A feast for the senses: Lower Austria invites you to a summer feast

When summer spreads its golden light over the landscape of Lower Austria, the country transforms into a kaleidoscope of scents and flavors. Between the rolling hills of vineyards, the lush alpine meadows, the rushing banks of the Danube, or the cool, shady forests, you can not only see and feel the warm season, but also taste it in a delicious way.

With the onset of summer, Lower Austria entices visitors with a wealth of events and tempting offerings designed to delight gourmets, wine lovers, and culture vultures alike. It's an invitation to immerse yourself in the rich produce, inn, and wine culture of a region that places great emphasis on hospitality and enjoyment, all embedded in a cultural landscape of incomparable diversity.

The philosophy of enjoyment: Lower Austria’s “Wide Country Kitchen” as a foundation

Lower Austria masterfully combines culinary arts, culture, and enjoyment into a harmonious whole. This self-image is emphatically emphasized by the state's leading figures. Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner is convinced: "In Lower Austria, gourmets and fans of fine wine are in exactly the right place! When attending the atmospheric events, you can not only taste Lower Austrian culinary specialties and wines, but also enjoy the proverbial hospitality – all this amidst the diverse cultural landscape!" She emphasizes that guests can also expect a corresponding cultural or sporting supporting program, which promises unforgettable vacation and excursion experiences before or after meals. This demonstrates the state's comprehensive approach to creating a holistic culinary experience that goes beyond the plate.

Michael Duscher, Managing Director of Lower Austria Tourist Board, underlines this attitude with the statement: "Experience summer events in the most beautiful locations, sample one summer culinary highlight after the next - that too is typical Lower Austria!" He refers to the "Wide Country Cuisine" in which "regional product culture, inn culture and wine culture are perfectly combined." This concept of "Wide Country Cuisine" is the core of Lower Austria's culinary identity. It stands for the deep roots of gastronomy in the regional conditions, the appreciation of local products and the cultivation of the traditional inn culture that has shaped social and culinary life in the country for centuries. It is a cuisine that thrives on the products of the fields, forests and waters, from the meat of grazing animals to the fruit of the orchards and the fine wines of the vineyards. This is not just about the mere consumption of food, but about a celebrated experience of authenticity and regionality, which can be enjoyed even more intensely with the prospect of days off in the summer.

Cultural and Culinary Symbiosis: “Culture among Winemakers”

A prime example of the successful combination of wine culture, culinary arts, and art is the event series "Culture with Winemakers." This exclusive series got off to a promising start last Friday at the venerable Herzogenburg Abbey Winery. A further 34 events are now scheduled until the beginning of September, spanning all of Lower Austria's wine-growing regions. This offers a unique opportunity to sample the diversity of Lower Austrian wines, from the robust Veltliners of the Weinviertel to the elegant Rieslings of the Wachau, in a special setting.

The events take place on the winemakers' estates, giving guests direct insight into the wine production sites and often even personal encounters with the producers. This concept creates an intimate atmosphere in which not only the wine in the glass but also the stories behind the wines and the passion of the winemakers can be experienced. The wine tastings are accompanied by exquisite dishes, often prepared with regional products and perfectly matched to the respective wines. The cultural performances, be it music, readings, or cabaret, round out the experience and make each evening an unforgettable feast for all the senses. It is the perfect symbiosis of enjoyment, education, and entertainment that brings the rich heritage of Lower Austrian wine culture to life in all its facets.

Regional taste experiences in focus: From the Wachau to the Mostviertel

The diversity of Lower Austria is also reflected in its regional culinary offerings, which are particularly vibrant in summer. In the picturesque Danube region of Lower Austria , more precisely in the world-famous Wachau Valley , the "Culinary Delights on Tour" series beckons. Here, visitors can explore the region in an extraordinary way and discover its culinary treasures. One option is the "Wachau Triple," where participants hike from one restaurant to the next, enjoying a course of an exquisite menu at each of three different establishments. This combines the joy of physical activity with the experience of the Wachau's exquisite cuisine.

Alternatively, the "Danube Ride" offers an unforgettable river experience. Aboard a Zille, a traditional wooden boat, you'll glide leisurely along the Danube, enjoying finger food and regional wines. Afterwards, you'll stop at a riverside restaurant to continue your culinary adventure. Both tours feature select "Best of Wachau" hosts known for their Wachau delicacies and the region's outstanding wines. A World Heritage Site, the Wachau is famous for its apricots and the unique wines like Grüner Veltliner and Riesling that characterize the rolling hills and steep terraces.

In the Mostviertel region, the "Mostviertel Field Experiments" offer a creative, experimental, and regional experience. Here, adventurous chefs and their guests embark on unconventional culinary journeys. The focus is on familiar favorites and new creations from the Mostviertel, a region renowned for its Most (pear wine) and robust, traditional farm specialties. This year, the experiments revolve around "dried specialties," a fascinating topic that combines traditional preservation methods with modern culinary interpretations. Events are scheduled for August 12th and September 6th in Kirchberg an der Pielach. These events offer the opportunity to discover the diverse flavors of the Mostviertel in innovative ways and to be surprised by unusual creations.

Waldviertel: When cuisine meets art and authenticity

In the Waldviertel , a region known for its dense forests, mystical moors, and the production of poppies and carp, culinary traditions and culture merge into a delicious whole. Under the motto "Brutally local and deeply rooted," the "Waldviertel Table Culture" promises an exclusive "carte blanche" menu. The title "Brutally local" emphasizes the uncompromising use of regional products sourced directly from the farmers and producers of the Waldviertel. This guarantees freshness and authenticity on the plate.

The "Carte Blanche" menu means that the chefs have the freedom to act spontaneously, depending on the season and availability of produce, and to spoil guests with regional culinary surprises. Each course is a journey of discovery through the flavors of the Waldviertel. What makes this series special is the artistic staging, which elevates the dining experience beyond the purely culinary. Artistic performances, be they musical interludes, theatrical elements, or visual installations, create a unique atmosphere that transforms the meal into a work of art. The next meal will be served on July 15th at the idyllic Allentsteig town lake, followed by a date on September 11th at the historic Haindorf Castle. These extraordinary locations further contribute to the magic of the experience and allow guests to enjoy the beauty of the Waldviertel in an exclusive setting.

Dining in nature: Exquisite tables and inspiring encounters

The opportunity to dine exquisitely in the great outdoors is one of the highlights of the Lower Austrian summer. During the "Dining in the Weinviertel" event series, guests experience unforgettable evenings at festively decorated tables set in the most beautiful spots amidst the countryside. Five-course menus and first-class wines are served, reflecting the regional diversity of the Weinviertel. The experience is further enhanced by appropriate musical accompaniment, creating an atmosphere of harmony and well-being.

From June to the end of August, a total of 25 events will take place at stunning locations in the Weinviertel region. The venues are carefully selected and offer a picturesque backdrop: be it in historic cellar lanes that bear witness to centuries of wine production, amidst ancient castle walls that tell stories, among gently swaying vines that embody the essence of the region, or in the elegant ambiance of a castle park. Each of these locations lends a special touch to the dinner and makes the meal an integral part of an unforgettable evening under the stars.

In the stunning mountain scenery of the Vienna Alps, "culinary delights meet profound insights" at the "Thought Walks." Here, dinner becomes a stage for inspiring life stories. Artists, thinkers, and successful pioneers philosophize and share their experiences and insights, while top restaurateurs serve a multi-course meal. This concept combines intellectual exchange with culinary enjoyment, offering guests a unique opportunity for reflection and inspiration. The next dates are July 4th in Wiener Neustadt and September 6th in Gloggnitz. The series runs until early November, promising inspiring evenings throughout the autumn.

Vienna Woods: Hidden treasures of the forests and regional delicacies

The cool Vienna Woods , a green lung near the capital, promise pure enjoyment. At "Vienna Woods Delights," organizers invite participants on guided forest walks that not only showcase the beauty of nature but also culminate in unique tastings. Here, participants discover unusual treasures from the canopy and bark of the mixed forest. These can include wild herbs, forest fruits, mushrooms, or even wood-based products, all creatively transformed into culinary delights.

These tastings pay homage to the original flavors of the forest and offer a new perspective on its richness. The guided walks are an opportunity to gain knowledge about the local flora and fauna and to sharpen the senses for the subtle nuances of nature. Dates for this unique series are planned for July 5 in Hinterbrühl, July 26 in Hernstein, August 2 in Mauerbach, and September 12 at Tulbingerkogel. This series of events will also run into the fall, offering the opportunity to explore the culinary secrets of the Vienna Woods even in the later months of the year. The events in Lower Austria are therefore not only a tourist attraction, but also an appreciation of their own regional products and traditions, which turn summer into a celebration of flavor and culture.
