Airbus and Quebec are pumping $1,2 billion into A220 program

The regional government of Quebec and Airbus are jointly investing US$1,2 billion in Airbus Canada. This company is responsible for the production of the A220 series. In addition to Mobile (USA), final assembly is mainly carried out in Mirabel.

The investment should mean that the program can be further expanded, but at the same time jobs should also be stabilized. Despite well-filled order books, Airbus Canada felt the effects of the corona pandemic. Since a not inconsiderable part of the funds is also to flow into development, it remains to be seen whether the A220-500 will be launched after all.

“The global aerospace industry has been showing signs of recovery for several months. Single aisle aircraft, including the A220 designed and assembled at Mirabel, are the first to recover from the effects of the pandemic. Furthermore, our recent announcements of A220 orders and delivery figures for 2021 bear witness to this. The A220 has a strong order book with almost 500 aircraft to be delivered over the next few years," said Airbus CEO Guillaume Faury.

Quebec has a financial stake in Airbus Canada. It was originally intended to be withdrawn around 2026. This step has been postponed to 2030. The workforce in Mirabel is to be increased in order to be able to increase the production rate. It is expected that numerous new orders for the A220 series can be landed in the coming months and years.
