in workforce planning. While the operating profit (GOP) shows a slight improvement, it remains subdued compared to historical levels. While ski and mountain restaurants achieve a GOP of almost 20 percent due to higher volumes, smaller establishments have to calculate with around 12,5 percent. Current balance sheet data from SME research underscores the precarious situation for companies with annual revenues of less than one million euros, which frequently report negative pre-tax results. Although

Vienna: The former Hotel Anatol will now operate under the brand Four Points Flex by Sheraton.

Vienna's accommodation sector is undergoing further consolidation in the midscale segment. The long-established Hotel Anatol, near Mariahilfer Straße, has been officially repositioned as Four Points Flex by Sheraton Vienna Mariahilf following extensive renovations. This move is part of an expanded partnership between Verkehrsbüro Hospitality and the international hotel group Marriott International. With this transformation, the operator is responding to the increasing demand for branded hotel concepts that appeal to both business travelers and city tourists. Integration into Marriott's global network also connects the hotel to the Bonvoy loyalty program, significantly facilitating access to a global customer base. The rebranding includes not only a visual modernization of the rooms and public areas but also the implementation of new service standards focused on efficiency and modern comfort. Strategic Partnership and Expansion in Austria: The rebranding of the Webgasse location is part of a broader growth strategy. Martin Winkler, Chairman of the Board of Verkehrsbüro, emphasized the importance of this step for the company's role as a multi-brand operator. The Verkehrsbüro, Austria's largest tourism group, is increasingly focusing on upgrading existing properties by partnering with strong international brands. The Four Points Flex by Sheraton concept was developed by Marriott specifically for the European and Middle Eastern markets to offer reliable quality in the mid-price segment. Vienna Mariahilf is already the third hotel in Austria to operate under this brand. Previously, locations at Vienna's main train station and in close proximity to the Salzburg Exhibition Center were successfully integrated into the portfolio. This concentration demonstrates the operator's significant potential in the region.

Deficits in air defense: Swiss Air Force chief warns of security gaps and time constraints

Switzerland's security situation is facing a critical test. In a stark situation report, the commander of the Swiss Air Force, Major General Christian Oppliger, warned of serious shortcomings in the national air defense. In a widely discussed interview on April 12, 2026, Oppliger described the current situation as a race against time. Switzerland is currently virtually defenseless against modern aerial threats, particularly ballistic missiles. Existing resources are outdated and insufficient to guarantee effective airspace protection in a crisis. This assessment comes against the backdrop of massive delays in key procurement programs, cost overruns, and a growing personnel shortage within the Air Force. A central pillar of the modernization strategy, the acquisition of the US stealth fighter jet Lockheed Martin F-35A, is under considerable pressure. Originally, the acquisition of 36 aircraft was planned to replace the aging F/A-18 Hornets and the remaining F-5 Tigers. However, rising production costs in the US have exceeded the 6 billion Swiss franc budget narrowly approved by Swiss voters in 2020. To avoid another politically risky referendum on additional funding, the government is forced to reduce the number of aircraft. Oppliger confirmed that only around 30 aircraft are now being targeted. This reduction is highly problematic from a military perspective. Internal analyses by the Air Force had originally determined a requirement of 55 to 70 fighter jets to maintain a credible defense posture over the long term. With only 30 jets, Switzerland will fall far short of these requirements. Nevertheless, Oppliger considers the switch to a fifth-generation platform to be the only option.

Start of the grilling season: Almdudler promotes Alpine herb lifestyle in the restaurant industry

With rising temperatures in spring 2026, the Austrian family business Almdudler has launched its annual campaign for the grilling season. Under the slogan "Grill Fun," the traditional brand is positioning its lemonade not just as a classic refreshment, but increasingly as a versatile culinary ingredient. The company is focusing on the aromatic depth of its Alpine herb recipe to add new dimensions to marinades, sauces, and dressings. The current recipe suggestions, which utilize the lemonade's tart flavor, particularly highlight its combination with hearty meat dishes like burgers or vegetarian side dishes like tomato salads. Alongside this culinary initiative, Almdudler is deepening its collaboration with the Canadian premium grill manufacturer Napoleon. As part of a nationwide sweepstakes, 100 grills in a special limited edition will be given away, underscoring the strategic link between the beverage brand and outdoor cooking. This partnership aims to solidify the brand's presence in the high-end leisure segment. Market observers see this as a trend toward the eventification of cooking, where branded products are marketed beyond their original purpose as an essential component of a social experience. The seasonal product range includes, in addition to the classic, a growing number of sugar-free alternatives. With "Almdudler Zero" and "Almdudler Syrup Zero Sugar," the company is responding to the ongoing demand for reduced-calorie beverages without altering the characteristic flavor profile. The syrup is specifically marketed as a space-saving and flexible solution for mixed drinks, such as shandies or wine spritzers. The portfolio is complemented by a collaboration with the confectionery manufacturer Haribo, allowing the company to also offer snacks and create additional opportunities for consumption while waiting at the grill. Despite
