The number of fires on Austria's main road network remains high. According to recent statistics from the Austrian motorway and expressway financing company (Asfinag), 151 vehicle fires were recorded in the first half of 2026.
This continues a trend that has seen a significant increase in recent years: While authorities recorded 226 vehicle fires in 2020, this number rose to approximately 300 incidents in both 2024 and 2025. With the statistically high number of fires in the summer months of July and August still to come, averaging 20 fires each, the infrastructure operator anticipates a further worsening of the situation in the current fiscal year.
Alongside incidents involving moving traffic, emergency services are recording an increase in fires in the immediate vicinity of roads and highways. This year, fire departments and the Asfinag road maintenance service have already had to respond to 20 embankment fires, compared to 39 such incidents in the entire previous year. Analysis of the fire causes reveals that only in seven recent cases was a fire originating from a burning car or truck. The majority of these roadside fires are instead attributed to human error, such as the improper disposal of smoldering cigarette butts or glass bottles while driving.
Traffic experts and automobile clubs emphasize that while periods of extreme heat act as a catalyst, the primary causes of vehicle fires are usually technical in nature. Among the most frequent triggers are overheated engines, seized brakes, electrical defects, and porous lines through which fuel or oil leaks onto hot engine parts. Asfinag traffic safety expert Bernhard Lautner therefore advises vehicle owners to check their vehicles' technical condition before long journeys. Technical defects such as insufficient tire pressure or a lack of coolant increase the risk of breakdowns under thermal stress and can lead to significant damage to infrastructure and lengthy road closures in real-world conditions.
However, critical observers of traffic development point out that focusing solely on the personal responsibility of drivers is insufficient. The increasing average age of the vehicle fleet, coupled with postponed maintenance intervals for economic reasons, measurably contributes to the rising accident rate. Furthermore, the growing volume of freight traffic on major transit routes leads to increased stress on the brakes and tires of heavy goods vehicles. For highway operators and emergency services, this development means a sustained increase in operational workload, as fires in tunnels or on heavily trafficked sections pose a significant risk to the overall flow of traffic.
