Anniversary campaign in the Austrian cable car sector: advertising tour in public spaces

Advertising

The Austrian Cable Car Association will celebrate the centenary of the domestic cable car industry in 2026 with a large-scale advertising campaign. A golden cable car gondola will travel throughout Austria as part of this campaign, acting as an ambassador for the industry.

The tour started in spring at Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna and has since made stops at various locations, including the two historic cable car systems on the Rax and Zugspitze mountains, which are celebrating their centenary this year. Most recently, the gondola was used as a backdrop for public events during the Tour of Austria cycling race in St. Johann im Pongau.

The campaign, conceived by the industry association, aims to demonstrate the relevance of the cable car industry outside of traditional Alpine regions, within the everyday lives of the population. By placing the cable car cabin in urban areas and at major events, citizens are to be directly addressed and encouraged to participate in an accompanying prize draw. This draw will raffle off a so-called "century ticket," the exact terms and conditions of which, however, have not yet been published in detail by the association. Further anniversaries are coming up in the next few years, including the Pfänderbahn and Feuerkogelbahn cable cars in 2027, and the Gerlitzen-Kanzelbahn cable car the following year.

Industry analysts view the elaborate advertising campaign against the backdrop of current economic challenges facing Austrian mountain railways. Operators are under considerable pressure to offset rising operating costs due to high energy prices and the necessary investments in snowmaking systems and modernization. At the same time, the noticeable increase in lift ticket prices is fueling ongoing discussions about the social sustainability of alpine tourism for the local population. Critics point out that high-profile PR campaigns like the gondola tour, while highlighting the industry's historical significance, offer no solutions to the structural problems and the volatile demand during winters with little snow.

The cable car industry has traditionally been a key pillar of Austria's tourism and leisure sector. Whether purely symbolic actions in urban areas are sufficient to secure long-term interest in expensive mountain sports activities among broad segments of the population remains a matter of debate among experts. Nevertheless, the industry association intends to continue the tour in order to further address technological developments and the economic role of these companies in rural areas.
