The European airport association ACI EUROPE has published its air traffic report for April 2024. According to the report, passenger traffic across the European airport network increased by +8,5% in April compared to the same month last year. This means that volumes are now just -0,2% below pre-pandemic levels (2019), indicating an almost complete recovery.

The non-EU+ market developed particularly positively, performing above average with an increase in passenger volumes of +13,4% compared to the previous year. Airports in Kazakhstan, Albania and Uzbekistan in particular recorded strong increases. In the EU+ market, passenger volumes increased by +7,7% year-on-year, with performance varying significantly between national markets.

The major airports recorded an increase in passenger traffic of +8,6% in April compared to the previous year. Among the mega and large airports, London-Heathrow, Istanbul and Paris-CDG were at the top. Medium airports achieved the best performance at +9,4% compared to pre-pandemic levels.

Cargo traffic increased by +12,4% across the European airport network compared to the same period last year, with airports in the EU+ and the rest of Europe recording similar increases. Overall, freight traffic was +2,5% above pre-pandemic levels. Flight movements increased by +7,4% across the entire European airport network in April. This data highlights a positive development in the aviation sector, indicating a growing recovery from the impact of the pandemic.
