A recent survey by Bank 99 shows that cash remains the preferred payment method in Austria. Three-quarters of respondents use cash, especially for smaller amounts, tradesmen's services, and restaurant visits. At the same time, debit cards are gaining in importance, especially for purchases at supermarkets, gas stations, and clothing stores. While older people rely more frequently on credit cards, younger respondents prefer digital payment methods such as smartphone or online payments.
The survey, conducted among 400 people, highlights gender differences: Women pay more often with cash, while men increasingly use digital payment methods or credit cards. Debit cards, on the other hand, are equally popular among both genders. A quarter of those under 30 already pay with mobile when shopping for clothes, while fewer than 30 percent of those over XNUMX choose this option.
A shift is also evident in online banking: 55 percent of respondents prefer to conduct their banking transactions via a banking app, while traditional online services on a computer are declining at 29 percent. Younger people are more inclined towards mobile solutions, while older people continue to prefer computers or bank counters. Despite digitalization, personal advice remains important for many customers.
Bank 99 AG, a subsidiary of Österreichische Post AG and Schelhammer Capital Bank AG, serves approximately 350 customers in Austria with approximately 300.000 employees. In addition to digital offerings, the bank continues to offer services in branches and at approximately 1.700 postal partners.
