Berlin Brandenburg Airport is on the home straight, and nothing stands in the way of commissioning.
“All permits have been granted, all processes have been extensively tested,” it says in a broadcast. Since January, employees of the airport company and the process partners (airlines, federal police, customs, ground handling service providers and others) have been preparing for the opening of BER at the end of this month. Trial operations have been running every Tuesday and Thursday since April, and around 400 extras were added every day in July. Around 120 employees from the logistics team took care of the coordination of extras, luggage and food. A total of over 47 employees and 24.000 extras got to know BER on 9.897 days of trial operation. At times around 179.000 pieces of luggage were used. "54.000 bookings for 2.350 flights contributed to a realistic airport impression," it continues. In addition, consideration was given to the constructive criticism of the many airport testers. Trash cans were enlarged, the signage adjusted, missing clocks hung up and charging points for cell phones procured.
Terminal 1 of BER will open on October 31 with a parallel landing by Lufthansa and Easyjet. On the same evening, other planes land at T1, which then start again on November 1st. A total of around 5.000 passengers are expected at Terminal 1 on the first full day of operation of BER. In addition, there are almost 8.000 passengers at T5, the former Schönefeld Airport.
