Airlines for America rejects EU pollution monitoring for non-European flights

The lobby group Airlines for America (A4A) has spoken out against the planned expansion of the EU pollution monitoring program to flights to and from destinations outside Europe.

A4A argues that the science is uncertain and that implementing the new requirements could lead to a rise in ticket prices. According to reports from The Guardian, A4A tried to persuade the European Commission to limit this requirement to European flights. The planned system will require European flights to report their figures for non-CO2025 emissions such as nitrogen oxides and sulphur dioxide from January 2.

From 2027, this will also apply to flights outside of Europe. Critics, such as the non-profit organization InfluenceMap, point out that non-CO2 emissions account for a significant part of the climate impact of flying. IATA partially supports A4A's concerns and calls for a voluntary introduction of the system due to the uncertainties regarding the scientific basis.
